a wad that you have created that you despise

What is a wad/mod that you made that you are not proud of or just flat out despise not counting debut wads. I'll start EXTRA CRISPY, BLOODSEA and RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE i hate due to being boring wads that makes me wonder why i uploaded them in the first place.

i've made maps before that really suck compared to what my skill is currently but i don't think there's any reason to be ashamed even if something is objectively terrible. i can only think of 2 places where this is coming from

#1 you feel guilty for subjecting others to your bad wad, but unless someone is forced at gunpoint to play your terrible wads, then they only have themselves to blame. #2 you think it reflects poorly upon you-- but they are an inevitable consequence of experimenting & becoming experienced. i think they are a cool thing to look back on & compare to how you're doing now, seeing how far you've come. i'd say it's courageous & character-building to display it & allow the public to awe at how terrible it is like a dead rat being dissected by students

I’m sure somewhere on one of my old harddrives is a very early 2000s wad that’s a horrifying amalgamation of different weapon sprites and sound effects. From what I can remember:

-It uses the Hacx pistol

-Some double barrel from a Counterstrike/Half Life 1 mod, pre-Source

-Either the Serious Sam or SiN shotgun

-Blood 2’s dual uzis

-Plasma rifle shooting orange instead of blue

-Other clashing sprites I can’t remember right now

I think the base gameplay mod I customized was a Zdoom version of Immoral Conduct or something similar. I was a silly kid back then but I was at least not silly enough to upload it anywhere. I’m not sure if I “despise” it but I would be horrifyingly embarrassed if someone found it.

I don’t despise any of my own creations. Sure, some are better than others, but they are all important on the journey to learning more and improving as a mapper.

This.

I don't really dislike my creations - sure they could be better, but each one helped me to reach level where I stay now. I treat each old and new map as learning experience. Compared now and few years ago, it's like night and day. At other hand - it's okay to feel that your level doesn't live up your expectations, no craft is really perfect one. Just apply your new knowledge on new level and keep working on it.

To be perfectly honest I'm not proud of any of my work. That's why I've never released any of them. They will just end up getting deleted or sit incomplete and forgotten about lol.

This. I don't hate anything I made, because making maps is fun. Why would I hate something that was fun to do?

I've made stupid stuff, broken stuff, stuff I've abandoned and stuff that will never see the light of day, and I don't dislike any of it because it was all enjoyable to make.

If you're critiquing the time spent mapping on some retrospective rating of quality, you're doing it wrong. If it was fun to do at the time then it was worth it, regardless of how some future version of you would judge it.

I've regret making certain decisions in some of my maps. But I have never made a wad I dislike myself, some I think are pretty weak though. But it's all part of the learning experience, you gotta start somewhere.

Absolutely this! When a few of the Doom community played through my maps in October last year, I had a few facepalm moments when I realised my map making procedures and styles fluffed the natural progression of my maps, which frustrated both myself and the players themselves.

Learning from these mistakes can hopefully produce better maps in the near future.

I would have to say my very first wad i've ever made which is Underground Toxicity (which is gone now). But I will say that it was my first wad i've made and after that i've gotten better at mapping

Maps that I never finished. :(

This unironically

I am sitting on maps that I started almost 12 years ago, never formally released because I have a vision for a whole 13 map set, and, well, three of those maps are still unfinished and I’m not sure one of them can really be made good. Plus I’ve committed myself to drawing sprites for three boss enemies while having to face the fact that Doom-style sprites are not something I have a talent for. I don’t want to just throw in the towel and release what I’ve done but I also hate that it’s taken me so long to finish what isn’t really that ambitious of a project in the grand scheme of things, and having these reminders of my inability to finish things sitting around for so long makes me like them less and less. They’ll never be worth the wait at this point.

As far as finished maps, I don’t hate anything I’ve made. Some of the maps I’ve done are bad, sure, but @Horus got it right, they’re all part of the journey. Plus some of the disappointing maps I’ve done have turned into some of my favorites with a little bit of re-engineering.

getting reviewed by people who expect a coherent two hour level out of me is the worst

Unlike most, I do have an actual answer.

My DIY map. Had it removed from the project. An ungodly piece of crap even by a beginner's standards.

I partially despise The Invasion for the sprite work I did in it.  It was 26 years ago, and all I had was MS Paint, but I don't like it.  The version of Invasion that's on my hard drive has none of the new enemies in it.  It's just the 36 levels/textures/music.

I'm not happy with either of my Baron Door entries but I can't say I despise them. They were made in a very short amount of time, and when I was low on inspiration. But you know what, every time I complete the cycle of making and releasing a map, I grow a bit as an artist. Even if I don't find the resulting map satisfactory. Getting stuff done is more important than making it perfect. I don't know about you but I look back at my very first map with fondness.

That's a really good point!

Btw some wads that aren't that great for me (but nothing that i found despicable) are some shitpost maps i made in my early years of mapping during 2008/9 and some other maps, like:

Morbid Scream - not that bad thematically, but is a freaking nightmare both in layout and gameplay department. It's bad.

R. I. P. Pietro Taricone - An awful shitpost wad that doesn't even have the balls to fully goes into the black cringelord comedy style of awaited exception for this type of works. Shame on me!

Rabbit Doom - Very raw jokewad, the Daisy sprites are bad, but it's a "So Bad it's Good" type of charming bad.

I can't say that I hate any of my older works, mostly because they were all stepping stones to help me reach betterment; plus, I've never released anything due to me wanting come out swinging and give people a real good experience.

NULL: Face to Face was my one attempt at making a "serious", non-jokey, not-some-weird-arcade-thing Doom project. It coincided with a lot of things going wrong everywhere in my life and I hit the creative brick wall at a nigh-fatal speed. It is very unlikely that there will ever be a second attempt.

At least I was able to salvage it for parts for other, less-unfortunate things.

I think some of them are sorta crappy, but I really don't despise anything I've made - or any wad I can think of, really.. So long as I had a decently fun time making the wad, it served its purpose. Anything beyond that is a bonus.

Aw, I think they look alright, especially considering their age.

I DESPISE my map for Boss Battle Bonanza, Run and Hide.

It was my first ever speedmap so I didnt know how to allocate my time correctly. The first few areas are fine, but the final area is so rushed.

Combined with a lack of detail because of my general inexperience, it makes it worse.

Lesson here is.  Play the remake in Trick and Tear 2

Thanks.  I can be kind of hard on myself when it comes to my creative endeavors.  For instance, my debut wad, PSFDoom, I felt was so bad that I deleted it after I finished Vengeance, which improved it.  I even had Ty delete it from the idgames archive.  I wish I hadn't don't that, as I can't find it anywhere now.

About 10 years ago I've created a simple stupid wad which I've uploaded somewhere...but the funny thing I don't remember the name of the wad and where's exactly I've uploaded it.

In nutshell, it was an edited "Oblige generated" city map (rooftops, actually), and I've used some 3D zombie models (taken from another mod) and changed weapons to the new from realm667. And the music was "Hollywood Holocaust" track from DN3D.

Since I've literally lost this wad I'm kinda calm, because it's not possible to find it, I think.

Spacescrap.wad

Aka My buggy as fuck ramp 2 map, it's half-baked, I lazily just added an exit to it when it was clearly unfinished and there's a ton of visual fucks (mostly textures) and the yellow skull is a required secret, its door doesn't have any key markings, there's a switch that does fuck-if-I-know and the combat is pretty dull.

Ofc I can make it better.
