  1. I found a whole load of old Doom stuff on my old computer that I hadnt released. Most of this dates back to ~1998. Anyway, I've made the decision to clean it up and release it.

    I am releasing:

    • stman.wad: Cute little graphics wad which changes the status bar face into a picture of the marine. There are two versions, stman.wad for multiplayer (the colour of the marine changes according to the player colour) and stman1.wad for single player (only green, but nicer graphics). Reviewed in NSC 229

    • fragglicution: I found alternate versions of the two levels i made for Execution. I have a version of "fast frag" before it was split in two, and a later version of "nihilist" which I forgot to send in for inclusion in the project. Thanks to Nick Baker for permission to include his textures. Reviewed in NSC 229

    • Newer version of Onslaunch . This was a DOS-based Doom launcher I wrote back in the mists of time. I have a version of this which I forgot to release. Status: In idgames. Doomworld doesn't show the new text file (bug in the idgames browser?)

    • LMPIT: DOS based demo editor. This is released with source, but the code is a bit embarassing :-) Status: In newstuff.

    • oloedit: For Onslaunch, I developed a system called "OLO" where you could include a "OLO" lump inside your WAD to specify the names of levels. When you loaded the WAD in Onslaunch, it would display the correct names of the levels. I think Decamatch 2 had an OLO lump in it. Also, SMMU recognises OLO lumps and uses the correct names. This is an editor for OLO lumps. Status: Not bothering to release this.

These are the levels I made for "execution", but different to the released versions. I discovered these when trawling through some old stuff on my hard drive. MAP01: Fast frag 98 This is the original version; the final version was split in half and made into two maps. MAP02: Nihilist I did some more work on this level and forgot to send it in. Oops! This is the final version I came up with. There are some bugs in these levels. They have not been changed since 1998 when I made them. There are a few texture misalignments.

Replaces the status bar face with a tiny picture of the Doom marine. MAN1.WAD is for single player Dooming, as the player being simply a scaled-down version of the sprite. MAN.WAD is more complex, and is designed for multi-player, as the player's uniform color changes to whatever color uniform yours is. STBAR.WAD is included to let your try out MAN.WAD single-player. It is in a seperate WAD, as otherwise it might mess up other peoples status bars. To use it, type doom2 -file man.wad stbar.wad

  5. The only thing I hate more than slam-door trains is people who dont realise that to close the door on slam-door trains you have to slam them!

The rail network recently changed their announcement system. Until a few weeks ago the computerised announcement system talked about itself in the first person, saying "I'm sorry..." in response to delayed trains for example. They've finally realised how ridiculous this is and switched over to the more sensible "We are sorry".

Internet mail provided by google. 1GB mail limit. It's still in beta at the moment so accounts are by invite only. It automatically scans your email and tailors adverts to it's content, if the email contains the word car you'll get Honda adverts etc.

I was sent 3 invites to my Hotmail account, only one got through so something odd is happening.

They probably banned it because it's competition; they view the invites as an intrusion. Free MSN Hotmail will be increased to 250 MB (or 2 GB under their paid service.)

  9. Fourth year Uni is a pain in the ass. I always said in the past that I hated exams and I'd prefer courses which were more coursework-based. Now I've had a chance to see the difference and I think I prefer the exam route.

I currently have four large courseworks due. Three of them are to be in May 7th (next friday). Here is my graphics coursework. Here is my IES (games) coursework. I think I've basically finished writing all the code I need to write now, which is kind of good. The bad side is that all of these require 5000 word reports. The fourth project (cryptography) is in May 14th (the following friday) and I've barely even looked at it yet.

On a happier note, I've successfully found myself a job which pays a decent salary, so I'm all sorted for next year.

  10. I just heard some sad news on talk radio - Horror/Sci Fi writer Stephen King was found dead in his Maine home this morning. There weren't any more details. I'm sure everyone on Doomworld will miss him - even if you didn't enjoy his work, there's no denying his contributions to popular culture. Truly an American icon.

  14. I wrote this writeup on the Doom rendering engine a few days ago, it details how all the various parts of the rendering engine work together.

Writing it was actually an educational experience. I had to read through the source to clarify several things which I didnt understand and I've ended up understanding it better than I ever did before.

Anyway, I hope people find it informative and perhaps helpful. There only seem to be a few people that I've heard of who totally understand how everything works in the Doom engine.

Well, technically we're both right. My writeup is supposed to be a fairly high level description of the engine, so describing visplanes as built from of vertical strips seems a better point of view. I'll certainly add a note in about it though.

    Freedoom Update

Fraggle here with the weekly FreeDoom update. Unfortunately, not much has been contributed this week. Over the past week or so the number of submissions has quite considerably dropped. I know for a fact that several people are working on sprites and levels, so I'm hopeful that progress will pick up soon. However, I feel I ought to say, we are incredibly close to finishing the textures. If you can make textures at all and you have any spare time, please consider making a few textures to contribute. Every submission is useful :) Among the submissions we have had this week are: some more musics from Scragadelic and Julian, and a work in progress replacement for Map12 from MDenham. Saint of Killers submitted some fixed versions of his player sprite, and Edd submitted some powerup and trooper sounds. You can view all the submissions in the deutex tree. More FreeDoom next week.

    Freedoom Update

Fraggle here with the weekly FreeDoom update. This week has been fairly quiet, but there have been several texture submissions, including some new crate textures from Fredrik and also quite a few textures from Espi. Our wall patches status now stands at 87.6%, and there was some discussion in the FreeDoom forum about how to organise finalising the textures once we have replacements for all the textures. We aim to release a texture wad containing all the FreeDoom textures, which will all be available for authors to reuse in their own wads as they wish. On the sprites front, Fredrik submitted a replacement for the shotgun. We have had 2 shotguns already submitted but the feedback on them was not very positive. This third shotgun has met with much better feedback. As always, be sure to check out the latest wad! More FreeDoom next week.

    Freedoom Update

Welcome again to the weekly FreeDoom update. Unfortunately I forgot to write last weeks update in the wake of the tragedy in America, so this report will cover the last two weeks work. People have been fairly busy: there have been textures submitted from cph, Espi, AirRaid, Destruct (Jon_R), Isle, and KMan. The status of the wall patches is now just under 85%: it seems that it will not be long before we have a complete set of replacement textures! Of particular interest is this work in progress graphic of the final boss, which Deathmaster213 has been working on. The graphic is not yet completely finished, but it is hoped that it will soon join the rest of the textures. We have had several sprites submitted over the past 2 weeks: Saint of Killers submitted this slug-like demon which is a replacement for the mancubus, and also a replacement for the player sprite. Nightfang also contributed his replacements for the Cacodemon and the imp. We have several clearly very talented artists working on the FreeDoom sprites now, but we are still in need of more to help out. If you can draw and can spare some time to help out with the FreeDoom sprites, please get in contact :). Other sprite related news includes Fredriks replacement for the plasma rifle (featured in the slug screenshot above), and various other small sprites from Isle and geekmarine. Several completed maps have been submitted in the past two weeks: Map05 and Map29 from Amarande and Map30 from Cacodemon_Leader. Jon Dowland has kindly hacked together a script which lets you view the maps through your web browser: you can find this on the status page. Levels are available to test from the FreeDoom site in the freedoom_levels.wad file. Be sure to check out the latest FreeDoom wad. More FreeDoom next week!
