John Wheel memorial [now at /idgames]

Yesterday, a friend of mine died due to cancer. I hoped he would have a little more time, but it couldn't be.
He, like me, was a Doom enthusiast for many years. Whenever I made a map, he tested it, so I will notice his absence for all the maps that in the future he will not be able to play and of which I will never know his opinion.

Today I made this little map in his memory.



Name: John.wad
Format: Doom: Doom2 (Doom format)
Tested in Crispy Doom, PrBoom, DSDA, Woof, Zandronum and GzDoom.
Doesn't make use of any advance feature.
You can freelook, jump or crouch if you want.

Skills: UV and HMP are implemented. (Warning : UV its deceptively difficult). The easy difficulty doesn't have any monster, just in case someone wants to enter and see the map calmly.
It has some textures and sprites made by me, and some textures borrowed of Alien Vendetta (John was a big fan of AV) as well the music.

Bonus track: I made a deatchmatch version of the map and setup a Zandronum server in TSPG, so it's online right now and will be indefinitely.

Damn... I'm really sorry. I knew him too, even though we hadn't interacted a lot in recent years. It's heartbreaking to get these news now. He will be missed.

As for the map, it's a really nice small map, definitely focused on the architecture of the memorial. Some surprises await this little map though for the unprepared.

I dont know when i will be able to play this map but I am absolutely going to. My condolenses to everyone who knew and loved the man. I feel this is a great idea for a tribute and would like to do my small part to contribute by playing the map in his honor. Thank you very much and you know what... I often say that I can tell what a player is thinking just by looking at their gameplay. In this case, I can also feel it. Thanks you too Fadri.

I did not know John, but this is a really elegant, understated and tasteful way to pay tribute to somebody. His memory will live forever now though, in this little world you created. I'd be lying if I said I'm not moved at the sight of it, even as a stranger. I'm sorry for your loss.

I've now played through, and I have to say this is beautiful, Rata. I can see the visual and even combat style of Alien Vendetta shine through. Even though I didn't know him, this was really touching. The mournful midi (one of my favorites used in AV) was also an excellent touch. An elegant map, may John rest in peace.

Take my condolences, I just played on the TSPG server and searched up the name. That is a really nice way of tribute to your friend and even tho i didn't know him, I'm sure he would've loved this map. Great work man.
