What are you playing now?

Not 20 minutes ago, I just finished Heartland.  So I guess you could say that I currently don't have one.  I recently downloaded Dimensions and was thinking about giving that a go.

I started replaying No Rest for the Living back in December, but stopped Dooming for a few months. Then they go and release a MIDI pack for it, so I had to pick it up again at Vivisection. The MIDI ("Unbearable Torture") fit so perfectly, I had to pull up the soundtrack and double-check it wasn't the official song! (I also might have to go back and play the secret map again just to hear "Mountain Slayer's of the Eagle's Thunder" in-game because damn that songs absolutely slaps.)

Right now I'm alternating between Doom 2 in Spain Only (played up to map 16), and Going Down (played up to map 7). I'm having a lot of fun with both of them. It was strange discovering that Mouldy, the creator of Going Down, was Cyriak, who's videos I've been watching since long before I knew anything about the Doom modding community.

Started playing Phobos-Relive the Nightmare by Shams Young and made it to map03 before dieing to a hell knight that got too close.   So far I'm enjoying this; it has a nice Knee Deep vibe and isn't terribly hard.   I'm enjoying how it starts off where the previous map ended and it has a high fun factor so far.

So I finished the mapset tonight and it's a lot of fun though maps  6 abd 7 weren't fun from a pistol start for me (I was playing continuous unless I died then pistol start).  I really liked the last two maps and the first 5 maps.   I'd give it a solid 4 stars overall.

I'm finally playing TNT.  Never played Final Doom, and it seems to be getting a lot of attention lately, so I'm doing it now.  Better late than never, I suppose.

It actually started out really strong, but it's become a bit of a slog toward the end.  Lots of enormous maps, backtracking through empty areas, wallhumping desperately trying to make progress... but every time I start thinking about giving up, a really great map comes along with Imps in cubicles sitting at their computer desks, or a truck delivering a shipment of Cacodemons, and it pulls me right back in.

I decided to continue my travels through Compendium. I can't remember if I previously mentioned Perdition's Gate not being very good and me dropping out at MAP18, but that happened. I've since played all of Dystopia 3, including the bonus level, and The Darkening Episode 1. Dystopia 3 felt kind of clever in places, with the trickery and Doomcute. It just wasn't much fun, though. Discovering it was only about 13 maps long was actually a welcome release, as I was probably going to drop out if it was a 32-map megaWAD. Nice ideas, a fun jab at Microsoft at the end and some clever stuff, but not much fun in practice.

The Darkening E1 was awesome, however. Really nice, clean maps, particularly by Jan Van der Veken, who got the lion's share of the mapping. I've started a save on E2 now as a follow-up, as I enjoyed E1 so much and E2 comes highly recommended.

Am on Odyssey of Noises in Plutonia. After that, I'll be playing through TNT.

So many people have mentioned Ancient Aliens that I'll play that after TNT.

It is very difficult. Look forward to it.

Damn, I might play Ancient Aliens next instead of TNT then. I love exploring, but not constantly backtracking and not knowing where to go next. Plutonia's Odyssey of Noises was like this, it's not quite as clever or epic as it wants to be, you're hitting switches (or missing them) and not knowing what activates what sometimes.

I'm also playing through Suspended in Dusk and reached map 3. To be honest, despite being an exploration map with some really thoughtful touches, gameplay wise I sort of switched off. Progress can be halting at times due to the layout; the map is well designed to represent a military base, but extremely bland to behold; the gameplay isn't really there for me.

Along with Doom Zero in the DWMegawad Club, yesterday i started Sign of Torment, which jumped to the top of my list after trying just one level.  i don't often play WADs that aren't vanilla, and i'm not sure i've ever played a WAD that uses Boom-features before.

Microslaughter Community Project - I love slaughtermaps, but am not a great Doom player so I tend to suck at them. It's been a great learning experience for me playing these succinct and punchy slaughtermaps, and it's a lot of fun. Currently on MAP05.

Akeldama - I've been enjoying this one a lot too. The maps look great and have mostly been a lot of fun. Currently trying to get through MAP31 UV saveless, which I've gotten very close to a few times but keep choking it away. The map itself is fantastic and memorable though.

