Sandy Petersen talking about the development of Doom

Recommended Posts

Watched it earlier, being a fan of Sandy's influence on Doom and all, I like that he's very willing to talk about the inner workings at ID Software.

Very interesting video. Sandy seems like such a cool guy. I'd love to hear more stories from him.

Also...

Maybe now he'll consider pulling a John Romero and giving us Sandy.wad... I'd play the shit out of that.

Didn't even know he did videos until now.

I wonder if they still have those models they used for the sprites in game.

Sandy's cool.   But keep in mind he doesn't always remember things totally straight.   Romero has been correcting him a lot on twitter.

I don't exactly believe Romero has a "clean mind" either tbh, so I'm taking both as "potentially true"

Just because Romero is the "god" to the community (even though Doom was a team effort) doesn't mean every word to the letter is law or true.

And Sandy himself has admitted it was 28 years ago or so and he has trouble remembering everything.  Honestly it's easy for details to get jumbled over time into a weird mashup that seems correct until you actually say or write it.  I encounter this constantly and not even with memories that old so I imagine some things could easily be misremembered by any party.

Has Sandy Petersen ever been asked if he had considered going back to making Doom maps like John Romero did recently with SIGIL?

I saw like 1 comment in chat when he premiered the video who was wondering the same thing instead of directly asking. But I think we should ask him. I don't expect it to look like a hyper-detailed wad like everyone else, he's not really known for that anyways. I'm just curious if he's still got the spook factor in his wads. He is the Cthulhu guy after all.

wait, why are the health sprite crosses green on the game footage?

I believe that is because the re-release edited out the red cross, as it is a protected symbol under the Geneva Convention and the Red Cross objects to its use in video games.

Amazing. Something that scares me a lot about releasing a game is that you can be breaking the dumbest law and get sued when you don't even know it.

To be fair, the red cross is an important symbol in terms of humanitarian work.

Well, up until you brought this up i never thought of a red cross being nothing more than a generic symbol of health, not some trademarked logo.

Man, the widescreen HUD looks SO much better in the Unity port, it's actually grey. (Just continuing this pointless derail, don't mind me..)

I really hope we get a new Sandy map, or even a new episode by him some time. That would be awesome. Thanks for sharing this video!

Maybe without his shoulder straps he cannot think straight. But still I enjoyed the video.

Is he?  Most of the time he's mentioned i read backhanded compliments like this, almost as if certain people had so much against him and tried their best to make sure to infect others with their own attitude.

And is this unrealistically high expectation of Romer's 'every word to the letter supposed to be law or true' designed to actually him not being able to live up to such silly expectations and bring him down?  i've read this far too many times.  When Si666il came out this attitude was very much shown by a loud portion of the forum.

But cool that Sandy's talking about Doom again!

"... and that's where the lost souls come from that you know and love now."  Yes.  The lost souls that we know and love now.

Really fun video, though!

A true artist doesn't give the slightest fuck about negative feedback. A true artist creates for themselves first and foremost, NOT the audience.

The Red Cross case is complicated because it's not a trademark (though that didn't stop Johnson & Johnson from trademarking it), it's a symbol protected by the Geneva Convention. Very different situation from the usual intellectual property laws.

Some more videos because people seem to be interested and not everybody has seen these yet. There are actually dozens of great videos, articles and interviews out there for everybody to find with a simple search:

Also @Doomsdλy1993: they certainly still have a few of the models around at the current offices :D! They show them from time to time in interviews with the developers of Doom Eternal.

Do not worry, that is a common misconception. I had a similar reaction when I found out about the change myself. ;)
