Pegleg Posted February 3 (edited) Welcome to another month and the latest installment of the IronEagle competition, the ironman challenge that welcome everyone who plays Doom, from the player still figuring out which button does what to the player so experienced they play blindfolded. As long as you enjoy playing Doom, and are willing to give it a try continuously and without saves, then come on in, you're among friends! This month, participants will challenge themselves against the Cacoward-winning mapset Preacher, a Boom-compatible 10-map set for Doom 2, released by @Darch in 2018. Preacher tells the story of a preacher who has gone quite mad and hears voices in his head telling him to cleanse the world of evil. Participants must play these maps on complevel 9 or Boom(strict). Download Preacher here. Preacher starts at Map 01. Survival is finishing Map 09. Map 10 is a credits map without an exit. Enjoy! Congratulations to this month's winners (further details are in the post below). UV: @SCF (Runner-up: @Maribo) HMP: @LadyMistDragon (Runner-up: @head_cannon) HNTR: @Andromeda (Runner-up: Pegleg) Spoiler Template for PRBoom+: -iwad doom2.wad -file preacher.wad -complevel 9 -skill <x> -warp 01 -record <IEpreacher> Template for ZDoom: -iwad doom2.wad -file preacher.wad +compatmode 6 -skill <x> +map map01 -record <IEpreacher> it is possible you may have to use +set skill <x> for GZDoom <x> must be replaced by the skill level. 2 = HNTR, 3 = HMP, 4 = UV <IEadoom> would be replaced with whatever you decide to call your demo, if you're submitting a demo Rules: The rules are basically the same as they have been. Either demos or streams are permissible. If you are creating a demo, post the demo. If you are streaming, post a video of the stream. Even if streaming, you can still submit a demo, if you want to. The basic rule is that you submit a demo/stream played at a particular difficulty level (HNTR, HMP, or UV) and you play without saving and reloading, ending your run when you die (or survive). The following are allowed (but not required): Freelook Crosshair Mods that are COSMETIC ONLY The following are NOT allowed: Crouching Jumping Mods that change ANY aspect of base gameplay, including (but not limited to) enemy behavior, enemy speed, player abilities, player speed, weapon damage, ammo, and enemy drops. Further, more specific, rules are listed below: Spoiler Submissions (except for streams, as described below) must include a demo. You may practice a mapset if you want, but these practice runs should not be submitted as your official entry, and your run would be Category 2, unless there are exceptional circumstances (such as described below). A run must be done in a singular sitting with no saves. (With room for breaks. This will be addressed below.) Streams and video runs are accepted provided you post a video of the stream/run or a link to the video. If you post a video of the stream, you may post a demo if you want, but it is not mandatory. You may also post a demo if you, for some reason, do not want to post the video or a link. Secret levels, if present, do not have to be completed for a survival run. If they are completed, they are extra credit. Any port is accepted provided it will actually run the mapset. There is no preference. Spoiler Of course, if you want to try a limit-removing/Boom map in Chocolate Doom, be my guest. However, be aware that your run may be over rather quickly. Don't say you weren't warned. Category System: Category 1: Blind run. This explains itself. You have no knowledge of the wad and have not played/seen it before. I'm willing to be somewhat lenient with this Category. For example, if you die early in Map 01, and then decide to play again for your run, you can still call it Category 1. Category 2: Non-blind. If you have played the wad before and/or possess significant foreknowledge, your run is non-blind. Basically, anything that is not Category 1 is Category 2. If you're unhappy with your blind run, feel free to record a new run, and submit that run instead. (Just don't submit your first run.) If you want to submit your first run, no matter how you perform, by all means, go ahead and do it. You shouldn't feel that you HAVE to submit a run you're dissatisfied with, just to preserve a "Category 1" status. If you want to go back and submit a second run, you're welcome to do so, but, at this time, it won't be counted. Difficulty System: You may submit a demo/stream for only one of HNTR, HMP, or UV. Choose only one, because subsequent submissions will be rejected (i.e., if you submit a HMP demo, the HNTR demo you then submit will be rejected). We're not using the 1CC rule set here. Your first submission is what counts. Only runs from the same difficulty will be pitted against each other. Each difficulty will be graded separately. Submission: When you submit your run, please the include the following information: The category (1 or 2) The difficulty If you survived, your time If you didn't survive, the map where you died Time of death Kill count upon death Time upon entering your map of death (if you made it past the first map) The port you used (if you included a demo) A link to the stream/video (if you did a stream) You may include a commentary about the maps or details about them, if you want to. If you do include specific information about the map (e.g., "The demon trap in Map 08 is rough"), please put it in a spoiler, so that people that want a completely blind experience won't be tipped off. If you're just putting in a general comment (e.g., "Pro tip: don't get hit"), then no need for a spoiler. Attempting to max the maps is not necessary to win. Ranking for this mapset will be determined by: Survival Time for survival Map of death (in descending order: Map 09, Map 08, Map 07, Map 06, Map 05, Map 