From the reviews, I didn't know what to expect. If you don't like vanilla-flavored stuff, you probably won't like this: although there's the occasional ZDoom effect, it all feels very "Solid 90's" in terms of mapping. Nothing too bad here, couldn't find any of the aforementioned HOMs but overall I see this as a humble little oldschool-style set. Nice little traps placed around too that keep you on your toes.
Yes, the music is indeed a decent rendition of hotel canifornia, so an automatic 2 points for that. Anyone who was mapping in the DEU days made a map like this on their 2nd or 3rd try. Startan everywhere. Nonsensical hordes of every enemy in the game, you get the drill. Proprs for the crusher with 2 soul spheres.. I grabbed one, and was like "wtf" and grabbed the other and it squished me. I'm probably the only person to have fallen for that little trap in many many years.
As a lover of old-style maps, I can't help but appreciate this. As with most maps from this era it actually looks much more impressive in the automap. Doom editors were absolutely crap back then, and to me, that's what makes this so awesome, the author still prevailed as is he were a seasoned Doom mapper.
Several buildings in an outdoor area. I imagine it would make for tedious deathmatch, as there are many cramped and boring hallways, as well as a few missing textures. Decent effort though.
Pure 1994 right here, but not terrible, just funny. Enourmous Rooms full to the brim with tons of every item, and some monsters laid around. A weird invisible maze. Pretty nostalgic, reminds me of my very first maps, and there are a few missing textures. Another one for old WAD collectors.
Haha, the sky border is pretty ugly, but this map is nice and small without being too cramped for DM. I like that it isn't flat and boring, nice effort.
What's with all the shitty reviews above? Im guessing they're old garbage. These maps are pretty decent, but very basic in comparison with where UDM is now. I'd probably be in the minority of saying I really enjoy the DWANGO feel to this pack, even if the layouts aren't perfect.
Not complete garbage, but way too many long boring hallways. Might be suitable for a 4 man FFA but it would move slowly. The texturing is awful. Wads like this have been forver lost to time, but I still remember this being acceptable at one point.
Overall a really nice DM pack by various authors. FraGMarE has updated a lot of these maps in his "Aftermath" pack made in January 2014, making him one of the few doomers who's been mapping for about 20 years. Maps 12, 28 and 29 aren't present for some reason.
