Does anyone know the legal status of "DOOM-IT?"
Doomkid replied to Gregory Stephens's topic in Doom General
I'm under the impression that it's free of charge, however I don't know it's exact legal status. Would be cool to see it open sourced or even just reverse engineered. I know the easiest way to play MasterLevels these days is to use an auto-compiler that puts them all into one wad, but much more obscure old tools have been worked on over the years, so maybe something will come of this. -
Reminds me of that one movie where Agatha Christie tried to kill off Hercule Poirot (her own fictional character) and he got so pissed that he manifested himself in the real world and argued with her about the implications of what she'd put him through by considering killing him off so callously. If a wad about Doomguy getting pissed off at the community for all they've put him through doesn't exist, it needs to.

Getting almost no reviews at all... what do I do?
Doomkid replied to we're closed's topic in WAD Discussion
Not to get too offtopic, but I feel a good band-aid fix for this would be getting rid of the "latest votes" bit on the legacy site: https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/ Those were the latest votes as of early 2017. They just happened to be the last votes cast before the legacy voting was disabled.. but they're front and center. The "latest files" section beneath it is still the main place people should be checking for new wads (in addition to the hypothetical new "wad release" section). It's a shame for it to be at the bottom of the screen, it just doesn't catch the eye there. I know the plan is to depreciate this frontend eventually, but in the mean time.. -
Rank Mapping Qualities in Order of Importance
Doomkid replied to TheMagicMushroomMan's topic in Doom General
lmao, I sure do - despite feeling how I do on the topic though, I can completely appreciate the opposite perspective. If we think of Doom's pieces as being like Chess pieces for example, I can imagine Chess players getting annoyed immediately if someone was like "hey, let's play a round, but this time pawns do something completely different than what they usually do." For me though, it's kind of like, after the 100,000th Chess match, I'm eager for the pawns to just start dancing around the board in an eclectic way! -
This made me lol

Getting almost no reviews at all... what do I do?
Doomkid replied to we're closed's topic in WAD Discussion
I'm worried I'll get slapped with the loserhammer if I keep saying this over and over, but Wads and Mods SERIOUSLY needs to be divided up into "Wads In Progress" and "Wad Releases", and users given the ability to move their own threads freely between the two. Things are falling off the front page at a more alarming rate than ever. If no one responds, that can be as little as 3 hours on page 1! (Not to mention, people who don't GAF about wads in development and just want to play new releases must have a hell of a time wading through the numerous WIP threads..) Don't feel disheartened. Remember that there are people willing to play your wad on the various Classic Doom discords, some of which you can find here, they are MP centric but they're still full of Doomers who will give feedback. Also, so long as it runs in GZDoom, people will give at least some feedback over on the ZDoom forums as well.- 36 replies

Rank Mapping Qualities in Order of Importance
Doomkid replied to TheMagicMushroomMan's topic in Doom General
1 - Layout Seriously, I have 99999 other wads to blaze through on the backlog, don't give me a crap layout that makes no sense and is impossible to figure out. No amount of great textures or great MIDIs is going to help me if I never have any idea what your switches do since they activate a small door at the other end of this giant labyrinth you've got me wandering around in! Good gameplay obviously matters as well, but other than "single barreling 3 barons is boring" there's no hard and fast rule for what is and is not "good gameplay". For some people it's nail-biter maps with ammo starvation, for some people it's huge slaughterfests, and for some people it's E1-like combat which is largely incidental, with a few focused traps here and there. I'm more partial to the 3rd approach, but is it "better"? Not really. Creativity and originality matters a lot to me as well, if your wad features some custom behaviors I'm naturally going to get more immersed because the experience is more unique. I know how a revenant works.. until you modify it. Then I have to throw all my expectations out and learn some new behaviors, which makes me go from playing with a glazed-over look in my eyes to suddenly being thoroughly engaged. Obviously this is all just totally subjective. Having fun making the map is all that truly matters!- 48 replies

Really nice stuff luca95, thanks for sharing. Love that Greenwar vibe I get from the first one. Added a few more wads to the list as well, including DethMatch.wad by RebelVodka and Chasm DM by DCG Retrowave. So glad to see new DM content spanning the whole year!

I'm Looking For a Way To Share My Doom Wads
Doomkid replied to Worriedidiot's topic in WAD Discussion
These Doom-centric sites are good places to upload your wad: -
Oh man, I didn't even realize. That MIDI is killer, a total ear worm. Well done! I'll get that credit fixed up before upload. This is exactly why I wanted to wait until Henry finished his playthrough before uploading, lol! Plus FrancisT18 has been doing some helpful feedback as well, in a few weeks I think it will have been thoroughly playtested enough to upload comfortably. (I probably just jinxed it by saying that!)

This will fit in perfectly - nice remixing here! -
I've been compiling all kinds of sounds for months now, mostly just stock sound effects and such, but I felt they'd be great to get a bit of variety happening for those sick of hearing the vanilla sounds in all of their wads. So far, this pack contains 220 sound effects, including: Pistol sounds Shotgun sounds Reloading sounds Rocket Launcher sounds Plasma sounds BFG sounds Many various explosions Fireball sounds Item pickups Powerups/Teleporter sounds & a small handful of other misc sounds.. What is NOT included.. YET: Player grunts/pain sounds Enemy grunts/pain sounds/roaming sounds Machinery sounds (doors, lifts, switches, etc) loads of other potentially useful sounds for Doom.. Unfortunately, since I was originally compiling this just for personal use in future wads, I failed to note which wad each sound comes from. Thankfully they're mostly royalty free sounds/commonly available sounds taken from popular sources. If you come across a sound you actually made from scratch in this pack and would like it removed let me know (although would be stunned if that actually ended up being the case at any point). Anyway, enjoy these sounds, hopefully some of you find them useful! https://doomshack.org/uploads/CustomSoundsPack1.zip

I've noticed the only available version of Gothic2 has a date modified of 2014: https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/deathmatch/megawads/gothic2 Could someone possibly direct me to the unmodified 1998 version? Usually I can pretty easily find alternate versions of wads with different timestamps on wad-archive.com, but it seems any version of Gothic2.wad with a date modified from before 2014 isn't here.. I'd really like to get my hands on that version. Thanks!

My god, that's the one - thanks Andromeda! I would have found this on some random GeoCities, Tripod or AngelFire site way back when. I haven't played this in years, wandering around these empty maps amazed me as a kid. It's cool to finally hear the music too, I think I didn't have music at that point. That's a ~20 year personal mystery wrapped up, just one more missing childhood wad left to find!

There's no way the winner could be anyone but Carmack. A cyborg person on his level is always going to reign supreme. I would love to witness the brawl that would be John "Romero" Romero VS Marty "Farty" Stratton (or Snoozy Stratton, as I call him). What an epic battle that would surely be. A+ thread.

What songs do you think should NEVER be in a Doom wad?
Doomkid replied to Dweller Dark's topic in Doom General
You know what I think would be an interesting spin on this? Naming maps that don't fit their music choice. Every song can be made to fit in with Doom so long as the map is themed appropriately, but it would be interesting for people to name so examples of maps they felt really clashed with the music. It's not a value judgement on either the map or the song, but I'm sure I've seen a few examples of this over the years. When Doomed in Space was still being worked on, Eris submitted a MIDI that kicked total ass, but it just happened to clash with the map that was missing music. I'd be curious to see other specific examples of this. -

The Nutty Wad... What music does it use?
