What were the first Pwads you've ever played amd completed?

Recommended Posts

For me it was Skillsaws Valiant. Although it was superseeded in popularity by Abcient Aliens it still remains to this day my favorite megawad.

It had a perfect blend of diverse locales, new enemies which spiced up the formula an excelent music.

@skillsaw this still remains one of your best works to date, Ancient Aliens or not.

The Bitchin Levels

As a then-newcomer to Doom online and the internet in general I was daunted by the sight of the old cdrom.com archive, an FTP directory of nothing but thousands of filenames. But the Yahoo web directory (or maybe dmoz.org, I forget) linked to this fellow's website he had made for his mapset, which made it stand out.

The wad is not bad but the sound effects grate after a while. I'll be happy to never hear "it is a good day to die, but the day is not yet over" again.

Edit: I knew I had posted this story before. Previous thread: What was the first pwad you ever played?

My memory is fuzzy.

I can remember that Pirate Doom, Memento Mori I & II and BTSX E1 were among my earliest ones, but I don't know the exact order. The first one was most likely Pirate Doom, which remains my favorite TC, and one of my favorite WADs in general.

Edit: If my memory is serving me right, then Scythe was also one of the earliest ones I played, but I didn't complete it until some time later because I had mental breakdowns over MAP24 (which is hilarious in hindsight seeing how easy it is).

This one I remember very vividly: https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/themes/starwars/starwar2

I don't even like Star Wars, but I saw this wad during Vargskelethor Joel's Doom competitions and thought "Made with actual blueprints as the reference? I wanna see". I played this one on GZDoom with texture smearing filtering. Man, I really didn't know any better during that time.

Strictly speaking, the first ever pwad I completed was the Master Levels. But that's like saying you've lost your virginity to leather couch - you wouldn't admit that shit even if you were tortured at Guantánamo Bay.

First WAD I played was Reolwolf.wad a 9 map Wolfenstein themed episode. Second one was Squardron 417.

I can't say for certain what was the first pwad I ever played, but the first I can clearly remember is Castle of The Renegades by Scott F. Crank, which I played sometime around December of '95, and shortly afterwords, I played The Doom 2 version. It was kind of a thing back then to take a map you'd just released for Doom and update it to Doom 2, and IIRC, Scott did a fine job of it. He's probably more famous for his trick-map The Waterfront, which featured intentional use of the Archvile Bug. I remember freaking out the first time I played it when Spectres ran through walls and I couldn't stop them from killing me, no matter how much buckshot I pumped into them. Oh, such larks! :)

First I played?

Nazi Auferstehung

First completed?

Nazi Auferstehung

Favourite of all time?

Certainly not Nazi Auferste-hungmyfuckingself

Quite possibly the worst start to the scene, miserable, maddening and lazy, vivid memories of aimlessly marching down SLIDGE produced rectal tracks made to vaguely resemble corridors with poorly aligned swastikas half cut off by the sector height as clashing artsyles battled for supremacy of who stuck out the sorest, wonderful days wish I could live them again.

Followed it up with Aliens TC though so you can thank that for single handedly recovering my interest, leading eventually to my career as the 15th best mid as fuck TNT mapper (it's a real cutthroat competitive scene).

Memento Mori, because I had read that it came out before Final Doom.

And then Maximum Doom, I can't remember the name of the very first one I loaded up (but I remember it had a Pain Elemental in the starting room), but one of the first was called WAYCOOL.wad.  I picked it because it said it was way cool.  It was not.  It was not cool at all.

That kind of set the tone for me.

the usual alien vendetta, null space, scythe, doom city, wow.wad, very early ones (like origwad, stones.wad, 23castle), deus vult, earth.wad, doomsday of uac, strain, kama sutra, hell revealed, requiem, eternal doom, nuts, grove (this one and requiem are my favorite of the bunch) also master levels for doom 2 and final doom if that counts

after playing those i didn't play any more wads for many years until the beginning of this year when i played my house and doom the way we remember it because a friend shared them and then i've been playing a lot of them for the past few months, i'm glad because doom is one of my favorite games so it was bound to happen at some point in my life

I guess the first pwad I ever played was Aliens TC way back, although I definitely didn't know enough about this stuff then to understand that's what it was.  I always thought it was a completely different game until years later when I returned to Doom and really dug into what wads actually were.

First pwad I completed I think was Double Impact, although I played it as part of Freedoom, which is technically an iwad!

Not counting Wolfendoom (the reason I really got into custom maps in the first place because I went to Doomworld round the end of 2007 to see how to play the fucking things!) it would be the then recently-released Yomi

First Pwads I played and beaten was back in 2003/2004 when I was 16 years old, and they were Memento Mori (cause I found the Casalis designed a few maps for it), Hell Revealed (cause I read Andy Olivera's review how it takes after Plutonia), Requiem, and Icarus: Alien Vanguard, but I played them on Hey, Not Too Rough, and with God mode on. I still enjoy playing through them to this day, and now I can beat them on Ultra-Violence without God mode, though I play HR on Hurt Me Plenty, since it is pretty tough on Ultra-Violence, and even Plutonia gives me trouble on that difficulty.

Pretty sure the first i attempted was Kama Sutra but soon discovered it was too difficult.  One that i stayed with and finished first was Serenity.

I was about to say it was Valiant, which I played co-op with my brother in 2020. However, I now remember I completed my first pwad probably about 9 years ago, it was called Town Infection, I think. I remember playing on Skulltag at the time, being the only source port I knew back then. I must say I remember nothing from it though, but I do know I played it every single day trying to complete it until I eventually did.

I think I tried Plutonia after that and eventually stopped playing Doom until the pandemic, which was when the nostalgia hit. Been playing since then and had great times both with my brother and by myself.

I played a ton of stuff from the Deathday CD and the Demon Gate CD.  I didn't have internet when I started playing Doom.  I also played stuff that my dad created.  He & I use to make levels and then share them with eachother.

I guess technically the Master Levels and a smattering of the Maximum levels were my first exposure to custom WADs. Besides that though, the list of PWADs I've played is very short - Eviltech, Plutonia 2, Knee Deep in ZDoom, Mock 2, and a small bit of Psychophobia were pretty much all I'd touched before I joined Doomworld, and honestly since then the list hasn't really grown.
