  1. Personally i feel the low-res "crunchyness" of Dooms textures is part of the appeal and the game loses a bit of its "artistic coherency" (For the lack of a better word) when the textures are too "hi res". A bit like 3D remakes of 2D games. I think that's why there was never that big of a push for a HD texture rework. That being said, seeing how AI is becoming more of a viable tool, i just wondered if it would be possible to use it to add/extrapolate additonal "directions" for the sprites. Basically turning the 8-Directional sprites into 16,32,etc-Directional sprites. I would love to see what an "almost" 360 degree sprite would look like and how a game with that "art style" would feel to play.
  2. This looks pretty damn impressive. And also has a very nice vibe, i like it.
  3. Haha, now that is a callback review phrase. Couldn't have summed it up better.
  4. :J That. Also you have to keep in mind i grew up in germany and it was 30 years ago...dear lord. Details are fuzzy but i'm pretty sure i didn't get my hands on Doom 2 on release (Possibly not even in 1994 at all), and when me and my friends did....acquire... it (Don't worry, i bought enough Doom 2s over the years ;) ) there was a plethora of maps and mods avaible. We had the CDs right there. With, just for a big example, The Aliens Total Conversion: https://www.moddb.com/mods/aliens-tc Alsoalso, since i feel you people seem to think i hate this game, i love Doom 2. It's one of my favorite games and i spent a shitton of time with it over the years. If i want to play Doom now, i play Doom 2. So no hate here, somehow i allways happen to check this forum when someone posts a thread like this lol. :p It's just when i first saw and played it back then i pretty much felt exactly like the notes of the Joystick review Gez mentioned: "Score: Technical 95%, Interest 20% (Doom owners)" If that doesn't illustrate my point enough this is how the id timeline went for me. Personally. : Wolf 3D -> Doom -> Doom 2 -> Quake There is only Doom 2 in there that didn't come with a new engine. It's the only one that didn't do anything spectacular and fresh. And that is why i was underwhelmed back...sometime in the mid 90s when i first played it. If that makes me a hater in a bubble: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  5. It wasn't mainly about the maps for me. I mean i wasn't overly impressed, especially with the "real place" like maps (As i wrote before, you could get better looking and flowing maps allready on coverdisks and the like). My main issue though was the fact that Doom 2 looks and plays exactly like Doom 1 during a time where FPS games made huge technical leaps and the entire gaming genre was going forward fast. And then you get the follow up to THE game that personified that technical progress like no other....and it's basically just an expansion pack. THAT is why it felt lazy to me - When i was 14. In 1994.
  6. Tbh this is the first time i even hear about a new doom game coming out. ^_^ They kinda lost me with the new games, it all felt a bit too self aware. So if this one doesn't do that winking ego-trip nonsense i might check it out. Edit: Oh and yeah, an in-game store would be a hard nope.
  7. To me Doom 2 felt lazy. Really lazy. This is the big Hell on Earth thing? The sequel to Doom? It's the same damn thing, with some more stuff and worse map designs. At a time where maps and mods allready showed what you can do with the engine. Now keep in mind i was 14 when Doom 2 came out - These days i realize due to the Shareware model of Doom 1 they just wanted some payout with Doom 2. Doesn't make it less lazy, but i probably would've done the same. ;)
  8. Only absolute psychopaths play Doom with a Joystick. Also this was during the period when John Romero was slightly annoying (Rockstar dev, making me his B*tch and all that) so we most likely took his praise of this thing with a grain (Read: Bag) of salt.
  9. It was for Doom 1 first, but i remember my friends and me playing the Alien Total Conversion mod in 94/95 and being utterly impressed. It's like, a whole new game, dude! https://doom.fandom.com/wiki/Aliens_TC
  10. https://sinnesloeschen-games.itch.io/the-court-witch The Kingdom is in uproar! A crime wave has swept the Lands! Can you stop it and find out who is behind it all? 11. This is giving me very strong C64 vibes, i really dig the entire style. Very cool. Unfortunately it's a turn based RPG, but hey, that's a "me" problem. =D
  12. I think that looks really good. It's the "right amount" for me. Of course it's just my opinion but i think too much detail can make a map feel too busy, especially when it comes to props.
  13. The slopes look cool. But i would say even less symmetry and some of the stuff Shepardus linked to, just with rock instead of water (I.e. adding little bumps in the floor and ceiling, inwards, outwards, it doesn't matter. Bumps!). And of course the spike sprite. ;)
