Dammit (BooM + DooM 2) ***
3 levels.
Two first levels are playable and even fun and challenging. There are some little odds, but nothing big... However when I tried to exit level 2 and go to level 3 it crashed... Seems like it used some texture that didn't exist... Later I noticed that this texture exists in DooM 1, but not in DooM 2, and this is DooM 2 WAD... So basically I don't know what level 3 is like...

Dark Eden (DooM 2) ****
One level. New sound, graphics and music.
Damn well done level! Some very good details, and everything is done professionally! The level has a carden, and some kind of large building. Every room is detailed so that there is no "empty" feeling. This level is also very challenging!

Dark star (BooM + DooM 2) ****
One level, new graphics.
Made by Michael Krause.
I turned lights off and put my headphones on and started loading DooM... I didnt know yet for sure what to expect but knowing the author from his previous work I expected to see large structures, big doors, high rooms and a base-style level. I wasnt dissapointed either. It started right outside of an UAC-base (oh how I love that) and continued inside. From the beginning it was clear to me that this wasnt an easy WAD, it was almost non-stop fighting from beginning to end with a few exceptions. It's not a small level either, you have to wonder around these large steel and concrete corridors and odd machinery, nuclear reactors and other interesting things. You will face enemies, a lot of them but you will be given quite plenty of ammo and health too. Of course not too plenty, you cant start wasting it or youll end up beeing dead or in real tight situation. Youll have to look a bit for the right route too, it always isnt that obvious and (hint coming) remember to watch those windows, some of them might even be unblocked... Good luck and have fun while wading through the level for the final challenge...

The first look that I saw on this level looked good, but when I started to actually play this level, I found that it was annoying, small and mostly very badly done.

Dead Perfect (DooM 2) ****
2 levels.
Hard, hard and hard! Yonatan Donner is a man that understands to make levels that also better players enjoy to play! In Yonatans levels the challenge is on the first place and the look on the second place. Don't get me wrong, the levels look good and are well done, although there are many places with unaligned textures. Yonatan also doesn't just place bunch of cybies here and there around the level, but he rather traps the level so everytime you do something, a bunch of nasty, cruel, blood thirsty hell beasts starts teleporting in! The screenshot I took is from first level and it's far from the hardest place of this WAD.

Death Tormention (Ultimate DooM) ****
9 levels, music.
Mabe by Paul Corfiatis
Phew... Usually I don't do level by level reviews, and I don't do it in this case either, but it just happens that these levels were all first released as separated levels, and if you wan't you can read reviews of PE4M1-PE4M9. You can even see a couple of screenshots there...
The levels are mostly excellent, but there's a few flaws in this episode... Mostly just some texture misaligments, specially in earlyer levels, but the major flaw is that when you go to secret level (E4M9) from E4M6 and exit from the secret level, you suddenly get back to E4M3 and 4 levels that you have already played once are there again!
Well, enough about that babble, the levels are excellent, mostly Episode 4 style, and you should get this pack of levels right now!

Death Tormention 2 (Ultimate DooM) *****
12 levels (E1M9, E2M9, E3M9, E4M1-E4M9), music, graphics.
Mabe by Paul Corfiatis, Kristian Aro & Chris Harbin.
Are you ready? Now this one is a fucking hard one and it's going to kick some mean fucking ass, I said are you ready!?!? Yeah baby, this is what Episode 4 is all about, in fact this is how the original episode 4 should have been done and experienced! Yes, you can quote me on that . It looks like E4, but cooler! It has challenge level from hell, but it's not made with "hell revealism" by stuffing cyberdemons everywhere you can fit them, but rather by placing lots of different monsters, selecting them depending on the place that they are put into and making the player to stay on his/her toes all the time. Man, I dont know what else to say, this WAD is brilliant, I loved it! Oh yeah, I had Lot's Of Laughs when I tried to get BFG in one of the levels... I thought that I had just found way to teleport into where it was and boy was I surprised when... Oh well, cant tell it here ;)
Something about bonus levels... Well, dont let them affect the overall quality of the WAD since they are only bonus levels propably not meant to be taken dead seriously :) All of these levels seem to have hilarious music in the background too :) E1M9, although it's very two dimensional and not too amazing to look at, is somehow fascinating and a bit eerie level. It's a maze, and in a way it's very Wolfensteinish and you will not have very large amount of ammunition or big selection of weapons. E2M9 then again doesnt give you much challenge, is very small and not very interesting. Kill couple of monsters (if you want) and go to exit - that's it. E3M9 has the strangest music... The idea of E3M9 is simple, dont die, teleport in another room, dont die, get key, teleport back, dont die, go to exit, dont die, clear your way and exit the level without dying ;) Secret level of episode 4 is more serious than others, although it too has "funny music" playing, but it's neat level and challenging too :) Download: PE4_DT2.ZIP (727 Kb)

