About This File

Area 51, The militarys not so top secret base in Nevada, rumored to be the high tech research center and holding area for aliens, has cut off communications with unnamed high ranking officials in Washington DC.
We are sending you in alone to investigate armed with latest technology. You will have a security pass bio-chip inserted under your skin so you can enter all tightly controlled ultra secure areas. The bio-chip will allow you to get through the bio- scanners without tripping the alarm. However, If it is damaged or exposed to high levels of radiation it may not work. Also, It is untested on the gene scanner under construction there. Try to aviod this area if possible. If you trip an alarm try and find an escape route pronto. It is possible the compound houses a UFO. This may be your only means of escape once you enter AREA 51!

Don't want to spoil the secrets they are working in here. Alien technology? Spaceships?

The truth is out there, but so are lies.

A really good and intricate level sets in the infamous Area 51 from one of the Squadron 247 mappers, with a very interesting techbase classic theme in the style of levels like the invade series or galaxia, with brand new textures and sprites that i really enjoyed (awesome flying brain and the alien guy, even if the aliens with that yellow suit make me think that aliens are going to cook meth with Walter White lol)

Again, a really, really enjoyable map, worth the download! Too bad it is incomplete and misses the final map...

Out of 500,000 people who showed up to storm Area 51, you were the person smart enough to travel back to 1997, a whole 20+ years before the US Air Force expected your arrival. Even back then, the military installation was armed to the teeth with custom high fences, guard posts and a complex interior structure of underground rooms. Armed with only your pistol, with the Mission Impossible playing in midi form you are able to Doomguy run your way inside make it inside to find 'dem aliens and rescue green plasma technology.

Area 51 is a grand two level excursion that flows nicely, has a lot of content to its levels, good fights, diverse locales and some custom artwork. There is a new reskinned hover beast, barrels and rivers full of yellow glowing ooze, yellow hazmat suited foes, and plenty of text to guide you as if you were in the real facility. You'll trudge through sewers, explore pristine clean rooms, trek through some unique architecture with deep lifts, sprawling staircases, big rooms and tight corridors.

This .wad is dare I say 95% good to great and a real gem from the era, but the worst parts are the early lack of ammunition that gets balanced out over time and the use of pitch black corridors. There are monster closets and a few chaingun snipers, but nothing that truly hinders the experience for more than a few moments. Everything else is an enjoyable challenge that gets punctuated every so often with a revenant or a baron here or there. These are the beasts contained, but you'll mostly be slugging it out with humans, imps, specters and pinkies..

It has withstood the test of 20 years and was still an enjoyable 40 minutes to get through today. Your results may vary. Make sure to quick save!

Everybody, storm this WAD. They can't stop us all. #thatjokewillremainrelevant

Honestly, this is stellar work for a 1997 WAD. By today's standards the custom sprites may be a little ropey, the new sounds clashing, and the cute little edits to the IWAD assets probably less-cute. But in the context of an era in which WinTEX was the best tool around (shudder) this is actually a gem. Two maps with questionable midi choices (Mission Impossible's theme tune I can both understand and forgive; White Wedding? I have no idea what the author was thinking on that one) but they're filled to the brim with neat little immersive touches that make it worth playing today, even if only out of curiosity.

So go clap some alien cheeks! ;)

A great and classic WAD from '97, I love that It takes place on a Science Fiction like enviorment. Though, the difficulty Is pretty rough around the edges, but other then that, It's a spot on WAD that You'll have fun with. 5/5.

Legendary WAD, one of my favorites as a child. I think this was the first time I had seen custom grahpics in Doom and I was blown away. It's still great fun today.

Outstanding. Good work on the graphics, unique atmosphere/appearance, and the gameplay bounces along nicely. Not at all easy (on UV) but it's quite feasible to play all the way through without using saves. The ammo supply is quite generous, but not absurdly so.

A pretty cool classic mod. This was one I played years ago... never could quite finish it because I wasn't great playing and it is slightly difficult... well not that difficult by modern level standards. I still recommend it. It's a good play. Seems like there could be more added to it. 4/5.

Icarus-style, but only two maps, quite big. Notable for cacodemon sprite replacement (also WolfSS sprite replacement, but this one sucks). Cool layout, pretty good effort overall. 4/5 stars, vdgg

A 90s science fiction wad made with love and care. Secret military bases, aliens, explosions, Billy Idol... And it's from the guys that were a part of the Squadron 417 team. 18 stars.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
