Really cool. Gameplay is just fine if you dont SUCK. Never seen maps look as detailed and realistic in Doom before, which is a GOOD thing.

Gameplay was too hard for given difficulty, but other than that, no gripes. 5/5

The gameplay isn't too great, but this obviously isn't what this wad is made for. It is by far the most amazing, detailed, impressive thing ever created for the Doom engine, and, odds are, will remain as the most impressive thing ever created for the Doom engine.

This falls into that most sorry category of wads, i.e. "Zdoom-only due to errors". This appears to have been a product of the authors' attitude - not prepared to ask for help when they couldn't solve problems themselves, not even willing to listen to their own playtesters, and ignoring reviews of the previous version. The maps themselves are outwardly beautiful, but often lacking in true substance - topologically some of them are trivial, as RjY pointed out.

Agree, weird gameplay but it fits the levels, not your typical doom maps. 5/5

Glad this won a Caco! Gameplay is awsome imo. But I can see how it wouldn't be for everyone. If you don't like the gameplay, anyone will agree to atleast clev through the various beautifuly detailed levels. 5/5, ignore the childish Doomworld trolls, give it a shot yourself. And I noticed you have to use the automap a lot, especially map2, so you don't have to guess what doors to open. Greeeeeeat!

these maps are incredible, the best I've ever seen, any shortcomings in the gameplay can be forgiven, I could quite happily go around these maps with no monsters on

This is really nice stuff. I had to save all the damn time because some of the stuff is really hard. I know why people think this is frustrating but things look awsome. 4/20/07

Very, very overrated. Just that the maps are some of the best looking around for Doom doesn't offset the totally inconsistent and at times just awful gameplay. Sure, saying this wins a 5/5 for architecture is perhaps an understatement, but I'd be optimistic to give it a 2/5 for GP. I agree: Download this wad to look to look at its levels, then delete it; it's a big waste of space otherwise. If they had done even a little to balance the gameplay, we'd have a true classic, but this isn't it.

Can't believe people have said: "Only noobs hate the gameplay" No, no, I don't suck at DOOM. The authors suck at monster-placement. 2/5

Pretty good stuff overall. The maps are definetly atmospheric and fun to play. Probably one of the better level sets released this year. I hope the author(s) make more wads in the future. 4/5

Beautiful, epic designs, but so-so gameplay and confusingly large layouts. 4/5 because it's so nice-looking.

This shouldn't have gotten a Cacoaward at all.

Lots of effort, and some absolutely great moments, but too many flaws. Difficulty is ~sometimes~ way too hard. So much promise, but i didn't enjoy the gameplay in the most.

The graphics are top-notch, but the gameplay is puzzle doom. Use cheats and the wad is fun to play!

Beautiful maps, everyones's got to see these. Gameplay is rough at times, while other maps deliver. 5/5 for visuals and some fun maps.

On a technical level this is superb, with 33mb of good-looking textures and enormous maps, with lots of clever design touches. But it still feels schizo; you wander around these large and detailed levels without meeting a monster for several minutes, and then you are hit by a mass of baddies. Map02 is the best-looking "Deus Ex for Doom" level I have ever seen, but you can just run through it, and it's tedious pressing all those doors in order to find keys.

I think one of the skills should have been used for a typical doom gameplay because I don't like this one. but I respect the author's work - 5 stars for the visuals.

I'll make an exception and give it 5 despite the fact that I couldn't make it to the finish and didn't enjoy a minute of what I played. sorry. I'd stick to trying to make a gr8 megawad instead of 12 hugegantic, beautious but utterly boring maps.I don't agree with the "hellrevealed without the ammo" gamepl., but I know how much effort went into this, so... Music and atmosphere in map 01 was so immersive as if I could smell the air in the docks, my personal fav, beautiful...

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
