Map 06: Last Call by John Bishop Crispy Doom, UV, pistol-start More thematically coherent than the last map, this one takes place in an underground power station, as evidenced by the many visible whirring machines in certain rooms and the brown tunnels linking everything. What's more, traps in this map feel exactly on point, even if combat is mostly corridor-crawling, as evidenced by the closing shotgunner ambush on the right. Or the little moment where Cacodemon and a Mancubus emerge from a tunnel opened when returning from that one room. Meaning the one with the Baron on the wall that I suppose describes the hideous experiments in which more soldiers are being bred for Hell's army. Though this facility is small enough, we can probably assume that work in that area is minimal. Surprisingly, we were able to access every single secret because doors, let alone secrets, aren't actually marked all that well. In some ways, this isn't too much different from some of John's later work. And it's certainly more enjoyable than some crap like Shrike 2 that was only released to /idgames in 2012. PS - I forgot to comment of the theft of the name of TNT's last map which...seems a little weird for a number of reasons. -

Since no one has posted yet, I'll just continue ASS for now Map 07: Oh great, more damn barrels. Well, at least they're clumped in groups and not encompassing the whole playable area. Oh, if you're looking for the blue key, it's inside one of the blood fountains Map 08: Oh boy, it's an Obsidian map and the first time I noticed the brown Plutonian brick that probably appeared in some capacity in many previous maps but which is something that I completely failed to notice for some reason. Anyway, it's still pretty cool despite the lack of scrolling floors. In the immediately visible room at the start, you can blow the barrels up but head down and more barrels appear, along with enemies! The progression manages to be quite odd and thanks to an instant berserk pack, is not terribly difficult to save ammo for. Of course, we also get tons of shells, which seems to be in part for the Cyber for the exit and um, it's balanced a little more fairly than the average Obsidian map Map 09: An_Mutt was responsible for the only map so far that can be called essentially Plutonian in form, though not so much the combat sense. This just isn't as vise-like, and the random Arch-vile pair in one window at the end of one hallway with chaingunner pairs in alcoves feels more clumsily meme-y than not. But the midi choice helps this to rise above practically all of the other maps except maybe Jimmy's. Map 10: 4shockblast's....first map? Basically, the room's packed with barrels but shoot in the right spots to get them out of the way, run past a room with Arch-viles on the side in order to avoid going up, then upon escaping some barrels, punching some Arch-viles in a maze, then coming into a large closing room with a Cyberdemon and the need to fire a BFG once to open some closets on the sides with switches and groups of SS. A voodoo doll is then revealed where it's then required to shoot a rocket at to kill yourself and a Romero head to end the map. Nice improvement! -

Map 05: Skybase by Chris Harbin Crispy Doom, UV, pistol start A map that's....probably not a whole lot better than the previous ones, but more expansive, although this also comes with lots and lots of backtracking. And other than the windows, there's few clues as to the map's name. Starting in a darkened warehouse and transitioning between the different wings through hallways of SHAWN, there's also some darkened experimental labs with a series of consoles arranged in a semi-circle near the yellow key, an underground tunnel that's ice for no discernable reason, one particular power room leading to yet another underground section with green storage, then finally, a room with large red power collectors close to the exit. Combat-wise, despite the presence of a Requiem-era Mark Klem track, there isn't too much happening here and the stuff encountered whilst backtracking is hardly more substantive than the ambushes in typical custom wads which also featured backtracking. Although at the same time, this is just small enough that it doesn't really take lots of time. Still, despite an undoubtedly cool and more abstract presentation, not to mention a fairly respectable if modest Cacodemon ambush in the computer bank blue key roo, to say nothing of a Baron ambush at the rocket launcher's location, it's just fine. -

Some thoughts on Korp's maps. The few things I've played from him before were speedmapp-ish and ok but imo did not stand out so much. Combat in his two maps has a fair degree of thought put into them. Map 03 specifically does a good job marrying verdant beauty with a dark environment. And while it hadn't had difficulty settings applied when I first played it, Map 05 should satisfy people who like Speed of Doom-style combat, though they shouldn't expect NoReason-style all combat all the time. Not to mention the latter has one of Korp's finest compositions.

Two things. Finished a crappy map i believe was submitted to decino called xxl.wad or something, then finally I'll be starting both the first Trick and Tear and No End in Sight Episode 3. The latter is strange because I'm not 100 percent certain of why it's so highly regarded quite yet but I have seen a few hints of something more complex at least!

Abyssal Speedmapping Sessions #15 (2015) by Various (DSDA Doom) I am literally going to have to put the next one to the side if I get yet another one of these in a three-week period. Also, why does it use Plutonia when hardly any of its visual themes can be spotted at a quick glance in the first 4 maps at least? Who knows! Without further ado... Map 01- Less Books Than You Need: An ammo-starved map that feels like it doesn't quite know what it wants to be. I suppose the bit where we're surrounded at the end is kind of nice Map 02 - This one's by Pinchy and like his other mapping efforts, this does not disappoint in the slightest! Smart enemy placement, conservative and highly tasteful use of textures and a good sense of encounter design, it's probably the best thing in the maps played today Map 03 - I can't say I remember this one too well, but there's some creative use of shapes here and some occasional fierceness Map 04 - This one on the other hand is just....not so well optimized. much as I can appreciate a derivative pincer opening trap, the rest is basically forgettable. Map 05 - By Jimmy. Better than his Jenesis maps, excelllent looking with the only real flaw being the lack of ammo being put down. Leaning on infighting is a must. A very lovely showcase of Viridian incidentally. Ironically, this is one of the maps where no Plutonia seems to have been used! Pretty nice flow and escalation of encounters however. Map 06: I dunno how to navigate this barrel maze and tbh, it's pretty bad. I don't mind skipping this. Like are we suppose to get an Imp to set off a chain reaction and somehow be in the exact right side to be pushed into a berserk pack sitting in the middle? This will be continued. -

Map 04: The Arrival by Chris Harbin Crispy Doom, UV, pistol-start Another short map, this one probably feels less substantive than the last one, with the exception of a higher enemy density per square footage. The Super Shotgun secret was located essentially through instinct, although a scrolling window in that room opens when returning from a particular key. The title seemingly rips from Charlie Sheen's best movie as it certainly fits the theme of a lab with aliens, though not academically. I don't really understand why we start in a vehicle given the last map's continuity but this makes plenty of sense otherwise. Highlight include the map listing other sections of the facility, like the one we're in right now and naturally, the labs where it seems as if there are zombie experiements of sorts from the sergeant pictures stapled here. It's only one room but it leaves a greater impact than anything else in the map. Though one more thing: spare shells are pretty spare so maybe have the regular shotgun out half the time. -

[-cl9] blue map for a belated birthday
LadyMistDragon replied to bsharp's topic in WAD Releases & Development
This was great! It took forever to find the rocket launcher switch considering the seriously heavy fire (slaughter-number Imps by the switch? really?) but this was thankfully not just a slaughter map, even if it was difficult enough to match! Maybe things weren't quite smooth-sailing after that (still lots of Arch-viles!) but at least things didn't seem quite so grindy. PS. Sorry about the lack of video but visually speaking, it's very polished! Kind of feels like a Cannonball map tbh.
