Roofi Posted January 4, 2022 (edited) January 2022, Happy New Year ! Standard Leaderboard 1. [1] mhrz MAP 04 - mhrz had a very bad time with some hell knights after taking a random elevator. 2. [1] Dragonfly MAP 04 - While looking for the way to open the blue bars, Dragonfly didn't pay attention to the baron who was quietly walking around. 3. [1] NoisyVelvet MAP 04 - After victoriously fighting a group of hitscanners, NoisyVelvet got tricked by a chaingunner hiding in a monster closet. 4. [1] dt_ MAP 04 - Dt thought that the sooner the blue key trap is dealt with, the easier the level will be afterwards but wrong! 5. [1] Anima Zero MAP 04 - AnimaZero ran out of patience by opening the door before the arch-vile's incantation ended! 6. [1] Napsalm MAP 04 - Napslam decided that it would be too cowardly to survive the blue key trap by escaping the room. 7. [1] Suitepee MAP 04 - Suitepee could have escaped this trap unscathed if he had simply pressed the "use" button on the door! 8. [2] Roofi MAP 04 - I naively thought that the RK trap had only two vile arch-viles ... As soon as the door closed behind me, I understood in an instant my mistake. 9. [1] Beginner MAP 04 - The only possible reaction from Beginner and anyone else regarding the red key trap translates to: "What the fuck man?" 10. [1] BoxY MAP 03 - Boxy should have worked on long jumps before playing this wad. 11. [1] Maribo MAP 03 - Rule #1, never take a teleporter without killing the enemies around. Especially in a 1990's wad! 12. [1] Bdubzzz MAP 03 - Bdubbz jumped into the slime pit but forgot that teleporters did not yet exist in the old wads. 13. [3] NaZa MAP 02 - Naza valiantly dodged the many monsters patrolling the large courtyards, machine gunned the chaingunners but ended up being humiliated by the most fearsome boss: a Hell Knight! Nothing is placed at random in this wad. 14. [1] leodoom85 MAP 01 - Sad world where no one prevented leodoom85 from dissolving into slime. :( 15. [1] DisgruntledPorcupine MAP 01 - DisgruntledPorcupine was able to get rid of the revenant guarding the elevator but ended up being tricked by the one guarding the teleporter. Too bad, the exit was very close. 16. [1] Vince Vega MAP 01 - Vince Vega underestimated the extreme accuracy of revenants' projectiles 17. [1] Andromeda MAP 01 - Andromeda tried in vain to fight off a horde of pain elementals at the bottom of a slime-filled ravine. Almost out of the woods, a wandering lost soul reduced his 7 poor HP to nothing. 18. [1] E.M MAP 01 - E.M. didn't expect so many enemies to be waiting for him when he got out of the elevator (I almost died in the same place myself). 19. [1] Austinado MAP 01 - Austinado finally lost patience about killing all these lost souls and tried at all costs to get through. 20. [1] Terrarienn MAP 01 - Terrarienn forgot that he was in a 1990's wad and that hidden lifts could suddenly go down! The Pain Elemental waited for the right moment to spit out its lost soul. 21 [1] Crusader No Regret MAP 01 - While trying to get the monsters to kill each other in the yard, a cacodemon ended up killing him. 22. [2] Pegleg MAP 01 - By dint of focusing on a revenant, Pegleg got caught from behind (sorry for the term). 23. [1] Rujasu MAP 01 - Rujasu managed to kill 14 monsters during his short journey. 24. [1] 4shockblast MAP 01 - Even the strongest speedrunner cannot survive the first map of Realm of Shades 25. [1] Spendoragon MAP 01 - Spendoragon failed to outrun the guards armed with their powerful shotguns. 26. [1] Pseudonaut MAP 01 - Pseudonaut tried to run away, but finally decided to find out what hurt more between a revenant rocket in the skull and a spectre bite in the butt. 27. [1] PsychEyeball MAP 01 - Is this room badly designed? I don't know, but we are surely dealing with the most intelligent shotgunners in the world! Prepared Leaderboard What is the Doomworld Ironman League? The DWIronman League is a monthly competition in which participants aim to survive for as many levels as possible in the given map set, preferably in one sitting. Click the spoiler tag at the bottom of the post for a detailed list of rules. Players of all levels of ability are welcome. It could change the way you play Doom! This month the DWIronman League dies to Realm of Shades (-complevel 2), an old Doom 2 episode by @NokturnuS from the 1990's which features new textures , good old vanilla mapping tricks and intricate layouts ! Essential Info: Doom II: Hell on Earth as the IWAD (doom2.wad) Compatibility level 2 for DSDA-Doom/PrBoom+, or "Doom (strict)" for modern GZDoom. Should also work in Chocolate Doom, Crispy Doom, and other Chocolate-derived ports. Difficulty: