Doom the Way id Did

About This File

"At some point in time I got the idea that it would be really fun if John Romero dusted off the ol' doom editor and made another map for Doom episode 1 for old time's sake. He once replied to an email saying 'maybe I will!' but never did get around to it as far as I know.

This project asks the contributors to carefully study the original maps and try to make them as John Romero and Sandy Petersen did.

The guiding principle in the project is to pretend that id Software initially intended to release Doom as a three episode, 30 level game, but somehow lost three levels; one from each episode.

The mappers for the project are trying to create those lost tenth levels, except we are extending this concept to be a full 3 episode replacement.

Our goal is to make the 'lost' maps as authentically as possible to be convincingly mistaken for original levels from the game, to recreate Doom the Way id Did."

Yea I agree, this thing doesn't come close to the original DOOM experience. Pacing and progression is nowhere near as good. To me this feels more like a grab bag of 90's PWADS, and certainly not a professional IWAD. 3/5.

The maps are competent, but it's a dull and pretentious concept. 3/5

If you go into this thinking it's going to be exactly the way id did, you will be sorely disappointed. However, if you are into superb level design with an emphasis on puzzles and secrets, this instant classic definitely delivers all the wonderful tropes and cliches that made DOOM so great in 90's.

Feels a lot like the original, good job on that! However, IMO the maps are getting a little too repetive in the end (2nd half of E2 and 3 in particular). The often mazey layout of the maps works great in Doom, but here it started to annoy me after a while because most of the maps are somewhat larger than their original counterparts and are not always as memorable. I would have appreciated a little more variation in terms of map themes too. Still 4/5

5/5 because I'm a sucker for the classic style, and this pulled it off to the T.

The problem with most wads is, They are changing Doom. And in my opinion, Ruining it. Wads like Action Doom make Doom a completely different game. This wad is Doom done RIGHT. Its a return to the classic style. Thank you so much, Various and the other million people credited. I salute you.

It does feel like a wad made by id, sort of...but very good of old school-like mappack. Only problem in this wad for me is the E3M7 is too maze and not too fun with that, and traps in E3M8 just...oh, fuck them, I just rege-quit due get killed by damage floor on lift after got crushed and only had 10 health left. 4/5

i liked it. hella easy though and as always not enough use of power weapons. only one cyber and one spiderdemon in the entire megawad, wtf! don't like the concept either, should be called 'doom the way doomworld did'

It brings back the good old level design of the Classic Doom. I got lost, a lot. But still, this is one hell of a map pack. Totally worth the download. This is one of my favorite wads so far.

haven't finished it yet, but its great quite reminiscent of the original iwad. Dull start, but then again if e1m1 and e1m2 didn't have the nostalgia working in their favor, i'd probably think the same about them. Also it's harder than the original iwad so that's good too.

Some of the maps are so akin to vanilla Doom style, that I actually felt nostalgic.

Good work everyone, that's for all the hardword, especially Xaser, ellmo, esselfortium, and Hellbent. On that note it sure is funny seeing how many people missed the point of the project.

Pretty good. It almost feels like you're playing the original Doom, and some maps like E2M1 (haven't played much more, though) are damn pretty too. This is an incredible project! Congratulations to the whole team. However, I also found some levels to be dull or somewhat restrictive in the resemblance to the original, and I blatantly disliked E3M8 which resembles little the E3 feel. Still, I find this to be an awesome piece of art. 4/5

A worth to play wad. Many secrets, many space for exploring. E3M7 is the best of E3.

Good WAD, some maps are too similar and lookalike (especially E1 maps) but all in all great mapset :D 4\5

Very true to who noted it above, the original Doom levels were NOT perfect and thus the fact that this has its imperfections is only consistent with the concept. Really it isn't fair to throw a complaint here if it was something you didn't like in the original either. If you've grown past the originals, this might not be your cup of tea, but if you haven't it should be a fun ride. There is plenty of stuff that's in the original style w/o copying it aspect for aspect, which arguably makes this unique.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
