Can anyone recommend hardware for dumping roms from N64 cartridges?
SiFi270 replied to SiFi270's topic in Everything Else
Hello again. Today I was lucky enough to find a copy of the Jaguar version of Doom. Unfortunately, that's one of the few systems the Sanni doesn't support. When I tried searching for something else that could do the job, none of the results seemed relevant and/or up to date. Maybe it's something beyond my price/experience range. That's kind of the impression I currently have. @Quasar Do you have any advice? -
Now I'm not sure when this was added or removed, but at one point E2M1 in FreeDoom Phase 1 had a structure with some harmless little slopes that were only visible in ZDoom family ports.

I once tried to go through UD with minimum secrets but maximum kills and items. I gave up after E1M2 because I spent too much time just waiting in the red key area for the shotgunners outside to walk somewhere shootable. Of course, I've got no one to blame but myself for writing the rules the way I did and not actually thinking it through.

John Carmack is the only person who knows how to make games even have the illusion of 3D. Whenever someone else wants to make a 3D game, they have to ask him nicely for a few strings of code.

I've manged to find my answers elsewhere. This thread can be safely closed and ignored.

Thank you both very much. I've arranged to get an email notification if/when the JoeyN64's available again, and if I ever start to have doubts about it, I'll think more seriously about getting a pre-built Sanni. -
Can anyone recommend hardware for dumping roms from N64 cartridges?

I'm willing to spend tens of British dollars, I have no experience with soldering, and I think a preference would require me to have experience with any other aspect of this, which I don't. -
I got a NES mini pre-owned but it's full of custom additions like ROMs for other systems and dumb meme pictures. I do not want these, and they were still intact after I selected "factory reset" from the options menu. Connecting it to my computer via USB doesn't let me look through the files or anything. Is there anything I can do without disassembly or additional hardware?

Has anyone re-released Carnage Galore 2 for source ports?
SiFi270 replied to printz's topic in WAD Discussion
In Chocolate (and Crispy) Heretic, you just load patches like that by adding "-deh ichor.hhe -hhever 1.2" to the command line. You can also get an executable for Heretic 1.2 here, which may not be the most legal-est thing but I'm pretty sure without an IWAD included it's very much in the "no one will/should make a fuss" kind of wiggle room. -
@Grungo This HAS to be your fault. You're the only one here capable of doing any kind of damage to the spacetime continuum.

The only thing I remember from her physical description is short hair, so yeah, it checks out as far as I'm concerned.

Things about non-Doom video games you just found out
SiFi270 replied to Individualised's topic in Everything Else
One of the Steam Points Shop items for Shadow Warrior Classic Redux is a background based on the cancelled Deadly Kiss expansion from Simply Silly Software. Maybe at one point they were hoping it was complete enough to include, or at least close enough to that state that just a bit more needed to be added. Also not directly about a video game but today I saw both models of the Atari Lynx. I thought they'd be much smaller based on the pitiful screen resolution, but apparently they're about the size of a loaf of bread. -

I checked all four games in WDC and the one in Apocalypse sounds the same as the others. -
[Nvm I'm stupid lol] "Canonical" Version of No Rest for the Living?
SiFi270 replied to OpenRift's topic in Doom General
This reminds me of how the achievement names in the XBLA version of Doom 2 imply a "story" for No Rest that just doesn't hold up for a moment. Beating the main game gets you an achievement called "From Earth to Hell..." which is accurate enough, but then the one for No Rest is called "...And Back Again," which suggests it's about Doomguy going home after beating the Icon of Sin. Except the first level is clearly called "The Earth Base," and it follows the usual "more hellish the deeper you go" kind of progression even before sponge corrected the skies in later versions. wooo pedantry -

I'm not sure to this day what actually happened, and I don't suppose I ever will be, but one of the first times I ever seriously played Doom, it was the GBA version in an emulator, and when I encountered my very first cacodemon, something seemed to go wrong with my controls for a few seconds, and at the time I figured "so that's why the cacodemon is so legendary. It has an infamous attack where I guess it paralyzes the player with fear or something." I also somehow thought the berserk affected the damage of every weapon, despite most if not all of what I knew about it coming from the comic where the marine clearly favors his fists while it's active. Every time it automatically switched me to the fist, I'd switch back, because I wanted to do enhanced damage with a more practical weapon.

I do mean just vanilla EX. I was playing the levels I mentioned before there seemed to be any hope of an official re-release.

EX had the nightmare flag too. I remember seeing it in recreations of some Absolution levels.

I found a potential softlock in map04. More specifically, in the northeastern room with the megasphere.

The DWmegawad Club plays: 10x10, Heartland, Sigil II
SiFi270 replied to dobu gabu maru's topic in WAD Discussion
Map07: The Beating Heart Speaking of modern Romero maps, I remember someone saying after E1M8b was released that it worked better as a standalone map than a conclusion to E1, because playing E1M7 and E1M8b back to back would be exhausting. While I already got what they were saying at the time, playing maps 5 to 7 of Heartland made me understand that point better than ever. -

Map01: Subvay Sandvich When the suicide bombers are introduced, it's obvious they should be prioritized, but their visual similarity to shotgunners they happen to be in groups with makes that hard to do, and that's pretty mean but I'm not sure if that's a deliberate part of the difficulty or not. -
Trying to Make Sense of Doom 2's Maps - An Interpretation
SiFi270 replied to GermanPeter's topic in Doom General
I want to send this video back in time to Dafydd ab Hugh and Brad Linaweaver. The first Doom book had plenty of "oh, they mean this exact location in the original game!" moments, but they were ditched in the sequel. The closest they get is including the cyber/spider fight from Map20, which now, ironically enough considering your interpretation of the start of this adventure, happens on a train. Of course, I'd also make sure to send them clearer pictures of revenants. Stuff like sprites from the neural upscale pack, or maybe even screenshots of their modern counterparts? -
