I just played a quick 3 hour round of doom 1. Once I reached e3m8 and beat it, and as the ending screen scrolled bye, a sense of such pleasure made me shead a tear of pure joy.

Nope, you're not alone, especially if it riles your killing urges when map authors decide to mark certain lines "not on map" or design architecture which can't be fully mapped.
One thing I loved about the 32X version of Doom was that the automap could be filled in while viewing it. That made things so much easier. -