Ultra-Violence (-skill 4) Time estimate: few hours Number of maps: 7 > Download Realm of Shade dsda-doom.exe -iwad doom2.wad -file ROSLEV.WAD ROSTEX.WAD ROSMUS.WAD -complevel 2 -skill 4 -record demo_name.lmp Rules: Hide contents There are two competitions: Standard and Prepared: To compete successfully in the Standard competition: your first play of the selected WAD(s) constitutes your one and only attempt for the month. To compete successfully in the Prepared competition: your one and only attempt for the month is determined BY YOU immediately before play and may follow any prior number of active (playing the set) preparation that is strictly for practice/inspection purposes only. You cannot compete in the Standard competition after submitting a run to the Prepared competition. You may submit the first of your practice attempts to the Standard competition. UV only (excepting 1CC format), continuous recording. No pistol-starting each level. Demos (DSDA-Doom, PrBoom+, GLBoom, Eternity, Crispy, or Chocolate), stream highlights, and video recordings are the only accepted proofs. You must link to these runs in the thread. No additional WADs may be loaded. No inspection of the WAD(s)'s content in an editor if you are submitting a Standard run. No cheat codes and no features that result in behavior beyond what is possible in the intended source port (e.g. freelook, jumping and crouching in a boom set). This includes dynamic lights and brightmaps. If streaming or recording videos using an advanced source port with compatibility options, you must display these settings on-screen before your run. In ZDoom derivative ports, "Doom/Boom(strict)" will suffice. If you choose to stream/record your run for video rather than provide a demo and you die before completing a single level, either on the first map of a set OR because a single level was selected for the month, you must display the number of monsters killed/remaining in the level before you quit. You do not have to play the secret levels in order to register a complete run. However, a player who finishes the game having completed more secret levels than his/her competitors will rank higher than them. You cannot load a game having progressed past the save point. You cannot consult Doom Builder during your run to check for map details. If the recording of your official run is interrupted due to technical difficulties, you are not permitted a second attempt. Any surviving recording may be used to register a DNF result. Accidentally restarting a level before a death exit takes you to the tally screen will disqualify your run. If you are competing in the Standard competition, you are required to affix one of three numbers to your run informing the League of your degree of familiarity with the map/set played. Note that your evaluation should only take into consideration the content covered in your run (e.g. if you remember only one part of a level in a set you haven't played before but never reach that level, you should list your run as a [1] instead of [2]): 1. This is a blind run. If I have played or watched any of the level/set being played before, I cannot remember any details that would offer a reasonable advantage over truly blind players. * 2. This is not a blind run. I have familiarity with the set - played the level/set before, or watched it being played, and can remember some details that would offer a reasonable advantage over blind players. 3. This is not a blind run. I have passively prepared for the competition - watched the level/set being played via stream, demo or video after it was announced as this month's challenge. "Reasonable" in this instance asks you to consider whether the details in question are worth committing to memory. As in, you would thank the person who gave you this information with a straight face and not expect to be laughed at for being an utter berk. Roofi Posted January 4, 2022 (edited) Dead in map 04's Red key fight. Category 2. Realms of Shades is a much more difficult wad than it looks. Obviously, it is far from wads like Sunlust except for the place where I just died maybe. However, the maps are particularly long and contain traps that can easily kill careless or too nervous players. Aesthetically, there is a real contribution on this side. The rendering is very well done with light gradations and mapping tricks featuring fake 3D Realms of Shades is perhaps one of my favorite wads from the 90's even if I never finished it until now. Only map 04 was a real discovery. I had played the first three maps during DWMC in 2018. DEMO Edited January 4, 2022 by Roofi 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