Deathwish (DooM 1) ***
9 levels.

Mabe by Bob Larkin (homepage).
"You are in the bowels of Hell with no hope for escape. What you gonna do about it?". There's the description of this WAD and why would you need something better? Anyway, what are you gonna do about it? Hell, this is DooM and thus the most obvious answer is to grab your gun and start kicking some demon ass right away! These levels are quite good quality, very DooMy... They are not very detailed but they look good, kinda like original DooM 1 later episodes when the places were just structures, caves, etc. with no obvious meaning and the detail is not much different. Challenge is there and it's good, not ultra-hard but I had to be on my toes sometimes on ultra-violence and that is a sign of good challenge for me... Well, enough for the praises, it's not all positive what I'm going to say... Unfortunately Bob has forgotten to align the textures and it results to some places looking uglyer than they should. However this is certainly not a big problem with this WAD's as at least my interest was much more in playing than looking around places, misaligments never bothered me too much with this levels, sometimes I paid a bit more attention to them but even then I ignored it and kept playing. Yeah, this is a cool one.

DemoniZed (BooM + DooM 2) *****
2 levels, graphics, music.
These levels are massive! Both of them are filled with monsters and challenge! Specially the first one is big, hard and filled with special effects that are mostly only possible with BooM, and some are never seen before (like dropping through a whole in the middle of floor and falling to another room), but the second level isn't a let down either! Second one is not quite as big & detailed, but it gives a massive challenge too! Don't go blasting on Ultra Violence unless you are at least DooM 2 Master, and preferrably even better!

Descent 1 (DooM 2) ****
1 deathmatch level.
Very cool deathmatch level indeed. No new graphics included, and the texture usage is very simple, but the level looks very cool, and what's most important is that it plays well! Lot's of frags ahead, and I do mean LOT'S! Oh, almost forgot: Light shadings are done very well in this level too.
NOTE! You need a new source port with DooM's limits removed to play this level. Best bets are BooM or ZDooM. ZDooM also allows playing through internet, and maximum of 8 players!

Descent 2 (DooM 2) *****
1 deathmatch level.
Made by Mike "Cyberdemon" Watson.
Please note that a source port that removes the tutti-frutti bug is needed to run this level. At least BooM and ZDooM does this currently.
This level has almost the features that I wan't from a good deathmatch level: Lot's of frags & good simple style that doesn't slow down my computers. The level is done with quite good lightning effects, all weapons are easy to get any time you wan't and that frag speed is fast even with only two players. Walls are made from very good looking black bricks and the level structure is very simple. Only thing that I'm not sure about is that how well does this play in -altdeath mode, but in regular deathmatch it's a total blast!

Dickie 04 (DooM 2) ****
One level.
NOTE! This is level 4! Not level 1! Type IDCLEV04 in the game to start on right level!
This WAD was very good one. Well planned design, and good use of graphics make this a good WAD. A little drawback is that there are few places where the monsters are a bit annoying (note! There can be a LOT of monsters and a LOT of challenge without annoyment too). However nobody forces you to play with Ultra Violence :) Also, this WAD is a really small one to download.

This WAD is quite big and well detailed. It gets boring on some places, and in one place it's very annoying (what is more annoying than open area with few Pain Elementals that fly too far away from you). However I consider this to better than Dickie 04 on some places, but on some places worse.

This one is quite dynamite! It really got me on the mood, it gave good challenge on Ultra Violence and it was so much like original DooM 2 levels are! Definitely worth of Download! This WAD is designed for DooM 2, but I played it with BooM which makes sure that monsters don't go to sleep after restoring game.