04, Map 03, Map 02, Map 01) Time it took to reach the map of death Kill count in the map of death If you die, please wait a few seconds before quitting. Breaks: Everyone gets tired. Sometimes people survive longer than they expected. Nature calls. Every now and then, there are family emergencies. Needing to take a break shouldn't necessarily end a promising run. While you should try to complete the run in a single setting, this isn't always possible. If you have to take a break, try to make it quick. Happy Dooming! Anima Zero Posted February 3 Cat 1 UV Died on Map 5 Entered at 40:46, died at 44:48 with 64/159 enemies DSDA-Doom 0.27.5 Note to self - If there's a key in this wad, don't screw around killing enemies if you go near it. There's always something that goes bump in the desert that will end you, especially if you're very low on health. Surprisingly fun wad honestly. Looks good, plays great, good challenge throughout. Suitepee Posted February 4 https://youtu.be/GRPCdJzLzYw Category 1 run on UV, starts at around 28:10. I was tilted after map 2 honestly, then died on map 3 with 37/190 monsters killed to something or other. I wouldn't suggest playing this one blind. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
SCF Posted February 6 Category: 2 Difficulty: UV Survived in 43:23 DWIE-24-02_Preacher_SCF.zip I've played Preacher a few times before, but my first attempt at an IronEagle run met a pathetic end in the first map, so I went and practiced until I managed to beat it. At first I was having a miserable time, but I ended up finding a pretty reliable route for every map, and it ultimately turned out to be pretty fun to run. You're given a lot of freedom, and there's very few places that lock you in so you can really speed through it. I didn't look at any other (speed)runs of the WAD, so my strategies are probably far from optimal. Comments per map: Spoiler Map 1: Pagan Temple For those who only played Preacher once for this IronEagle and never again, the orange teleporter at the start of every map is "randomized" and can take you to many different locations. It was done by simply dividing the teleporter linedefs into short pieces with different tags, so the angle at which you hit the teleporter determines your destination. It's not easy to consistently hit the same trigger, which is a challenge for this sort of thing. In this map I normally spawn closer to the red key, but this time it took me somewhere different which disoriented me. The first map is very easy thanks to the invulnerability. The only tricky part is getting the mancubus out of the way so you can grab the supercharge behind him. Usually he either comes out like he did here, or starts infighting the imps, but sometimes he doesn't want to cooperate. Getting a BFG right at the start of the run is a great help for some later maps. Map 2: Babel This map was a nightmare until I found a consistent approach. The path to the red key is precarious, enemies will get in your way, it's easy to miss the lift, and sometimes you get blocked by an imp on the ground floor. This teleporter angle very consistently takes me to the bottom, which I clear out first to avoid getting blocked later. I like that Preacher gives you a ton of rockets, so I don't have to worry about using them. This particular run was awful. When going for the red key, I normally kill the two revenants in the closet with rockets, and then wait until the pedestal is on its way up. But I missed my rockets, and then wrongly assumed the rev would die in one or two shotgun blasts. And of course I also missed the key. It's not hard to recover, but it wastes time and ammo. Map 3: Sacrificial Altar The teleporter destination doesn't really matter since you're always near the courtyard. I take out some of the hitscan first before getting the SSG secret. There were a lot more enemies swarming around the blue key than usual, including a stray caco. I was also caught by surprise by the chaingunners right after, since they normally wake up earlier and join the party in the center. Otherwise, nothing to worry about. I grab the secret backpack because it's quick and lets me stock up on cells for later levels. There's also a secret mega armor I could've gotten before exiting, but I don't think it's worth it. Sometimes the way out gets swarmed and it's annoying. Overall, this is one of the easier levels. Map 4: Dark Tower The best starting location is near the yellow key, since you don't have to raise the bridge. I didn't get it this time, but the tower is fine too. I didn't spend a lot of time analysing this route, but doing the red key last brings you right to the end and you don't have to deal with those pesky archviles from far away. I use the BFG liberally here because the first archvile is unpredictable, and sometimes you get targeted as soon as you drop down. I'd rather waste 40 cells on two imps than die at this point. You can definitely ignore the second vile and just exit, but I always have a hard time hitting the switches while blinded by flames. Map 5: 40 Days in the Desert Again the teleporter took me to the wrong location. I never even visit that place normally so it took me a while to find my bearings. Normally I want to start at the plasma pickup near the yellow key, but otherwise the route doesn't really change. When you get the red key two archviles spawn in, but this time one of them went on an adventure. The 3 key secret isn't far out of the way and gives some nice goodies (plus two cell pickups on the way). Map 6: Noir I don't have a consistent setup for the start, but I all I have to do is get to the north side. Grabbing the invuln after the blue key lets me skip most of the level. Sometimes one of the archviles teleports to the basement room and I have to BFG him, but this time he didn't. The jump