Doom Zero - Playing through this one with the megawad club. Pretty nifty wad with generally old-school feeling combat with a lot of inventive level design. It has yet to blow me away really at any point but I've enjoyed the experience.

I beat Go 2 It on Ultra Violence from a pistol start! Enjoyed almost every minute of the map. The Cybers in the corridors were a bit much, other than that it was damn near perfect.

Now I will finally be acceped by my peers!

:P

EDIT: And I finally beat the hardest map I've ever finished without cheating, HR map 14, City of Bullshittery! (Although I had to cheat to beat map 31, Descent into Bullshittery.)

Dieing to Bruised by Patrick Smith.    I'm not getting anywhere with it, but it's the kind of map that I find satisfying.   Think I'll have to play it on zdoom or something so I can savescum my way through it and develop a strategy for it  when I'm ready to play through it saveless.

Okay, so I've savescummed my way through this and I can see it becoming one of those maps that I breakout every year and try to beat it in one sitting.   The combat is mostly fair, there's a few illusionary walls hiding some nasty surprises that I didn't appreciate; but overall the level is excellent for its time.

I started to play Lost Civilization to kick mapping block and ease my mind, so far I love  how it feels and plays. It's so vast and expansive, giving that "last man on the earth" feel.

Arrival, Fragor Portum, Doom 64(believe it or not, this should be my first complete playthrough of the last one! I've made a few attempts over the years.)

I finished The Darkening Episode 2 last night. The first two maps are pretty rough, as they’re low on health and armour. I ended up replaying MAP01 knowing where me secret, missable armour was to get myself through it with a decent bit of health leftover so I could survive the hitscan onslaught of MAP02. After that it’s really good. Great Quake II flavoured tech bases with nice custom textures, nods at continuity and visual story telling and a comfortable difficulty on UV, with plenty of clever vanilla mapping tricks and an episode length that didn’t wear out it’s welcome. Very, very recommended. One or two of the non-secret important items seem to require SR50 or something else that I couldn’t readily do in GZDoom, but I survived anyway.

Been making my way through Mapwich 2 very slowly. My first child was just born so it's been like 2 months and I'm not even halfway through.

I love this collection of single maps a lot, gotta find more. Honestly makes me want to maybe map myself, but the prospect is very overwhelming.

A masochist in me finished MAP06 from Welcome to Hell by Paul Schmitz, with 100% kills and 100% secrets. (The WAD has 3 maps, 05-07, MAP07 suuuucks and MAP05 was cryptic but pretty good; I finished it 9 years ago).

The main problem for me was how to get to the "red" section (with a red arrow etc.). >20 minutes staring at Doom Builder, trying to play with -nomonsters, and I finally found a switch which you would think that would lower a lift, but no, it opened the passage.

The pitch dark parts in which you don't know where the floor is and where the chasm is didn't help.

This is a visually impressive (for 1995), vanilla-trickery-impressive map which is also pretty obnoxious (hello, teleporting chaingunners). I somewhat enjoyed the experience but it's a niche map for sure.

After my latest post decrying modern megaWADs and saying how I’m not super into Doom at the moment, I decided to check a few options out. So I played the first four levels of Insertion, which is in Compendium. Nothing special so far, and I suspect it’ll not excite me much, so I then had the idea to check out some of the favourites I keep talking about but don’t actually remember. Four levels into Khorus’ Speedy Shit and I appreciate the polish, but am finding the tight ammo a little draining, so...

I revisited Mini-level MegaWAD, which I played once years and years ago and loved. My “I’ll just check out a few maps” play through ended up being about 18 maps long! It’s not polished, and it’s hilariously cruel at points, but it’s like... jalapeño poppers or something. The maps are spicy, but moreish. Knowing the maps are short means I’m happy to keep coming back for another try, and the creativity of the setups and high speed of the general play has been great. Even the very obviously slaughter map secret levels haven’t dampened my enthusiasm. This will be the continuous play through I finish next for sure. Loving it!

Playing Struggle (saves, pistol start, hmp,) and thoroughly enjoying it. Only played a few megawads but probably the most fun one do far.
