Do you think we'll ever see the Masters of Doom pilot?
SLPerrin replied to SLPerrin's topic in Doom General
It was to be released under the Franco brother's production company, If I recall. It was definitely filmed and some people have seen it and said that it was great. I doubted its existence, but it was filmed... The pilot was never picked up and so, the rest of the show was never filmed. -

I got in contact with the fellas who made the Doom piano for research for my book. They sent me a ton of info on how they made it and how it works. Loads of pictures of it being built, etc. -
First, I just want to say a huge thank you to all who've contributed words. That particular chapter is shaping up nicely. I did send out a copy so you could read and see how your words will look like on the page. Everybody who has contributed will be getting a PDF of the book late November, ahead of the book becoming available to buy. Thank you once more, it's been great to read your memories. I have a couple more people sending me very late contributions that I'll be editing into the book as soon as I get them. The book itself has had several updates and now looks like this... I have more. I had the pleasure of meeting Bill Thorpe recently. If you don't know, Bill made one of the best (if not the best) Doom fan films ever. Check out his YouTube channel for more Doom and non-Doom videos (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYuiBRhcifFrEYPGhQmJ5Hg). A massive Doom fan and Bill has also been kind enough to contribute to the book too. Top fella his is. Lastly, I had the even greater pleasure of meeting the Icon of Sin himself. John Romero even signed an early pre-release version of my book... A unique one-off as there is only one copy of this pre-release version and there will never be another. I had a chat with this legend too. The truth is that John has been aware of my book since early 2020 when I first contacted him about it. I've just kept that bit of info close to my chest. Oh yeah, everyone who has contributed to my book, John Romero will be reading your words. After several emails, it was great to finally meet in person though. I have a few more pics of me and John that I may include in finished the book. I still have a good chunk of work to do and need to refine both the cover and some of the content. But, this will definitely be ready for the 10th of December. Doom's 30th anniversary. Thanks once more for all of your contributions so far and for reading. I hope that you're looking forwards to the book.

Still a good chuck of work to do yet. It's not been edited and is full of spelling/grammar/formatting mistakes. The cover is nothing like the published version will be. I'm currently going through people's contributions and editing them for that particular chapter and more... But it exists and it will be published on the 10th of December.

Hello folks. As some of you may know, I've written a Doom book to be released this year on the 10th of December. I did make a post a while back announcing this and asking for contributions, which got some very 'interesting' replies. I've been busy editing, updating and so on. The book is now over 100,000 words and still growing. This post is to ask for anyone who is interested in contributing to just contact me via messages right here on Doomworld as of now. Just so I can keep a record of anyone who does wish to contribute and I can give you all my email address so that I can then contact you personally. Now, I do have quite a few people already interested in wanting to be part of this book (outside of Doomworld too), so I am going to have to limit numbers. As I want to get a good mix of various Doom fans, I'll ask everyone who contacts me a few basic questions, just to see what kind of a Doom fan they are. I want old school fans, news fans, fans that know the game inside out, fans that are more casual and so on. Right here, I am just going to make everything nice and clear. I can not afford to pay people, for their words, that is why it is called a contribution. However, anyone who does get selected to be in the book and has their words in print, you will be shown a copy of this particular chapter so that you can see how your words will look and sign off on everything. I will not be publishing anybody's words if they are not happy. Editing and formatting will have to be done, so this does mean that some of your words may not make the cut, I may even have to add a few words to make a sentence/paragraph fit the page. Again, this is why I will send everyone a copy of the chapter so that they can sign off if they are happy with the editing. When you are happy with that chapter and when I am happy with the book as a whole, I will send everyone who contributed a PDF of the entire book ahead of publication on the 10th of December. A free copy of the book to say thanks for your contributions. You will get full credit for your words both in the chapter and in a personal thanks at the end of the book. If you make Doom content, maps, videos, etc. I will be more than happy to mention as much in the book. I think I originally said a max word count of 600 words. I'm extending that too around 1,000. Firstly, to allow for editing. Secondly, to give people more space in the book to work with. If anyone goes the extra mile and sends me a good chunk of 1,000+ words and it is great content, I'll seriously consider it too. I'm trying to not to sound greedy but also not alienate anyone that does want to contribute. All while trying to keep the chapter at a reasonable size. It's a bit of a juggling act. The sort of content I am looking for is what Doom means to you personally. Memories of playing the game, did you start with the 1993 PC original or one of the ports. What impact had Doom had on your life and so on. A chance for Doom fans to express their passion and personal memories for the game. So then, if anyone is interested and if you've not yet messaged me, please do feel free to do so now. I'll get in contact will all of you as and when I can over the next couple of weeks. If selected to be in the book, I'll be asking folks to send me their words from June through to the end of July. I'll then be spending August and September reading and editing your words. Sending you the chapter so that you can see how it looks and sign off if you're happy. I'll use October to edit everything into the book, do a couple of more drafts and by mid November, I'll be sending out PDFs of the entire book to everyone who has contributed. For the book to be published and available on Amazon as a paperback and hardback on the 10th of December (I already have the ISBN numbers). One last thing, after my last post and my being accused of being a scam artist and so on, I'm not replying to anything left here. If you don't want to be part of the book, just move one with your life and pay this post no mind. For those who are interested, many thanks, drop me a message here on Doomworld and I'll get back to you soon.

