I'll probably make a map for this at some point this year. One question though, is it okay to use some textures from Equinox?

What do you listen to while mapping? Does it influence your work?
Plerb replied to Kwisior's topic in Doom General
MIDIs and tracker music. It doesn't usually influence the mapping itself. -
The method I came up with is to have alternating sectors about 16 units thick, each pointing opposite directions. The sectors pointing one direction are raised and the other direction is lowered. When the lowered ones are raised and vice versa, in effect it switches direction. This works fine but I'm wondering if there's a more simple solution to do this, as it's rather tedious to set up. If not, I'm fine with just using this method.

I'd use the chainsaw more if the weapon bobbing wasn't so distractingly choppy. :P This thread has reminded me that I should probably place the chainsaw in more of my maps, I forget it even exists sometimes.

What were your very first mapping attempts like?
Plerb replied to Li'l devil's topic in WAD Discussion
My first attempt at mapping in 2016 was for Chex Quest. I was trying to recreate a map I dreamt of when I was 7. I didn't get very far with it and it's probably gone for good by now. I still remember the dream: You started in a rectanglular, gray room with a door and 4 windows connecting to the next room, which was a bigger gray square with some flemoids and ammo scattered all over the place. Boring, I know. :P Over the next several years I tried Doom mapping occasionally but it didn't really click for me until around April or May 2023, which is when I made the first map I ever placed an exit in (I never fully finished it): a shitty Chex Quest 3 map. I've improved very rapidly over the past 8 months and the difference between that map and maps I made in the past week are huge. -
Do you know any obscure 2000s PC games?
Plerb replied to Wadmodder Shalton's topic in Everything Else
I grew up on an eGames disk with around 300 games from the mid 90s to early 2000s, so I know a quite a few obscure 2000s games from it. However two specific ones have always been the most interesting to me: BuzzingCars (aka Wild Wheels for the eGames version): A crazy racing game from 2002 by Epsitec, the same people behind Speedy Eggbert/Blupi (which I've seen multiple people mention earlier in this thread). This one is even more obscure than that. You carry out various missions with your large remote controlled car, such as blasting water at robots that are annoying their neighbors with their music, or preventing robots from being tortured and killed by the bean-shaped green alien badguys. It's a very cool game. Warkanoid (aka Jetball for the eGames version): An Arkanoid clone from 2000 by Kraisoft, and the coolest one ever made. It has a super cool techno theme with cool graphics, cool levels, it's just really cool. But the best thing about this game is it has the best game soundtrack ever made, period. Nothing tops it. Nothing. It has 2 sequels, Warkanoid II with a nature theme and Warkanoid III with a storybook theme. They also have great soundtracks, especially the former. -
I added 6 new MIDIs to the pack! I'm especially proud of Starsounds, Fastwave, and Refraction.

This looks fake to me, but what do I know. Is there any evidence to suggest it's real?

Here are some songs I've composed at various points in time. All of these were initially composed in OpenMPT, in IT format, using the default Windows MIDI soundfont's instruments. @Melodic Spaceship helped convert some of them to MIDI. This package will be updated whenever more of my MIDIs are ready to release. You can use these for your projects (even non-Doom projects), as well as remixing or editing them, as long as you give credit. [Not gonna bother listing all the songs in this post anymore, that'll get too unwieldy, just look at info.txt] PlerbMidi v3.zip

What would Doom 2 be like if Tom Hall stayed and made maps?
Plerb replied to Grungo's topic in Doom General
That's a Doom 1 project though. :P -
What do you think life be like if WOLF3d was made but not Doom?
Plerb replied to Grungo's topic in Doom General
I would hate to be in a universe where Doom never existed, but on the other hand, if it meant more Commander Keen, that might make up for it. Maybe. -
HOLY SHIT I WAS NOT EXPECTING TO SEE SOMEONE MENTION KRAISOFT! Even among Kraisoft games, which are already fairly obscure, I feel like the Warkanoid (aka Jetball) series is the most overlooked. I played them as a kid, they were on an eGames compilation CD. I've listened to the shit out of the soundtrack my whole life, and it's my favorite video game soundtrack ever. It's also one of the biggest influences on my own MIDIs. Expect a lot of these songs to pop up in my WADs.