Dickie 08 (DooM 2) ***
One level.
This level has excellent design, but it's just too confusing for my taste. This replaces level 8, "tricks and traps", so the designer has put some really hard puzzles in this level. I had to read how to get the keys from the text file, because I simply didn't find a way to get them... Other than that, this was really cool wad.

Damn well detailed "DooM 2-style" level that gives very tuff challenge on UV... In the beginning the level is quite easy, but it gets slowly harder and harder when you proceed longer. In the end you gotta know what you do, or you will end up dead easyer than in most WAD's that I've seen.

Dismemberment (BooM + DooM 2) ****
One level, music, graphics.
Very good looking brick style level that gives un-usually high challenge. Some people claim that the level is even too hard, but that's not true. If your not able to play it through, then maybe you should learn to play better and stop whining :) The level also contains some very nasty slime pit traps that you can't get away, so don't fall!
Btw, there are few little texture misalignments in the level , but I only noticed them because I was looking for them...

DM County (DooM 2) **
One level.
This level could be a good level, but there are so many flaws and odds in it that I had to give it only two stars... This level has some kind of city with lot's of buildings and a lake... One of the big odds is that the water hurts! My basic rule with level design is: "If it hurts, make it slime or lava".

D.O.A. - The Conspiracy (part 2) (DooM 1) ****
1 level
This level has a DooM 1 style, but it's done better, and done a whole lot better than the first part of D.O.A. The challenge is there! Most players just can't go blasting into rooms with monsters... Plan your use of ammo carefully and you might still need your fists to work out some demons (I beated a couple of barons too), but don't worry: You'll just have to find that berzerk pack :) Style is good, but could be done a bit more detailed way... And the ending... Oh, I love it (read the story first and then play, so you understand it)!

DooM 2200 (DooM 2) ***
6 levels. Graphics.
This WAD is one of the hardest WAD's that I've played for some time. However it's a bit like Hell Revealed: Hard challenge, but medium quality level detail. At first the levels look even a bit too undetailed, but they get better in the end. Anyway, this is for those that are hungry for more and more challenge!

Doom City (DooM 2) ***
1 level, graphics.
Made by Shams Young.
In my honest opinion, this is one of the best city levels I've played. Still, this is quite standard 3-star quality... Maybe there just is not much good city levels, or maybe I just havent played many of them? Anyway, it's actually maybe a bit higher than average 3-star, maybe higher 3-star quality... The only real flaw in the WAD that I noticed was texture alignments and they really dont bother me in this case, as there isnt much of them or then I'm just running fast past them... This level gives you gas-station, shops, burger place and stuff like that, and it's more realistic than most city levels I've played. I recommend this. Could be a bit bigger level though... You can play it through quite fast.

DooM Resurrection Episode I (DooM 2 + ZDooM) *****
5 levels, graphics, sounds.
Made by Tommie (Fatal) Quick.
Very good. Very good indeed. These levels feel really good to play - that is, moving in them is a pleasure and killing in them is even bigger pleasure. The game proceeds smoothly through well detailed and pretty damn neat lookin basement-style areas and the challenge varyes from simple fun-shooting to difficult, tight situations with big (and smaller) monsters while beeing on low health (well, at least I was :) ). Not only this but the levels are made to look and feel like the proceeding is happening very logically, not just random buildings, hitting switches, finding keys with no real purpose. The author has used quite a few scripts to create some nice effects, situations and ways to proceed. Activating a laser cannon to blow up a door (see screenshots) is a good example - and a bomber plane suddenly making an airstrike to kill a cyberdemon is another one. I'll save the rest for you to find ;) There's really nothing negative for me to say about this set of levels except that if you dont save enough ammo for the last level you are going to have a really hard time in the first open-air place (possibly impossible to get through if have too little ammo?).

Dystopia 3 (DooM ][) *****
Screenshot
Just one perfect wad more! 11-levels full of action! This quality stuff is made by Iikka Keränen and Adelusion which I think that are the best level builders in DooM business. These guys have also made some levels for the Strain, total conversion, and seems like some of the levels that they used in Dystopia 3 have been used in Strain too... It's not a big deal, but I don't like re-use of levels too much...
