Peccatum Mihzamiz Posted April 2, 2022 (edited) title pic by @dashiefrickintyan Out now, get it here (version 1.1, the 17th of July)! 'Render mode: Hardware' and dynamic lighting are needed for this wad!!! To play it you'll need Doom II and GZDoom. Here's a video explaining how to get started. The final version will be uploaded in the last week of August. The previous version 1.0 was uploaded on the 20th of May. Pac-Man Doom is a 12-map adventure, where you run around mazes and other exotic locations in search of Pac-Dots. Lots of custom sprites immerse you in a world that is both Doom and Pac-Man at once. The 12 maps span a wide variety of locations: from taking you deep inside a computer mainframe and a haunted mansion, to a lush green hedge maze and a beach resort. Keep running and make sure to take care of those Ghost Pinkies!Map 1: Spoiler Map 2 Spoiler Map 3 Spoiler Map 4 Spoiler Map 5 Spoiler Map 31 Spoiler Map 32 Spoiler Map 6 Spoiler Map 7 Spoiler Map 8 Spoiler Map 9 Spoiler Map 10 Spoiler Original project post: Spoiler ようこそ and hello! Welcome to the SIXTEENTH edition of the Pineapple Under the Sea Speedmapping Series. This month’s project is celebrating Pac-Man’s upcoming 42nd birthday. We’ve got some aMAZEing custom resources to bring the world of Pac-Man to life in an arcade near you. So put in a quarter, grab that joystick, and let’s start mapping for Pac-Man Doom! You could make a very ordinary Pac-Man level. Or think out of the box, ponder what it means to be Pac-Man and create something very unorthodox. Water Pac-Man? Space Pac-Man? Car dealership Pac-Man? Who knows. The world is your oyster. And by that I mean let’s go hunting for those sweet pearls and gobble them up! Each mapper gets 4 hours and 20 minutes of mapping time (in honor of Pac-man’s 42nd birthday, of course). DOOM 2 IWAD GZDoom UDMF format. The final wad will target GZDoom v4.7.1 ports. Jumping and crouching are not allowed. Mouselook is optional, but maps need to be beatable without mouselook!!! Co-op starts and difficulty settings are mandatory. The time needed for balancing difficulty levels and adding co-op features does not count towards your maximum mapping time. Please avoid softlocks on co-op. Your map needs to include a maze but: mazes in Doom can easily suck. So it’s up to you to unsuck them and make them rule! Think outside of that box and make something that’s fun to play! And make sure that paths are big enough for monsters to navigate! The mapper has to place down ‘Pac-Dots’ that the player has to pick up (‘eat’) in order to progress and finally exit. See the resource video below. You must use one of each of the 4 pinky replacements in your map. You can not use regular demons or spectres in your map! See the resource video below. You must use the resources provided, and only those provided. Link again over here. You must have one set of (instant) teleporters from one side of the maze to the other, like in the original Pac-Man. I suggest having a look into linedef action 156. Your map’s exit must include the use of the arcade texture (PMARCAD1), as a switch you press to exit, or as decoration behind a walkable linedef. Maps are due either in the related discord channel or in this thread by Tuesday the 10th of May at 11:59 PM PDT. Download link for the resources, once more over here. A tutorial on how to use the resources: The Pac-Dot. Use these to make the player go places. -Want to open a door? You can only open it when you've gobbled up 15 of these. -Want to use a switch that raises a bridge? Sure: just make sure you've eaten 50 of these. The four 'ghosts': Pinky replacements that you to have place in the map, one of each. From left to right: Blue Armor, Green Armor, Armor Bonus, Health Bonus, Berserk, Soulsphere, Invulnerability, Megasphere. All the keys are updated: Your mapping time can be nonconsecutive. Your timer will only go down when you are mapping or playtesting. Speedmaps will be under the honor rule. Neither you nor I can prove if a map went over the time limit or not, but trained eyes can see what is and is not a speedmap. If you cheat, people will notice. Any time in Slade used to give a custom sky, midi, etc. is outside of your mapping time. I would recommend spending some time looking over the texture pack before you begin mapping, so that you don’t waste time scrolling. Once your time is up, if you haven’t beaten your map, please spend time to verify that your level is beatable. Bug fixing after your 4 hour and 20 minute time limit has passed is for fixing bugs, not adding new areas to your map. Your bug fixing phase should be spent balancing thing placement and fixing any potential gameplay errors, such as texture misalignment or soft locks. I’m generally okay with you sending me as