  1. A man needs a purpose. From what he wrote, it seemed likely that little purpose was able to be found. Forgive me for trying to inspire some purpose in such a bleak world.
  2. Is it not possible to start a new fund in order to create a new film? That one-man showcase looks wildly entertaining. I bet there would be plenty of people not only in the DOOM community, but many other places elsewhere who might like to contribute towards such a project. Is it not also possible to make the film related to your current plight? You could play all the characters of everyone involved. I'm also willing to bet that you'd get a lot of help for free. There is no shortage of talent here and elsewhere that could help with video editing, script editing, promotion, etc. It might be a lot of writing work and even more work getting everything recorded, but that could also help keep you busy so that the focus is no longer on the plight, but what can become of it. Use the funding to get yourself some help first. Obviously if the one-man show isn't healthy enough to write, perform, and record, there can be no film. It would also be a great way to promote your cause to the media. Perhaps somebody who sees it might be willing to help. I'm almost positive that you can stipulate within the fund that most of it is going to go towards assuring your basic needs in order to fulfill the obligations of the film. I would be willing to contribute my meager video and writing editing abilities completely gratis. Who knows what other talent you could muster? California is a big place--not all of it is LA or SF like it sometimes felt when I lived there. It might feel hopeless, but just remember that you're not the only person going through what you're going through. If you might be able to help somebody else and maybe even prevent this from happening again, then would it be worth the risk? What do you have to lose by trying? Just some ideas. Wish I could do more.

Your bet is right on the money, as far as I can tell. edit: Oh man, I can't read. You were looking for proof, I see as I reread the OP. Dunno about that. There are plenty of Sandy Peterson interviews to sift through. Could be a complete misnomer, but it does seem odd that so many people, as it seems, would attribute it to Sandy for no good reason.
  4. The one round I played felt okay for a Call of Duty clone. Already more fun than it and many other modern competitive shooters. Reeeaaally wish that the distribution platform would let me play it more than one match at a time before refusing to load the next match (stuck loading at 9%, which appears to be a common issue). Maybe I'll look at it more when it's launched. Since you've played it more than me, what are your thoughts about the game?
  5. Ubisoft is infamous for network connectivity issues related to their Ubisoft Connect platform, notably with regards to Rainbow Six: Siege. Nothing has changed. I tried for two hours to play and was only able to successfully connect to a single match. I prefer to play my games, not wait for them to play with me. Which is a shame, because Ubisoft makes great games. If only their networks wanted me to play them.
  6. "Doom Remake 4" appears to be a mod packaged together with an outdated copy of GZDoom, which is the sourceport that runs the mod files. Understanding the difference between a sourceport, which is a game engine, and a mod, which is a package of files meant to be played by the engine, will help solve some of your confusion. ZDL is a launcher for a sourceport engine, which allows the engine to run both an IWAD and multiple mods with the use of a friendly graphical interface. Most mods for DOOM will require a base IWAD, such as DOOM.wad or FREEDOOM.wad, to use as a base resource pack, which only a very few mods do not require (like the one you mentioned, which replaced every single resource with one of its own). Think: engine first, then base IWAD resources and information, then modifications. ZDL makes loading all of these things together a breeze. As for sourceports, your options are very wide. DSDA-DOOM and PrBoom++ are good sourceports for getting that "classic" feel and for optimal performance on most machines. For more advanced features, a more advanced sourceport like GZDoom, Zandronum, or k8Vavoom will be necessary. However, many mods will not work on all sourceport engines, so your mileage may vary. GZDoom is the most compatible with the most mods. Zandronum is a popular second choice, as it supports more modern mapping formats and has a more robust networking system for mulitplayer. I use GZDoom for most things, as I find living without ZScript (its proprietary scripting language) to be a pointless limitation for my goals. Now you're ready to ask what mods to get!
  7. Doom Delta is a pretty good ZDoom mod that tries to bring many Alpha/Beta features into life, such as the rifle, bayonet, and HUD minimap. As to the reasons why they were not included, I would have to look at Half-Life 2 and all the content which was cut from the final product in order to get a better idea about final design decisions when it comes to releasing a retail video game. There were a great many features and an entire storyline that did not make it into the full release of both games. Reasons for these cuts usually sound arbitrary. For Half-Life 2, and I will assume for DOOM, there was no shortage of talent willing and able to make things work. It wasn't that they couldn't have done it, but shouldn't have. "Gameplay" is always the most important factor when deciding whether or not to add a feature. Does it improve core gameplay values or take away from them? In the Half-Life 2 example, much of the story was cut because the scenarios did not introduce enough "good" or "unique" opportunities to introduce gameplay values and were thus deemed either superfluous or repetitive. DOOM did not need all the extra fluff to be phenomenal. It did not need alt-fire or rifles or HUD minimaps, just like Half-Life 2 did not need a sprawling campaign any larger than it already was or more guns that made others redundant.

  9. I totally relate. I, too, am very uneasy when I see companies like Embracer, Warner, and other gigantic publishers gobbling-up so much content. They seem like monsters. But looks can be deceiving. In this case, the monster referenced was recently washed of its brain and has a new one installed. Impossible to know this early if that's good or bad, since there's little evidence to support either claim. I hold my judgment until something actually happens, instead of worrying about what might come. Judging by the evidence from the Nightdive members who have been interview or have otherwise expressed their opinions, this seems like a good move, indeed. Hell, even the interview article is apprehensive, so don't feel too bad! I'd say your reaction is the knee-jerk one to be expected in this era of cash-grab gaming. Just know that there's still hope!

My dream is to be paid handsomely for working as a video game developer--and look! They did it! Here's my money. Take more of it, you delightful bastards.

Had a lot of friends die on me (and went to a couple rehabs, was rejected by many of my family members and old friends, then relocated out-of-state for three years), even after "getting clean," which for me just meant avoiding my "drugs of no-choice." Today, however, I am realizing that I'm still on a slow burn, even though I only smoke weed. The fact that I still relate to posts like this... In fact, the time between my reply and the post I'm quoting is more than enough for someone to develop an addiction and succumb to it permanently. I don't know why I quit the harder stuff. Plenty of people watch their friends die and still stay addicted. I don't know why I still smoke pot. I should probably quit, but the consequences are less-than-fatal, so here I am. Oh, wait. Now I remember: research chemical benzodiazepines, aka clonazolam. Black-out doses at 0.5mg. Death felt as imminent as a lottery ticket. I don't know why I'm bothering with this post. Maybe to prove that someone can be as far-gone as the post I'm quoting and then live long enough to see through on the other side. I'm still a junkie, just a weed, coffee, and video game one, now.
  13. For future reference: click "Releases" on GitHub to find direct downloads. Although by now I hope you realize that the download you linked appears outdated. Thankfully, Ultimate Doom Builder has auto-update, which is like the first time I've ever been thankful for auto-update on anything.
