About This File

An 'interesting' wad which (unintentionally) shows off the learning curve I've been through in the last 4 years. It's got a very loose story centred around a 'Hell on Earth' sort of theme, just from a more civilian viewpoint. This is now on v1.2, but only the zdoom forumers would have got the original release(s).

^Well, by no means is this the best wad, but most maps are at least average, some are good. Neither good or bad, really, in the end, but closer to good. And not a bad first release either - especially with 23 maps. Worth playing if you've nothing better to do. 3.25/5 + .5 for first release=3.75(4)/5

Small maps, that's good for me. But sometimes annoying and sometimes boring. Perhaps I'll finish normally this WAD instead with cheats, I like to browse through small maps with simple yet nice details. There seems to be a story but I don't like those gfx at the score. And +1 bonus for finally releasing your big work of years :)

Oldchool looking set of maps with some quite good gameplay. The level 31 looks great but its gameplay is worse. I got stucked behind some detail by every step and it was annoying. Creditmap and new baron was great. ;) Damned

Old school levels for the most part, though due to lack of skill. It is fun however, and has some nice new school stuff too, like the credits and the decorate monster in the secret level. 4 stars for this authors first release

Played through the first 3 levels and got sick of it. The only thing really good about this is the new monster and the new ending display.

If you were to take the whole wad as one big chunk, you'd probably find it averaging on just over 3.5. Some parts are quite good (Credits and MAP31 in particular), and others are below average (such as the INTERPIC and some of the early levels). Generally a good effort, with surprisingly addictive gameplay, though I blame the level size for that :). As half marks are impossible, 4 will have to do.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
