Exclusive weapon sounds

DragonFangs

Question

I am very new to DOOM modding, all I know how to do is change sprites and sounds. But I still have a question about sounds, how do I do what D4V did and have each weapon have it's own exclusive sound? How do I make the menu, pistol, and chaingun sounds different for each?

with exclusive sound you mean the firing sound, right?

Well, thats pretty much something like a sprite and the music tracks.

You only need to know the name of the file you want to change, and put another sound file of your choice, with the same name as the original on your own wad to replace it in game already.

There is a photo marking what kind of lumps, as that is the name of the files inside a wad, that you need to change for changing the sound of the different things in game.

Take note that there are two files with the same name but on different format. The sound you choose has to be on, or converted to Sound (Doom format) to be usable during the game.

IIRC, this depends on the source port you're using:

  • If you're using GZDoom, it's possible to change the sounds for the Menu, Chaingun and Pistol using a mixture of Decorate/ZScript and SNDINFO. Other advanced sourceports may have this feature, too, but I'm not sure on specifics.
  • If you're trying to change sounds via a Vanilla or Boom/MBF friendly method, such as Dehacked, you cannot separate the menu sound from the Pistol/Chaingun's firing sound. At least not yet! There's been work put into expanding Dehacked over the last year, so it's possible this may be doable within the year.

In either case, you'd either want to replace the default sound, or create new ones and then define them using an advanced sourceport. If you don't already have it, Slade 3 can be used to open D4V, and from there you can poke around and see how the author of that mod changed the sounds.
