Description : A somewhat difficult DOOM 2 map playable with
any limit-removing engine. This map was
originally meant as a remake of MAP21 of Doom 2
("Nirvana"), but soon became its own thing
entirely. The original Sanskrit word "nirvana"
meant "extinguished", hence the level's name.
This wad features a custom palette that I made
myself. I think that it gives the level a more
grim and less cartoony vibe without being quite
as dim and dark as Sigvatr's PalPlus palette.
A note regarding one feature of this level: If
you reach the exit, having slain every monster
in your path, and yet the map screen shows that
100-150 monsters still roam the map, you have
not accessed all areas of this realm, and thus
you have not thwarted the Gatekeeper's attempt
to drive you insane. Search harder.
Story : (This level takes place directly after Doomguy
exits MAP20 of DOOM 2.) You have arrived in
Hell, and as the only marine tough enough to
withstand and defeat the demonic onslaught, you
know what you must do: pass through this foul
illusion and destroy the Source of Evil once and
for all. But the Gatekeeper has decided to use
a different approach against you. This time
the diabolic deity is assaulting your mind as
well as your body, causing you to question your
own sanity. As you struggle through this unholy
realm, in which Earth-like architecture and
infernal structures are cruelly wed, you begin to
experience the early stages of
artificially-induced dementia. As your grip on
reality begins to loosen, you come to the
unnerving realization that in order to fully
conquer the demons within your own brain, you
must access all areas of this twisted nightmare
world and kill every creature that lurks within.
Can you survive this plane of Hell before you
lose your mind entirely?
