PUTSS: Place a Super Shotgun (aka Combat Shotgun) in DOOM I pwads!
One of the pain in using DOOM I pwads with DOOM II is that they have
no super shotgun. This small program quickly places a super shotgun
in DOOM I pwads without using complicated wad editors out there.
Simply type: putss [-difficulty] source [destination]
(difficulty is one of 1, 2 or 3)
to place a shotgun in the source wad. To keep the original wad intact,
specify the destination file name.
"putss" searches for the following items for replacement.
{shotgun shells(4), blue bottle, helmet, clip, stimpak}
The first occurence of any of the above items in the wad is replaced
with SS (I think, absence of single instance of those items will not
affect the game much). To ensure SS's appearance in every difficulty
level, putss will search for only those items that appear in every
difficulty. I hardly expect the case that there's no such item in
any wads, but if it really happens, try specify difficulty levels where
-1: skill 1 and 2
-2: skill 3 (hurt me plenty)
-3: skill 4 and 5 (Ultra violence or nightmare)
This ensures that a SS appears in that difficulty level.
If the wad is a combo wad, putss will put SS only on the first map (isn't
that enough?). On a successful replacement, the item that is replaced
is printed. Of course you have to do other conversion steps to run this
new wad with DOOM II. Multiple execution of putss on the same file may
put several SSs. Hunt the SS down during the game play since nobody knows
where it is.
