Recreate Plutonia from Memory! (CP) (Completed)

Oh wow you're here too? I hope my creative butchering of your work tickles your nostalgia bone the same way yours tickled mine! -

The other day I went and gave Blood Rush a couple of listens. If I've got time, I might have a shot at doing it as I don't think it's been claimed yet? (Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.) I'd have one free listen left in that case, but with the deadline looming I can't really promise anything. -

Here it is: map 32's music, Plunge On, Saw Further This MIDI was my absolute dream project as far as anything in the DOOM community was concerned, and I'm so happy I was allowed to make this. I might however make some revisions to the audio balance before the deadline as I keep listening back to it, really hating one or two bits of it but then being fine on the next pass. Another Edit: Yeah, here's the final version. The stereo square wave was dominating the mix throughout so I've lowered it. Other than that, I keep spotting other mistakes, but I've now gone back to listening to the song normally (waited long enough) so I'm no longer allowed to correct those. PlungeOnSawFurther.zip -

And it's almost done! Got a few finishing touches to add (namely, things that I find to be a pain in the bum to do no matter what software I'm using, like adding multiple notes on the same beat which I'm still pretty bad at for some reason) but here's a near-final draft. I gotta explain a few things first: the first time I heard this song, I deadass mistook it for another one entirely, and was like "wait, why is this guy's playthrough of Plutonia using a MIDI of... oh, it's not that at all. Real similar though." Nevertheless, back when I didn't really have this tune memorized, that other tune would fill in the blanks whenever I hummed it to myself. What this means is that, with this version looping three times, the middle loop is from memory (my intent is the a player will only hear it once every third loop,) just a specific imperfect memory I used to have of the song (now replicated from an imperfect memory of that) based on that issue. In light of this, I did also ask Bucket directly a few years ago whether [that song] was a direct inspiration for Plunge Saw. He said it wasn't deliberate, but once he realized what it was turning into, he leaned into that on purpose. So here it is, a near-final draft of what I'm calling "Plunge On, Saw Further" (or its lesser-used Japanese title, 更に台杉者達, "Sara ni Daisugi Monotachi." Like maybe two people on this entire forum'll get that joke.) Shouldn't be long before I get a final version out. I might end up having a crack at one or two of the other songs if I find I can in fact recall any others well enough, but this particular one's lived rent free in my brain for a very long time and I wouldn't have it any other way. Well one way or another I've got it working again, so barring any other issues I'll be on target for deadline. Work's progressing steadily now, so I've used up one of my three permitted listens for a bit of inspiration. -

Actually, after it's decided to break another one of the songs I've been working on... fuck Anvil Studio. Anybody able to recommend another free MIDI sequencer? -

Having some minor technical issues with my MIDI software, but I've made a fair bit of progress. Once I've sorted that out I hope to have a first draft up here soon. Not being able to actually listen to the tune for fun is driving me bonkers :P -

I'm wondering how the soundtrack is gonna turn out. My contribution for TNT was intended to be a relatively 1:1 replication as best as my memory allowed, and with Plunge Saw I'm mostly planning on keeping it as authentic as I can recall. There's a slight chance I might follow the lead of some of the more "extended" versions of the DOOM II OST submissions though, because that version of Countdown To Death was beautiful (and I get the distinct impression the memory version of map 32 is gonna be punishing so you'll likely want something longer than a hundred seconds in the background.) You'll get Plunge Saw, I promise you that much, but I'm not saying you won't get more than that this time ;) -

I'll take Plunge Saw, map32's music please! -
I'm also enthusiastic to see this finished as well. I've enjoyed decino's runs through these (as well as Pistoolkip, seeing as he's an actual mapper) and I'm also wondering if the memory version of TNT will just generally be more enjoyable than the real one. I do have a more selfish reason too: I've also got mad dreams of doing some specific music for a Plutonia version of the project, assuming that comes next. If it uses the fan patch that puts new music in, I really, really, really, really, really, really, REALLY want to do Plunge Saw. If it's using the OST, there's a good selection of classic tracks of which I'd be interesting doing at least one (especially Sign of Evil, among others.)

Anyway, here it is: Doomguy's Legs are Being Digested. I took Engired liking both my posts as tentative permission to drop this and to be fair I had fun putting it together. It's the only song in TNT that plays in more than two maps so I figured it wouldn't upset anybody. Tested in GZDoom and Crispy Doom. Seems to play properly in GZDoom, whereas in Crispy Doom it omits a lot of percussion and does weird stuff to the mix, which is beautifully appropriate because when I played TNT on Collector's Edition and it was packed in with DOOM95, that behaved much the same way so I'm strangely okay with that. Currently working on Doomguy's Legs are Being Digested, aka that unsolicited additional copy of Into the Beast's Belly. It's less than a minute long so it should only take me the rest of the day, although the percussion usually takes me the longest with these things as I'm not the best at composing for it. I'm seeing now why so much deviance occurs with these projects: once you work on your own version of something, it starts replacing the original in your mind, and you scramble to fill in the blanks with what you think will make it sound or appear correct. The mistakes begin accumulate and soon they're out of control until they create something new. It feels awesome :P

Looks like I joined the forums just in time - I've been hoping to join the Plutonia project as a composer if you end up doing that one too. This is looking really cool and I hope you all have memories of TNT being more exciting than it actually was! :P Edit: come to think of it, you know when in DOOM 2 you had alternate copies of MIDIs that were used more than once in the game? You're not... doing that this time as well are you? If you are, I wouldn't mind taking a crack at doing an additional version of Into The Beast's Belly since it's used in the game like what, four times? I also realize it's past the deadline so if you give me a hard "no" I won't take offence, and if you give me a conditional "yes" if I can get it done in like, a day or something, I'll give it my best shot.