Anima Zero Posted January 5, 2022 Never played this wad before...and frankly I cheated death on the first map way too many times to count. Love it when you turn around a corner, eat a rev missile, then have to run to the other side of a room with hitscanners while on 5 health to get some medpacks. Map 4 even saw to nearly screw me over because lol bridge shenanigans and somehow failing to find health for a good 5-10 minutes while on 8 health. Recovered from that only to hit the galaxy brain button when dealing with a couple viles near a YK door later in the map. Capital! DWIronman_ROS_AnimaZero.zip 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

NaZa Posted January 5, 2022 Potentially the most cruel, most bizarre and most painful death I've ever had in Ironman so far (or at least on par with Stardate 20x6 and Plutonia; worse than Running Late 2 because I died next to a +1 on the leaderboard and not +10 HP), and I'm participating since Feb 2017. It really wasn't supposed to happen like this. Standard Category 3 (watched Belial's M1 and M4 maxes, the other one didn't help) - dead on MAP02, died to the final monster of the entire map... I mean, it could have been MAP01 with 6 monsters killed because I was down to 7 HP then 4 HP then 1 HP in the first 15 seconds but miraculously managed to hang on... dwironman_jan22_naza.zip Why it is so cruel: Spoiler After two MIRACULOUS 7 HP clutches at the very start of MAP01 I managed to pull myself back together and comfortably survive it. I was also comfortably surviving MAP02 and then got the wrong weapon out at the very end. Chaingunners here, there, everywhere, me with the super shotgun, can't switch out or I lose massive time and health. I have incredible rolls, I survive, it's 30 HP, the final room, a few rocket blasts, HK survives. SSG out but I fail to notice the door closed, I go back and it hits me. Ouch. I was so mad and still am. Had I just rushed forward I would've been at least third for some time. This was just brutal. The WAD itself is basically just the type of WAD that's good for Ironman. Excellent pick. Yes, it has a lot of RNG involved which isn't exactly ideal but MAP02 you need to really think about how to approach the outside area. Do you want to waste ammo on the cacodemons and cyberdemons, or do you make a rush for the exit? M1 as well. Very tactical mapset and I really enjoyed what I had played of it. I am quite sad I hadn't gotten further but will finish it. Great pick, in my opinion. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

BoxY Posted January 5, 2022 Category 1, dead on map03 with 126/232. Entered map03 at 34:48, died at 42:01. Pretty hardcorez wad for 1998, I'm kinda impressed. The starting room is some legendary BS for a cat 1 run, but I guess it sets the tone for what you should expect going forward. Overall these aren't my kind of maps, but compared to Talosian they at least contained something resembling gameplay so it was pretty fun overall. dwim-bx-ros.lmp 6 Quote Share this post Link to post

Vince Vega Posted January 7, 2022 Cat I, dead on MAP01 to a Revenant missile turning sharper than me. 129/168 K. Pegleg Posted January 8, 2022 OK. I had been considering this for the IronEagle, and I had played a bit of it, albeit on HNTR, but that was enough to clue me in to what to expect going in. Thus, that makes this run a Category 2. Dead on Map 01 Kills: 41/168 Time: 5:50 dwi_pegleg_ros_cat2.zip I rather liked the mapset; although while I enjoyed what I played on UV, personally, I had a better time on lower difficulties. That's not to say the maps are bad, because they're not, it's just on the harder side of the scale for my tastes. The use of textures is pretty good, the monster placement was good, and the ambushes and traps were thought out and well done. There was a lot of health and ammo scattered around, so it's not as punishing as it could have been. I thought the maps were generally well assembled, and the layouts were pretty good. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

Suitepee Posted January 12, 2022 (edited) https://youtu.be/Ng9twa7EXrY Category 1 run, died on map 4 to a Revenant. However, the blame lies with me assuming that room had a lockin door; turns out it didn't and I could have easily gone back through it to negate most of the ambush entirely. Oh well, 90's mapping? Also thanks for redeeming yourself with a much better Ironman choice, @Roofi. This wad was fun to play. Edited January 13, 2022 by Suitepee 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

Disappointing being a magnet for homing missiles after recovering from going down to 8% in the first minute. I have the time but not the will for a prepared go. Ew, IWAD music. Pegleg Posted January 31, 2022 Here is my Category 3 submission. Dead on Map 01 Kills: 119/168 Time: 11:25 dwi_pegleg_ros_cat3.zip This mapset, at least the first map, is set up so that you can treat the different encounters as almost separate events. If you stage them appropriately, you can minimize the threats you face at any one time. Of course, it does a good job of luring you into triggering multiple threats at once. Kudos to NokturnoS for that. As for my play, once again, a revenant has ended my run. Perhaps I should have used more of the 40+ rockets I had, but with a pain elemental and lost souls nearby, I was nervous. Oh well. Fortune favors the bold. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
