Doom the Way id Did

About This File

"At some point in time I got the idea that it would be really fun if John Romero dusted off the ol' doom editor and made another map for Doom episode 1 for old time's sake. He once replied to an email saying 'maybe I will!' but never did get around to it as far as I know.

This project asks the contributors to carefully study the original maps and try to make them as John Romero and Sandy Petersen did.

The guiding principle in the project is to pretend that id Software initially intended to release Doom as a three episode, 30 level game, but somehow lost three levels; one from each episode.

The mappers for the project are trying to create those lost tenth levels, except we are extending this concept to be a full 3 episode replacement.

Our goal is to make the 'lost' maps as authentically as possible to be convincingly mistaken for original levels from the game, to recreate Doom the Way id Did."

It's alright. E1 is fine but the later levels have some rather annoying progression. Also, way too many timed secrets where something opens for a few seconds and then closes. The combat is straight up boring with more zero-threat monsters to shoot though than the original Doom.

If you showed this to someone who had never seen Doom, they could truly believe this was the original game. Relive the same experience as you did back in 1993, only with larger and more difficult levels. Now, a lot of areas feel a little cramped, but this wad is awesome.

E1 was incredible in this mapset. Loved it, and it reminded me a lot of the original, without ever feeling like it's copying anything. E2 often feels tedious. The maps are too big given their maze-like structure, and have too many Cacos and Barons. Progression's mediocre. E3's better than E2, but has a silly amount of damaging floors. I had a good time playing the WAD, but other than the stellar E1, this mapset does not live up to its potential at all

This set is very well designed, very much in homage to the original. I like the progression. The secrets are kind of gimicky and overdone, even when compared to the secret-within-secret s of the original. Otherwise, this is well with a download for anyone who enjoyed Doom 1.

Great idea and good mapset, but I wasn't keen on most of E1 and E3. I prefer Doom's E1, but in this mapset, E2 seemed better to me (on average). Also, I've played D1 for the first time much later than D2, so that's why nostalgia didn't strike me so much. I feel that this wad is a bit too overrated. Lastly, I think that emulating little design imperfections (unfitting texturing or alignment etc.) in the style of original id mappers wasn't a good move. Still, 4/5, these maps are quality and enjoyable.

Pure, simple, DOOM fun for all the family. If you don't feel the original DOOM in these maps, then you must be feeling odd!

I'm playing this currently with DOOM 2 as I don't have full DOOM 1, only shareware, so I went through all episode 1 maps with pistol start and made them without even dying once! They were easy but I actually used RL to kill barons at end instead of shotgun and chaingun. Still a very good wad, it's one of those "vanilla" wads. 5/5

Disappointing, doesn't live up to the hype..... take the hype away and hat do you have? Boring lifeless maps. Sorry guys, better luck with DTWID 2

This is really nostalgic. If you want modern zdoom effects, look elsewhere. This is pretty classic. It's not perfect, but it's still a great experience. I'll give it 4/5.

the premise of this famous project is right in the title. "the way id did". if it weren't for that, we'd all honestly think this was just another Doom 1 3-episode replacement megawad. while some of us probably don't give a shit about the semantics of the project, some of us Doomers are real die-hards, studying just about every particular detail our mapping forefathers in Petersen, Hall, and Romero did, and making maps that felt like a new experience yet at the same time keeping those core values. the final result had to scrap a fucking shit-ton of maps (which became the lost episodes wad) and we are left with the elites. it's a very replayable set.

also take note that the beta downloads page does NOT include Ultimate Doom the way id Did yet, just use the legacy version in the meantime for that.

Anybody who complains about gameplay problems such as maziness and lack of difficulty, fail to realize that those things existed in the original maps too. It's kind of funny, actually. 4/5 for what it tries to accomplish, even if nostalgia gets in the way of good design decisions.

I thought the project goal would have been hard enough to pull off with the consistency of a single mapper, tbh, so to have crafted maps this convincingly id with an entire community is pretty damn impressive. It plays well, looks fresh, and has unique intermission maps! Sweet. 5/5

Not exactly how id would have done it. The originals arent this mazy. Most maps look alright for the low detail, though. Best map was E2M1 (awesome!!), worst map must be a tossup between E3M3 or E3M6 (terrible!!). Overall decent effort imo, but nothing special 3/5.

Amazing, and not just because it's nostalgic. Every level in this wad is an absolute blast to play. Very well done. 5/5

I don't really understand the excitement about this. The maps just seem dull to me, and there have been far more interesting wads that have paid homage to the original id levels. I forced myself to play many of these maps just because of the work that apparently went into this project and because of the praise being heaped upon it, but quit when it started to feel pointless.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