Keen's parents are named Arthur Blaze and Susan Blaze. He also has an older brother and younger sister that are alluded to, but they are never seen and don't have names. Edit: I see this was already mentioned in the reddit post you linked. I wonder where Catacombguy fits into all this.

-Short punchy maps -Atmospheric maps -Lighting with harsh contrast -Windows, and being able to see areas before you can access them -Environmental storytelling -Pre-rendered 3D stuff in 90s WADs -Altered palettes that are more colorful than Doom's stock palette -Implied room-over-room -Flood lights -Billboards -A lack of damaging floors -Starry nighttime skies

Lately I've been thinking about the possibility of tracking down the origins of this song and a few others in BPRD wads (namely Nuts 2's track, which was actually another unknown song ripped from the internet). The fact that they were all converted to MUS and any metadata they once had was removed makes this much more difficult. Yesterday I began an attempt to find the exact MIDI cover of Popcorn from Run.wad, in case any of the other MIDIs appearing in his WADs came from the same place (though probably not Equinox MAP13's music). So far, I've only found two different covers and neither of them were it. Edit: Clearly I wasn't looking in the right places because I just found like 20 more. Still haven't found the exact one but I've found pretty similar ones. Edit 2: No way, I actually found it. It's the popcorn midi on this site: http://area512.htmlplanet.com/music/wonka.html The version in Run.wad swapped out some instruments and expanded on the drum beat but it's clearly derived from this exact MIDI. Unfortunately I don't think any other BPRD songs are on this site. But hey, now we know where BPRD got the music for a random joke wad he made that isn't even on Doom Wiki (that also has the funniest story in a wad ever)!

@Faceman2000 Thanks for the feedback! I'll fix the softlock and make the opening room more hellish. I wasn't intending to make it look that much like E3M3 other than the light hallway, but then again I played that map more than any other for inspiration :P. I might change the skulls in the cage to an SP_ texture. I think the map's overall texturing is fine as-is. Some thoughts about the remaining map slots: Considering E1 and E2 still don't have boss maps assigned and the alpha E1M8 and MAP10 seem like the best choices for that, I'm wondering @HEXWALKER if you plan on making either of your maps boss maps. I doubt enough could be done with the alpha E2M4 to justify having it in the roster. Every other alpha map has at least a couple features that were changed or removed in the final, but (bear in mind I'm just going off of memory) this one only has a lack of enemies, slightly different texturing, and doesn't have the starting and ending rooms. Even the keys and keydoors are in their final positions. It'd be basically indistinguishable from a map that was just directly based off of the final E2M4. COMM5 should only be used with another slot instead of being used on it's own. The early Doom 2 MAP01 could be added to the roster, specifically as E2M9. Outside of maybe a couple Doom 2 textures, it easily could've been a Doom 1 map. Even if there's a Doom 2 follow-up to this project, it could still work if it's different enough. I still need to get around to making the revised version of my un41 cover.

-Finish and release at least one of my (many) solo projects -Contribute to more community projects -Start putting more thought and attention into enemy placement for my maps -Beat most of the WADs I started playing in 2023 -Get better at speedrunning Doom Other stuff I want to do that's tangentially related to Doom: -Get better at 3D modelling and animation - with my ancient version of 3DS Max ;) (I'm making a total conversion that heavily leans into the 90s CGI look, and I'm making almost all the graphics myself) -Finish and release at least one of my Commander Keen mods. I've barely touched most of them for the past four years. I also want to get back into playing Keen stuff in general. -Obtain a Pentium 1, 2 or 3 PC, and after that maybe a 386 or 486 -Play and beat more old FPS games

@Melodic Spaceship (and me a bit) have been working on a vanilla demake of Chex Quest 3 for some time. It's still under development but 13 out of 15 maps have been fully converted, so it shouldn't be too much longer before it gets released. https://chexquest.org/index.php?topic=5977.0

Everything by BPRD, namely Equinox, Grove, Nuts 3, and The Mucus Flow.

I use DSDA-Doom 99% of the time for single-player stuff. I use the software renderer, 800x600 resolution, 35 FPS, and I don't use mouselook except for rare cases where I'll briefly enable it if I need to see something well above or below me.

God damn how do you make these so fast??? I was playing this a few months ago and I had assumed it was more or less done. Haven't gotten the new version yet but the video of Thy Chex Consumed reminds me of the chaotic texturing of the leftover Doom levels in Chex Quest (which happened to be my first experience playing Doom).