I think I'm done answering people's suggestions that I am, in some way, 'scamming' and 'exploiting' people, etc. This is all I will say for now. If you have no interest in contributing, then don't. Just crack on with your life and pay this book no mind. Zero need for you to make any posts at all. Trying to make out that I am taking advantage of people though, that is pretty low of you. If others wish to contribute to the book, what business is that of yours? The funny thing is that I have written a chapter praising the Doom community and how they have kept the game alive for three decades, how nice and friendly they are. Maybe I should add a couple, of paragraphs on how some of them are dicks? If anyone is interested in contributing and receiving full credit for your words, a personal thanks in the book and a free PDF ahead of publication. Great and I massively appreciate your interest. For you lovely folk, I will make another post in a couple of months with an update, more details and ask you to message me so that I can keep track of everyone and give you my email to keep in contact. Many thanks.

Well, I kind of don't want to use the forum as a lame marketing endeavour as this isn't about advertising my other books, it's about this Doom book that I have written. But, as you have asked. https://www.amazon.co.uk/MICROBRITS-Tapestry-British-Gaming-Industry-ebook/dp/B07ST3MT68 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Most-Important-Video-Games-Ever/dp/B092PB95BW

Months, years. I began this book in February 2019. But to answer this query. Is Masters of Doom free? I got 2 copies and had to pay both times. To further add, how do I cover the cost of printing the physical editions (paperback and hardback) if I don't charge? How do I pay for the cut that Amazon take for selling and distributing the book and so on? I'm not a charity and I don't have unlimited money to fund this book. So do tell me, how do I pay all the overheads of self-publication with no money? If you'd like to stump up the costs, I'll be more than happy to give the book away for free. I'm not 'making' anyone pay for anything. Just as everything in life, people have a free choice. Nobody has to buy my book if they do not want to. Freedom of choice. However, if anyone does want to contribute to this one chapter. I'm giving them a free PDF of the book. So, how am I 'making' people pay? Feel free to check out other gaming books that I have written on Amazon if you wish. https://www.amazon.co.uk/MICROBRITS-Tapestry-British-Gaming-Industry-ebook/dp/B07ST3MT68 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Most-Important-Video-Games-Ever/dp/B092PB95BW Oh, and on the subject of money and my books. Here is how much royalties I make per book after print costs, distribution and Amazon have had their cut and other costs too. This is based on a hardback that costs £16/$20 to buy... As you can see, I'm hardly living the life of luxury here. Unless this book sells several million copies worldwide, I won't exactly be topping J K Rowling's net worth, will I?
-
Doesn't make them necessarily wrong either. As I have been 100% transparent and upfront with people from the start... where is the 'wrong' in this?
-
Exactly this. If I was asking people to do research for me, write up in-depth guides and so on. I could understand. But for people to just jot down a few words of why they like Doom and what the game means to them and me offering them a free PDF and even willing to plug any of their Doom related work (YouTube channels, etc). Even more so, it is a completely freedom of choice thing. I have said right in the first post that there will be no payment. So, if people are still happy for their words to be in my book knowing there is no payment... what's the problem? Honestly, I could go through this forum (and others) and find people's words and use them in my book (as long as I credit a source) for free if I want. But no, I'm offering folk to have their words in my book with their permission and to be part of a Doom project that I have done as a fan myself.
-
How is it 'exploitative'? Again, I have said from the very start that no payment will be given. If people are still happy to offer some words knowing that no payment is on the table, where is the exploitation?
-
Some common sense. Thank you.
-
I have been 100% clear and upfront from the start. Why should I not sell if the contributors are happy for their words to be in the book?
