  1. That's good to hear. I would def try it at some point if you posted the preset or something it looks very interesting what gameplay mod are you using?
  2. I like the 2nd one but i probably couldn't use it for long
  3. If i'm in the middle of a once-a-decade creative spurt, no. Otherwise, yes. 8:30 AM i'm more likely to answer doors than at night, and having the whole rest of the day to play this mystery wad sounds nice. Part of the scenario is that i have to play the wad, which cancels out the factor of my minimal attention span (the reason I very rarely offer to playtest things now)
  4. I just gave it a try and in Options > Gamepad > Select Controller changing it from SDL to XInput seemed to solve the trigger issue (and almost all the buttons mapped correctly in the Xbox360 controller default profile)
  5. Not always, but talk of casually playing continuous usually implies saving. Just reload the save until you make it to some health. Playing continuous also makes you invested in seeing the same "character" make it all the way through the mapset
  6. You do you but i'm not losing all the ammo/weapons i brought from the last map just because of a rough start
  7. The early Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games are on phone I've been playing those
  8. The only thing that comes to mind outside of the obvious one you noted, is seeing a doom map as an uphill battle, something you climb and overcome. if doomguy starts at the top and falls 'down' the map that's just not the feel most maps go for
  9. Runs are posted in Speed Demos Submissions forum in their appropriate thread (follow the pinned thread guide) They are verified by the admins before going into the archive. If there's an issue with a specific demo it should probably go in Other Demos & Discussion
  10. Real Men Love Jesus, and @OP: I definitely understand where these questions come from, when people go on about "this fight in [wad:map] with the archviles" and you played on a different difficulty with no archviles, or you played continuous so that wasn't as stressful. It can feel like you missed out on something special. I like to posit the opposite though. There's some great stuff that hardcore players avoid because the gameplay isn't up to snuff. But with some extra help you can have fun with, whether it be with some cheats or just a bunch of saves. We all have experiences with art that can't be reproduced for everyone, that's just the nature of it.
  11. Ace Combat 5 soundtrack. the first music CDs I ever owned
  12. I do find "Cacowards are just a popularity contest, let's make it a popular vote instead!" to be pretty funny. I get the sentiment though. If you don't agree with the Cacoward judges opinions, it can be easy to think "oh, well if real people chose these they'd look like -list of wads i like- There's been plenty written about why "professional" criticism is important and I agree You can read a bad review of something you like and vice versa but still come out with a fresh perspective, the "ahh i never thought of it that way!"
  13. This is what i would have said if i was better at words (my longwinded way of saying 'this') Also @Fletcher` i was about to go on a rant about Doom 1 wads being underrated until I saw essel's post. I still stand by it though. And I'd never tried Mapgame it's quite good so far
  14. I don't know that there are a lot of wads that get 'too much recognition' because they got a Cacoward. Usually the awarded wads' reputation precedes them I think this happened a bit more in old days since there were fewer people involved. On Tribute's Cacoward entry Hobbs wrote "So why does Tribute get a Cacoward? Well, mostly because I said it does," and I loved that I'd much rather talk about ones that didn't get recognized that are newfound gems, then trying to take down previously recognized works. I think we've all been let down trying an old award winner, but my thought is usually "this just isn't my style" or "maybe it was good for its time", not "wow I wish this didn't get recognized" Finally, I just want to add my usual 'some of us are just here for the show, prefer style to substance, and don't care nearly as much how a map plays' I'd hate to miss out on a beautiful set of levels because "oh the fight choreography was a bit off and I had too many rockets 2/3 into the level"
  15. Yeah that was almost a decade ago at this point. I'm doing better now, thank you and well wishes to you as well
  16. I'm very sorry to hear that. When my granddad passed away we took in their dogs. One of them was this very old Chihuahua-dachsund-something mutt mix. I never liked her much but she always layed by where our game consoles were so I ended up forming a bond with her. One day when I was out I got word that she seemed about to pass. When I got home I found her sleeping and started to pet her. She opened her eyes and saw me and took a big last breath, as if she'd waited to see me one last time. That always stuck with me and I definitely understand that part of your post.
  17. Echoing others in that I'm sad to see it go. Pretty sure Wad Archive is the first place i ever downloaded wads. Hope you're doing ok. Thank you for making the data available
  18. Never change, Doomworld. I remember reading about a company in 1994 making what amounted to a big expansion pack to their masterpiece, and selling it as its own game
  19. Love you for this. Brings to mind the anarchist punk communities of the 80s i wasn't alive to see. As has been stated, I doubt many of us have the academic credentials to give this a formal review if that's what you want The only thing i can add, which you may have mentioned, is that one thing a person can do to move closer to an idea like yours is to get to know your neighbors and work toward setting up systems of mutual aid. Speaking from a US perspective, keeping everyone insulated to their home/car/desk or other work area leaves us ripe for exploitation. Car culture and increasingly long work hours are tools used to keep us itemized and ineffective. The whole point is for a system more equipped to meet everyone's needs with less and less labor (much less than everyone is doing now) as opposed to today's system of either bullshit work or mostly stuff that fills the pockets of those at the top. Ideally people would do a bit of the work they're well equipped to do and with the rest of the time nothing they do is "useless"
  20. I agree in practice but in a case like Ribbiks, his work is so widely celebrated there's little chance they will ever be "lost". The archive gives anyone an avenue to have their work preserved, regardless of profile, popularity, mapping skill and other talents being honed, etc. Not saying /idgames is perfect or that there will never be a better option in that regard, but for example just uploading to the forum attachment space has issues like: to my knowledge, no way to just say "give me all of the wads that have been uploaded directory to Doomworld attachment space" uploader running out of attachment space and deciding to delete old stuff. thinking "well nobody played this wad i posted" when really some lurkers pulled it down and enjoyed it One could look at the Realm667 drama and the ensuing frantic attempt to create a backup of its contents before it ended up coming back up. Even if something similar happened on the /idgames side, it's not like someone could wipe out all the mirrors and backups people have made of the archive.
  21. As long as you aren't still updating it, didn't stuff the WAD with megabytes of copyrighted music, and didn't include items from Doom2.wad or other IWADs, there's little reason not to submit to /idgames. I guess as a more direct answer to your original question, it's not that the /idgames upload is a super special honor for only the best maps, it's just when you see a big project they want to make sure it gets plenty of playtesting before submitting that final product to the archive. It's kind of the final "We're done" stamp of a project
  22. Have you tried @big smoke's Bike Time Trial? It's not the Brutal Doom Vehicles but i wonder if those can be modded in
