just started my 4th level for ramp this time it is not any of my unreleased or unfinished levels that I am finishing up for ramp but rather a whole new level from scratch for ramp where I play around with many different concepts

I can do better than a screenshot - here's a fly-through!

 

 

This eclectic building is RAMP Central, the hub from which players will be able to explore all the contributors' maps. I had intended to give the project a warmup period in May and run it through June, and hadn't really expected any maps to be submitted until halfway through the month. As of the 4th of June, I have 59 of them in here!

 

The maps will be wrapped up in a game about completing levels for points and coins and other trinkets like that, and I've really been enjoying working what this game is about as I go along with getting to play people's submissions. It's wonderful to see how people people are coming to try Doom for the first time, as well as getting new ideas from people I've seen maps from in the past.

 

The automatic PK3 compiler has just been incredible to have - I have no idea how people organize community projects without it! It's very satisfying to be able to adjust things on my end (or for others to submit their own updates) and to see them reflected in the project immediately. Nobody has yet found any loopholes that crash my server, but I did have to change the way I served the PK3 file recently because its size drifted over 64MB.

Here you are! The pyramid is confusing but promising, the Dogmap is an interesting sort of puzzle map that needs a bit of nudging of the player near the start, I think

Just updated dog map based on the review and given it a reason to have the name (TBH it started as a random name)... it is still WIP though

Absolutely, go ahead! I’ll update the first post, I think July 1st is a good date to switch from accepting new maps to play testing the existing ones.

Hey, uh David, I wanted to have a look at some of those tutorials and my antivirus is picking up a trojan. Probably a false positive on my end, but just thought I'd let you know, just in case.

I gave this try in GZdoom 4.5.0 and I found quite a few bugs, some of them game-breaking:

 

MAP12: switch to the long bridge in the acid pit (linedef 4029) doesn't have switch texture. Also, it seems several secret sectors shouldn't actually be secret.

 

MAP17: this map is unfinished, right? Anyway, chain switch in the rocket laucher trap room produces error P_StartScript: Unknown script "bridgeRaiseWaitLower".

 

MAP23: it doesn't work, I killed the first 10 monsters, but nothing happened.

 

MAP27: player can become stuck in gap behind the red key pillar.

 

MAP29: if you ride up the "red" elevator without the red key, you will become stuck. This needs to be redesigned somehow. Also, multiple sectors are tagged as secret around the plasma gun.

 

MAP36: really confusing map, some important areas are hard to find. I couldn't figure out how to get the red key, so in the end, I just skipped it.

 

MAP40: Gzdoom 4.5.0 and 4.6.0 crashes while loading this map.

 

MAP48: I killed 72 monsters, but then nothing happened, the force fields still prevent me from reaching the exit.

 

MAP57: The animated panels seem to cycle between wrong textures. Also, you can become stuck in lift sector 653 if you jump from above and enter it from sector 652.

 

MAP61: the super-revenant has badly defined hitbox, you can hit it only by shooting its legs.

 

MAP66: in Gzdoom, it's impossible to walk through narrow corridor behind one of the red doors. I know the map is abandoned, but it should be an easy fix.

 

And Gzdoom reports lots of geometry and scripting errors:

I think you should play an updated version, because for example on my map Abandoned (it's just the name of my map), that is slotted at MAP 66) has the 'GOTHPA' texture included plus the Gardentrees and Gardenbush are there now and I think I fixed that corridor thing. However my map has a problem specifically for this project that is that there's a squeaky door sound that is repeating itself over and over, I've contacted @DavidN through his discord but he hasn't replied.

 

 

For the rest of the maps, they could be fixed as well as not, I haven't played them, so yeah

Then yes, you have an outdated version, hell, today someone tested my map and it had those issues and he had downloaded it a few hours before playing it, but I had already fixed those issues, so I suggest you download it again, because this is handled the way it is a mapper can update his map without telling anyone at any time.

 

 

Even if they tell someone it'll most probably be on the Discord server

 

He replied, saying that he'll fix it, because the compiler might've skipped SNDSEQ on the wad file, so yeah, I suppose that later he'll fix it

Great general feedback on the WAD, thanks.

FWIW, Map25 in the WAD is early stages and uses OTEX resources that DavidN will need to manually add to the wad. I advised him it's not worth him doing that until the level is finished. I only added it at a fairly early stage because he asked us to claim spots to give him ideas of numbers. The project has since exploded and has been growing into into a big beautiful monster, but my early stage Map25 is still there.

Yes, while I'm sure that your list will surely be useful to some of the map contributors, please bear in mind that many of these maps are as yet unfinished (especially anything marked with WIP for Work In Progress).

what's the map limit of the set or is it going over 9000?
Because the amount of maps that this set has is insane. Definitely a DUMP inspired map and I'm up to play all of them...

Wonderful to see so many updates and submissions :)

 

I took a small break from video feedback because I spent the last weekend working on the game around the maps - I had had this idea of a trophy room gradually getting decorated throughout the WAD, like the Tony Stark-like space station in Doom Eternal. The trouble was I didn't really know how to lay it out, so I decided to let the player do it themselves, went completely insane and implemented an entire garden building simulator.

As you complete levels, gather points and tokens and so on, you'll unlock more decorations and trophies to display as you like. Maybe some other surprises as well! (I'm not sure what yet - the existence of this whole thing is a bit of a surprise to me as well)

You are fucking insane @DavidN, this is amazing. This project is starting to remind me a bit of Skulldash, just a lot more casual and experimental, and i love that.

 

On that note, i think it would be nice to have special tokens for completing levels under their par times :D

Which raises the question on how to get realistic par times. Try a speed run? Do a no-monster walk through?

The way par times were made for Doom 1 and 2 were by John Romero trying to get through maps as fast as he could (probably on UV), and setting his personal best as the par time for that level. It'd be probably up for David to decide whether the mappers or himself (or a mix of both) get to do that, because i imagine it could get cumbersome to tell people whove already finished maps "oh by the way! can you do this thing to include par times?" given the amount of submissions already in.
