How much do aesthetics matter to you in Doom? [Poll]
Omay replied to Kwisior's topic in Doom General
I prefer maps with better graphics, although gameplay is more important. Even though Freedoom E1M1's gameplay in the current release version is very similar to the current development version, the development version has much better aesthetics in my opinion. Because of this, I enjoy the development version more than the release. Something with good gameplay and bad graphics is better than something with bad gameplay and good graphics. -
I am trying to make my own launcher for GZDoom, but the normal GZDoom binary from zdoom.org has a launcher built in, so if I run GZDoom from a terminal command, it always has the GZDoom launcher, even if the WAD is specified. Please help.

I'll have it reviewed in a bit. Currently on a road trip, so connection is slower.

All fonts from comments have now been added.

I'll add it to the list after I finish listening to some songs on it.

Honestly, it is probably very hard to find the "best" SC-55. I only chose the one in my post because it seemed to be the most original looking version I have been able to find.

I have recently been interested in the best soundfont for doom. I install fluidsynth, as it is what GZDoom uses, and got 12 soundfonts. They are as follows: Arachno, MuseScore, Aegean Symphonic Orchestra, Salamander C5, General User GS, FluidR3 GM, SC-55, Balanced GM, and finally, the classic GZDoom soundfont. Aegean Symphonic Orchestra: This soundfont is good in terms of audio quality, but it feels nothing like doom, and it is hard to hear some sounds that are not the main melody, even if they add loads to the song. Download here Arachno: This soundfont is extremely good in all ways. It sounds great, it feels like doom should, and smaller details are easy to hear. Download here BalancedGM: The soundfont is good sounding, but doesn't feel right. I'm not sure what is wrong, but it's just off in my opinion. The details are also a pretty weak point in the font. Download here FluidR3 GM: The soundfont is pretty good, and decent in all categories, but doesn't quite beat some others. Download here General User GS: The soundfont is the one of the best for doom, but only if what you're looking for is a more analog sound, rather than retro, grittier sound. I prefer Arachno, just because it feels similar to the original doom. Download here Classic GZDoom: The soundfont is really not too good. It doesn't sound too good in terms of audio quality, but it does fit the game well. The details are also pretty weak in this font. MuseScore: This soundfont is good, but not for doom. The sound feels a tiny bit like doom, but not really. The capture of background details is practically non-existent, similar to the classic GZDoom one. Download here Salamander C5: This soundfont is definitely extremely good, but it fits into doom even less than General User GS. Still a very good choice for doom, although it isn't for me. Download here ChoriumRevA: This soundfont is a great acoustic one, and even though it strays far from the original doom sounds, it works very well. Thanks to Kappes Buur for this recommendation. Download here OPL 3 FM 128M: This is a very good soundfont, and sounds very much like some classic systems, or at least how I would assume them to sound. Thanks to Lila Feuer for this recommendation. Download here RLNDGM: Sounds similar to the SC-55 soundfonts, although it is slightly different. Really depends on preference for the user. Thanks to Gregor for this recommendation. Download here SGM: A good, high quality soundfont. It is really what I picture when I think of Doom music. Thanks to Ozcar for this recommendation. Download here SC-55: This section is for recreations of the original Doom 1993 soundfont. Some fonts were from this archive on moddb, and on archive.org. The titles will be what they are named with in the file, or at least something recognizable. All of them seem to have powerful details. Thanks to Touchfuzzy_YT for recommending more soundfonts. GM DLS Remastered: A pretty basic font. Has a bit more fading than the other SC-55's, although otherwise, it is pretty similar. GM Roland: A bit quieter than other fonts, but is again mainly just a generic SC-55 font. GM2 Map Soundfont: I'm really not sure what's happening here. It is extremely chaotic. It is likely not designed for music. SC-55 24 bit XGD edition: Similar to other SC-55 fonts, but balancing is changed to be a bit more like Arachno. SC-55 DJ Tony: Again, similar to others, but it seems to have different percussion. SC-55 EmpororGrieferous: Again a pretty average soundfont, but it might be a bit better than the average one. SC-55 JMSexton: The lead in the song I am listening to doesn't fit in to the song, and more parts of it have way too much bass. It might be good for a couple songs, but at least a lot are not good. SC-55 Masquerade: Some more sounds are a bit more acoustic than others. The details, at least in the song I am using are stellar. SC-55 NSS MKII: A pretty soft soundfont. Doesn't seem to have many hard sounds. One of the best SC-55 fonts in my opinion. SC-55 SOUNDCanvas Up: This font is ok, but feels odd for the lead in my opinion. SC-55 Soundfont: Has a completely different, yet similar feel. I like it more, but that is likely a purely personal choice, and not objective. It has a fair amount more bass, but not unreasonable. Trevor James: This soundfont is very loud and unbalanced. The synth is much loader than drums, and the bass is way too high. ZZ Denis: A quiet, and average SC-55 font. The bass does sound decently different though. Roland SC-55: The quality is decent, but the balancing between different audios really makes this font not too good. StrikingUAC: It's not bad, but not good either. The lead, at least in the song I am testing with, felt weird. Felt similar to SC-55 Up. SC-55 full pack: Definitely better than the others. It works well, and doesn't have much of the effect that I find weird. Patch93: This is a good soundfont, and it sounds a lot like the original. My favorite out of the SC-55 fonts. SC-55: This one is just named SC-55 in the archive, and sounds similar to the StrikingUAC version. Here are the non-SC-55 fonts from the archive: SC-88: It is pretty good, although I feel like a lot of people might not like it. SCC-1 Florestan: A lot like the average SC-55 font. Not too good, not too bad. SCC-1: Very similar to the SC-55 fonts, and if it were one, it would probably be on par with Patch93's. Windows: This soundfont is basically another SC-55 font. Windows Redux: Similar to the Windows soundfont, but I like this one better. I will try to add all soundfonts that are commented in, although it may take me some time to do so.
