I must ask, what's a "Microsoft mentor", expect for being someone who apparently gives you very cool birthday gifts?
A friend wiser than I am, a programming principal who's taken to educate me about the structure of the company, business models, and currently C#. I've just gotten a stack of books from him on that.
The fact that I've built many of his computer didn't hurt either. -

Also does anyone else have plans for thanksgiving this year?

But my friends and my brother have been sending me text messages all week wishing me a happy birthday. I have literally been wished a happy birthday ~150 times now.
I fucking hate birthdays -
I tried starting my desktop up yesterday only to have a corrupt screen as soon as it got to the desktop. I tried restarting my computer a couple more times only to have the same thing happen each time. After two more tries I booted it up in safe mode, with no problem. Thinking maybe it was the drivers, I removed them, and started it up again normally. No problems at all. As soon as I reinstalled the drivers though, the problem resumed. I took it in to a shop to see if replacing the cards would work (I don't have any spare cards), but they say it'll be three to five days before they can tell me. Still though, I was wondering if anyone here's had any experience with this kind of thing and whether or not it's safe to say it's definitely a problem with the video cards or possibly other hardware.

I've had a could sound cards get flaky when that happen.
Lemme guess... Creative shit? :-p Those get flaky for, well, pretty much any reason.
The last time I had a GFX-specific glitch/lockup/crash however was on a mobo which actually suffered hardware damage:
- A PCIe 7600GT card burned up, and caused computer shutdown with no other apparent damage...yet. Mobo worked fine with a normal PCI card, until I ordered a replacement PCIe card.
- With the defective card IN the slot, my mobo wouldn't start up at all (PSU protection, as I later realized). On a mobo WITHOUT protection however it DID start up...only to cause a RED HOT glowing transistor on the card and a LOT of sparks and Magic Smoke (TM). Yeah, that was one dead card alright.
- The damage to the MOBO became apparent only after I received the new PCIe card: whenever I activated something more "advanced" than desktop/safe mode/video overlay, the computer locked up. Not even a blue screen, just a silent freezing. It did this with THREE different PCIe cards, and also with AGP cards in the AGR slot (modified AGP/PCIe transitional slot), but NOT with plain PCI video cards. Therefore there was actual hardware damage somewhere on the mobo itself, which was now usable only with PCI video cards. Not pretty.

Fallout isn't an FPS, so I don't see the issue. Sure it has guns, but the fact that everything is determined by your character's stats and the weapon's damage variables combined kind of throws the FPS deal out the window.
Its just my preference to have fragile enemies, especially when you put on Hardcore mode and you become fragile yourself. That, and I've never been a fan of your weapon skill reflecting damage; I think that the skill should reflect accuracy. It's just different tastes. But NV is pretty much half FPS and half RPG, especially when you factor in ironsights (which lets you play the game without going into VATS once). -

Go play STALKER on master difficulty then.

It's my fuckin birthday. I'm 22 years old, etc, etc, etc.

So the title pretty much sums it up. I picked up a copy of System Shock 2. It cost me a pretty penny but I gotta say, it's worth. Other than the cargo bay (fuck that part. FUCK THAT PART AND FUCK THOSE GOD DAMN SUICIDE BOMBER ROBOTS SO GOD DAMN FUCKING HARD), it's a pretty damn good game. Anyway, I heard that coop for this game was awesome, and I was wondering if anyone with a copy would be interested in trying coop out. If you're interested, let me know if you've got a skype account. It'll make communication (i.e. screaming at you and crying everytime you take something I want) a little easier.

Cool. I.. don't agree with that line though. :p
What difficulty did you play on? What skills did you grab?
IIRC I maxed out strength and standard guns. I also put 4 points into energy weapons and 3 points into agility so I could use the laser rapier. Also 4 points in endurance, 4 points in hacking, and two points in cyber-affinity. Also I went with the cyber assimilation trait

I found one of my teachers from Highschool and decided to add her on facebook. Except there was one little problem. As a joke I had set my profile picture to this:
and I had forgotten to change it back. Awkward moment ensued as soon as she logged on and saw the friend request. -

Yeah this is a thread that deals with some minecraft shit. Deal w/it. Shaikoten set up a minecraft server for Jetsands. The latest thing we did was capture a creeper. Also we named him after someone on this forum (take a guess)

My router pretty much died yesterday and now the only way to connect to the interwebs is by hooking it up directly to the modem. My options at this point are to either get a new router or call Belkin and see if they can do anything to help. I'm leaning more towards getting a new router. This one's a piece of shit that's been giving me a headache for a while. Any suggestions for a new router?

