Octillion Posted October 15, 2019 With the recent reimagining of certain maps popping here and there. I couldn't help but think what if this was a weekly/monthly contest (Depending on the size of the map.) between the mappers interested in the subject. I mean, it would be interesting to see versions of "The Chasm", or "Barrels o'fun" for instance and see each mapper's perspective and take on the map. We might even go so far as to reimagine certain custom wad maps, (With the permission from the wad author ofcourse.) ranging from good ol' 90's to the modern ones. This might help improve mappers to improve their versatility or even get an idea on their own work in progress wads. Of course, this would have to be supervised by veterans and specific rules to be implemented depending on the map in question. What do you think? 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Guardsoul Posted October 15, 2019 I´m sure I am the one to blame for this. Now on topic: This reminds me to one contest I was part of where we had to create a map given a specific music and it had lots of attention back in the day. In my opinion this is a great way for everyone to show their own visions of a map (how they think it should be, what challenges must the players face, and so on). 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Maximum Matt Posted October 16, 2019 I'll be the one to put a button in that room of The Spirit World, instead of that shootable wall. Friggin' hated that. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
DynamiteKaitorn Posted October 16, 2019 There's definitely a good few maps from DooM/DooM II/TNT/Plutonia I'd happily give a re-design so if such an idea like this occurs, count me in for some of them! :D 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Dexiaz Posted October 16, 2019 I always thought to recreate D2 Map02 "Underhalls" into Subway map like DN3D did... 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Walter confetti Posted October 16, 2019 (edited) Interesting idea, especially the custom pwads remake idea, that is a interesting concept that I never saw used properly... Sure, there is 1994 tune-up project and some other similar projects, but they are confined to the mere tuning of the original levels instead of a personal remake of it... However, some more options comes to my mind for spicing things up: Levels based upon the original map title, like the In name only saga, but also including custom wad titles Similar to the above subject, a midi track inspired by original music tracks of doom and other games! Remake any level you want but for another game. For example: remake Entryway in Hexen Something in the style of "the way ID did", where you imitate any mapper you like style in a brand new map More silly spoiled options: Spoiler Maps based upon things shape (for example a cacodemon) or Maps using the thing name as a title Maps inspired by the stock music track title (for example, "running from evil") Maps inspired by author name (for example, skillsaw) Remake any level you want but the theme changes drastically from the original, even taking really weird directions (for example, remaking Hell Keep but it's a... pizzeria, yeah is the first thing come into my mind, sorry) Edited October 16, 2019 by Walter confetti 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
RonnieJamesDiner Posted October 17, 2019 I always thought a classic re-imagining of the DOOM 2016 levels by name and intro statement alone would be interesting (despite there only being 13). MAP01: The UAC -- So you walk eternally through the shadow realms, standing against evil where all others falter. May your thirst for retribution never quench, may the blood on your sword never dry, and may we never need you again. MAP02: Resource Operations -- Broken free from your prison, pitted against evil, the cycle begins anew. To discover the cause of the demonic invasion, first locate and align the communications satellite in the Resource Operations facility. MAP03: Foundry -- With the satellite back online, the full scale and origin of the attack is revealed. Olivia Pierce, the Lazarus Project's lead scientist turned cult leader, activated a Hell wave and released hundreds of demons from their holding cells in the Lazarus Laboratories. The devastation that followed has left the facility on the brink of complete destruction -- the Foundry reactors are in critical meltdown. Samuel Hayden, a survivor and Head of the Mars facility has offered you his help if you need it. You don't. You just need ammo and a way to stop the meltdown before it tears the base apart. MAP04: Argent Facility -- Olivia Pierce, the cult leader of the UAC, is trying to open a gateway into their dimension. She wants to help bring about the end of this world, another lost soul, fallen under Hell's control. Olivia overclocked the Argent tower, using it to drill a hole into the Hellscape and let Hell's army through. You need to shut down the Argent Tower before it breaks through into their world by disabling the argent filters located throughout the surface complex. MAP05: Argent Energy Tower -- Against Samuel Hayden's wishes, you stopped the production of Argent Energy and delayed the Hell Portal from opening. Still determined to bring the armies of Hell to this dimension, Olivia Pierce has taken an accumulator to the top of the Argent Tower and plans to use it to open a transdimensional rift, blowing open a portal into their world. This cannot happen. You must kill Olivia Pierce. MAP06: Kadingir Sanctum -- The Hell portal is now open back on Mars. Lost in the Hell dimension, you are unable to stop the demons from absorbing our world. Kill everything you see and find a way back to Mars. Etc, etc, etc... Might be fun to see what these level names and narrative ideas turn into on the classic Doom canvas. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