many fixes as you make, as long as these fixes don’t overhaul any major sections of your map outside of culling/modifying monsters. You’re not supposed to be mapping after your time is up, you’re supposed to polish what you have. This time period is where I think you should add difficulty settings and add any fixes for co-op softlocks. There is no cap to how many maps you can submit to these events. Any bug fixing/map changes are due to me 1 week after I upload the final playthrough video of the last submission. For submissions, please post in this format: Map Name: [ X ]Author: [ X ]Music: [ Song + Author ]Sky: [ X ]Format: [ X ]Difficulty Settings: [ X ]Build Time: [ X ]Comments: Include here a short description of what your map is all about really. I'll (probably) be creating short map descriptions for each map for release at the end of the month, so this will help me. Screenshots: I only need the .wad file of your map. Compiling your submission with the resources is unnecessary for this event. Death Bear Posted April 5, 2022 Thanks, @Peccatum Mihzamiz! That was fun. Definitely not meant to be a “hard” map overall. Gonna think through some of those potential revisions. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Peccatum Mihzamiz Posted April 13, 2022 'Test Chamber' version 2. Thank you @Pistoolkip, @Death Bear and @Napsalm for testing and feedback! Changelog: added some archvile stuff, some progression hints and fixed lots of tiny details. Added difficulty settings and an exit to the (as of now unmade) secret map. Screenshots: Reveal hidden contents Map file link I messed up my recording so there's no point in re-recording, cause it won't be a blind run anymore. - The visuals are amazing - I like going 'out of bounds' and exploring the areas behind the scenes. Great to see broken equipment, plants growing, etc. - Grabbing the RL unleashes a ton of imps... making it a very challenging fight if you missed the SSG (and SG) somehow - Progressing was unclear. I spend 9 minutes looking how to progress, and finally discovering that those fire-things are portals. Make them look more like portals! - The buttons activating the Cyberdemons (and extra revenants) was interesting. The fight was kind of weird. You get a BFG and a ton of ammo, but the cluttered terrain / instant death pits / zombieman fodder makes it difficult to dodge Cyberdemon rockets. Still, the fight isn't overly challenging, just a little annoying The music suits the atmosphere well. Hope this helps! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Blip Posted April 20, 2022 Ok just played the three submissions: Crashing Clyde's Castle: Cool map, it's simple but you can easily die at the end due to the cramped space if you are not careful. Could easily be a map01. Test Chamber: I enjoyed the portal mechanic and puzzles involved, though I had to play it two times because I missed the portal hint at the start and I broke the map by jumping :p. Couldn't figure out how to access the secret exit. Spoiler I did shoot a switch that required freelook, but it seems to be an easter egg rather than something required for the secret exit. The laser traps were cool but the instakill floors seemed kind of unnecessary in this map, as I never seemed to fall accidentally on them. Maybe they should be moved to some other location where it could make a fight trickier. The Arcade is a Lie: Pretty nice secret level, I enjoyed the final fight because it makes you watch your step, and the zombiemen shooting can make you eat a stray rocket from the cybers. However, the fight could be more dangerous as the cybers can be dealt with pretty quickly, leaving you with tons of bfg and a bunch of zombiemen standing around. Didn't seem to find any gamebreaking or visual glitches, but as I said I missed the secret exit in Test Chamber so I can't be 100% sure. I did mostly enjoy the mechanic in all three maps, it reminds me of skulldash, though I find that the Bonus doors in "Test" and "Arcade" are bit too late for them to matter unless you are kind of speedrunning the map and triggering everything all at once. All around, pretty interesting maps, can't wait to see new submissions! 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

JustAthel Posted May 4, 2022 I realized too late this could have been used to make something seriously "Dark Deception"-ish, ahh well. It looks like a neat concept and some of the maps look pretty interesting to play, I'll have to look through and see what someone of you guys did. (The aesthetic of @Steve88's map above particularly intrigues me!) I see now this isn't as limiting as I felt it was at first. I'm assuming these only run for one month before the next one starts up? 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