For the most flexibility, use an old computer with two network cards and install a router distribution. I use Smoothwall Express personally. Of course, you'll need a switch or a hub...

Huy's been harassing me to post some pictures of my desktop for a while now and after the 5th time I woke up with a severed horse head in my bed, I figured it was pretty much time to go ahead and post some before something worse happened.
So faggots, check out my mother fuckin rig.
The case:

Another shot of the inside:

Me firing a 9 mm round directly into the motherboard to demonstrate its durability. The motherboard suffered no damage but the bullet ricocheted and hit my kneecap. It was very painful.

Or perhaps I want to play some games that aren't from our world.
But... Another World runs just fine without all that unnecessary processing power.

With the help of Huy Pham, I was finally able to put together a pretty good rig. It took a while and a trip up to Huy's house since I couldn't put in the CPU without fucking it up, but I think it was worth it. I'm also going to add in a second graphics card a little later.
Specs:
Windows 7 64-bit
4 GBs of RAM
AMD Phenom II X4965 Processor 3.4 GHz
ATI Radeon HD 4850 (two of them soon)
and finally M4A89GTD motherboard- Show previous comments 13 more

At $180 you would've been better off with a single 5770. Or buying a pair of used 4870s. A single 5770 is just slightly under a 4890 in terms of performance. Along with less heat, less power consumption, and Direct X 11.
For $180, the optimal graphics processing is a pair of used 4870s indeed, but you also run into difficulties of dealing with online strangers coupled with potential hardware reliability issues. The money saved versus security is essentially up to the individual to decide.
A single 5770 is nowhere near as powerful as a pair of 4850's, and DX11 is irrelevant in the purchasing decision at this point, since none of the GPU's out there are powerful enough to handle much tesselation, and the notable games that uses it are counted on fingers, with minimal tesselation to the point of unnoticable. In other words, DX11, like DX10 at the time of its release, will have to wait until hardware catches up to be employed effectively.
As for the heat and power consumption, if anyone's seen the Antec gaming cases, they are essentially wind tunnels that can blow away their entire air volume in seconds. The amount of money saved by switching to a less power-hungry card is not signficant enough to warrant that big of hit in performance. -
I see what your saying. I've been thinking about replacing my 512mb 4870 with a 5770 for a while. But I can score another 512mb 4870 for alot less. Then I can get all gitty about performance and having two of them crossfiring. For 5770 $ I can add two and have the most pointless yet simultaneously awesome tri-fire rig that only runs shit at 1680X1050. But I think 750Watt wouldn't cut it for 3 and I can barely shoehorn 1 4870 inside it with the PCIE connectors plugged in.

Title pretty much says it all. There's this family that lets their dogs wander around outside. I personally think it's pretty stupid since this is pretty close to what's considered a highway, but I guess they trust their dogs enough to stay out of the road.
Anyway, I was driving home from school when I noticed one of the dogs on the side of the road. It was laying on its side so I figured it had been hit. Honestly it wouldn't have surprised me if it had. There's usually quite a bit of roadkill laying along this road. I figured the least I could do was see if it was wearing a collar with a number I could call, an address I could take it to, or if it was alive see about getting some help for it. Leaving it on the side of the road seemed pretty wrong. If my dog had been hit I'd damn well want to know about it. The problem was reaching him. The only place to really pull over was a small patch of gravel a little ways up the road. I parked there, ran across the street, and jogged over to where the dog lay. When I got close the dog jumped to its feet, looked at me, and then walked away. I am 80% sure it was just trying to be a dick. -

I only got through Putt-Putt. I watched someone else beat Pajama Sam and Freddy Fish cause I sucked at them, and Fatty Bear made my 5 year old brain explode like the guy's head in Scanners.
Especially when the old Windows 98 froze whenever the phone rang. Once I clicked on some kind of light that exploded in Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise, and the computer froze while the light was exploding. It sounded like someone set off the Chaingun in Doom on full blast.