to the yellow key is a little annoying because of the constantly lowering platform, but you just have to go as soon as possible. Map 7: Sanctuary This is the first map I didn't have a precise route for, just a strategy for each of the keys. Although I think the path I took this time was the best one yet. There's a roaming cyber who can turn up in the places you least expect him, so sometimes you have to improvise anyway. I want this particular starting location so I can take out the chaingunners ahead of time. The blue key is the scariest part, although I don't think you can get hit through the bars as long as you stay out of blast range. I was hesitating doing it first because it was a waste of a supercharge/mega armor, but the rest of the level isn't that bad anyway. Plus, doing it before waking up more of the castle reduces the chance of enemies flooding in and blocking your exit. I take it safe for the yellow key and clear out the area first, and the red key is trivial. Once you have all three keys, you can go back to the start for a megasphere and some ammo, but I didn't need it, and I was still traumatized from a previous run that ended right at the end when the cyber sniped me there. Map 8: Witch Hunt This is where the run comes to a halt. I don't have a quick and reliable way to do this map, especially with all the cybers, so I just take it slow. If you clear out everything, you can basically just collect all the keys and leave immediately. I had no idea where the first cyberdemon teleported to (usually it's the center area), so I was pretty cautious and just kept moving. Of course he showed up right when I was dealing with the pain elemental. Note to self: don't fight a cyber on a raising floor. Thankfully there's a ton of health on the hill in the center, and I still had a spare megasphere. I took the wrong lift at the end, but thankfully I got out fine. Map 9: Crown of Thorns This was actually my first time getting this far after practicing map 9. I found a consistent way to teleport to the right place, by not turning at all at the start of the map and strafing slightly to the right. You can still run forward and then backward to get the megasphere and some of the ammo first, except... I was almost at full health and didn't want to waste the mega, so I had to move around it and ruin my setup. There's a lot of annoying hitscan mobs to ruin your day if you're not expecting them, but I got a decent start. I like to do the blue key first since it's easy, then yellow to since it has a megasphere to replenish my health, and finally red. My normal starting position takes me right to the blue key, and also lets me take out some of the shotgunners and chaingunners first. Since I came from another direction this time, they almost got me on the way out. Fumbled on the yellow key by missing the switch, but it wasn't a big deal. The real danger is getting blocked by a caco or lost soul on the way out and eating a cyber rocket. The red key is easily the scariest, especially the first part. I used more BFG shots than usual and still missed a revenant. Almost died on the way out, since I never have that many enemies blocking the doorway. I took the long way around to the three key switch so I don't wake up more enemies. And that's is where I realized this could be the run and played very, very safe. That small area killed me way too many times in practice. It's too cramped to make good use of the BFG, you're getting flanked from all sides, and the enemies inside the room are hard to see. So I just... waited and killed everything that came my way. This has the additional upside of getting rid of all the wandering cacodemons before the finale. The IoS fight is not hard, but still nerve-wracking when you're 40 minutes in. I don't know the best way to hit Romeros' head, so I just sort of spam rockets from the stairs until it works. I don't like going down into the blood pit, even for a megasphere, but circling around the perimeter is pretty safe. 8 Quote Share this post Link to post
Darch Posted February 8 Hey, thanks @Pegleg for choosing Preacher this month! It's been a blast to watch these runs. @Anima Zero when I started watching your demo, I was sure I misread the category because you seemed to know exactly what to do, especially on maps 1 and 2. Impressive. @SCF yours has got to be the best run I've seen of this wad. I've never seen anybody beat map09 without saving or dying before. I can't do that. I might try a run myself, just for fun. 7 Quote Share this post Link to post

Maribo Posted February 9 DSDA-Doom v0.27.5 Category 1 Difficulty: UV Survival in 100:21 (1h40m21s) ie63_preacher_maribo.zip Spoiler I have seen bits and pieces of this wad before (screenshots, walked around the first room, read about aspects of it) but I'm going with Cat 1 because I don't think any of that contributed in a significant way to solving the maps. Incredible WAD. Immaculate presentation and mood, great sprite replacements all around, map layouts that play to the strengths of the 2-3 key hunt design. Moderately disorienting at the start when you're getting used to all of the sound replacements, but you get used to it like any other heavily modified Doom work. Would love to see Darch run this, creators playing their own WADs (regardless of age) is always entertaining. 6 Quote Share this post Link to post

Darch Posted February 11 Category 2 UV DSDA Doom Dead: MAP04 This was actually my third run. The other ones were disappointingly short; I died on maps 02 or 03. I was surprised that I couldn't get at least to MAP07, when things start to get harder. Back when I was balancing difficulty, I could pistol start all maps, except for MAP09. Beating them all in one sitting is harder than I thought, but you guys make it look easy, especially playing blind.
