The yearly leader board

Standard Leaderboard

  1. [1] SURVIVED (15:26): Bdubzzz - Skips sharpening things and sharpens his time.
  2. [1] SURVIVED (16:09): Anima Zero - Cuts through the map in immense time for a blind run. Time for a serious GJ ANIMA.
  3. [1] SURVIVED (17:35): 4shockblast - Almost gets blasted under the lights, but remains in tempo to net a second green in a row.
  4. [1] SURVIVED (18:47): finnks13 - Proves September was no fluke with quite a good run!
  5. [2] SURVIVED (21:30): NaZa - Slippery feet can occur even on rubble, apparently. Still, can't complain...
  6. [1] SURVIVED (23:19): Asbadagba - Well that's a nice streak of good results continued with a comfortable run. Even after that cyber encounter.
  7. [2] SURVIVED (23:23): LadyMistDragon - Frantic first five minutes culminate in a supercharge wasted. Makes the finish more rewarding!
  8. [1] SURVIVED (28:26): ginc - Despite beating the map, I doubt ginc will be listening to I'm Blue (Da Ba Dee) for quite some time.
  9. [1] SURVIVED (33:00): dt_ - Declares run hour-long, lasts half as much, still makes it to the end. As humble as always.
  10. [2] SURVIVED (33:07): UncleTito - Conquering a mapset with marshal uncle Tito. Doesn't get any more relatable than that!
  11. [1] SURVIVED (35:22): Vince Vega - As always, perseverance is highly appreciated. And rewarded with a green.
  12. [1] SURVIVED (41:30): NoisyVelvet - It's only been, what, three and a half years since Fomalhaut. Time flies! Welcome back to Greenland.
  13. [1] SURVIVED (43:06): Pseudonaut - A lot faster is an understatement, but at least it was comfortable. Beautiful dancing under the red lights.
  14. [1] SURVIVED (1:10:33): head_cannon - Hey, we got a first-time survivor! Even though a head cannon isn't exactly a sharp thing, didn't matter.
  15. [1] 76%: Horus - Felt so bad for the demons and backed up into a rocket to make them feel better. Recovered well from the first minute, however!
  16. [1] 76%: Beginner - Replayed it a dozen times, but I'm still not sure who the heat-seeking missile was in this situation. :^)
  17. [1] 73%: SuyaSS - New study shows cyberdemon rockets are quite addictive. When you catch one, they'll keep hitting harder and harder.
  18. [1] 72%: NightTerror - I can't begin to imagine the amount of posthumous honours that pinky will be given. Heroic.
  19. [1] 65%: SCF - Yes, one can run past him, but where's the fun in that? :^)
  20. [1] 60%: Andromeda - I had an inkling this particular cyberdemon could cause trouble.
  21. [1] 50%: Brainfreezzzzz - Froze brains with plasma and got their brain frozen for eternity with a gift from [name pending].
  22. [1] 45%*: Suitepee - Falls victim to... kinetic energy? Momentum? Whatever it is, it doesn't have the MONSTER flag...
  23. [1] 6%: Luleta - Didn't know what the switch did so, naturally, called for help. The barons politely offered their help. Another honourable upload!
  24. [1] 6%: Pegleg - Challenges the spider to a duel disregarding its floating buddies. In the end, they weren't even necessary to the outcome.
  25. [1] 0%: Ludi - I really, really wish I could round it up... sorry...

* Lost souls counted in GZDoom - Suitepee had anywhere between 120 and 90 kills, approximated it to 110.

Prepared Leaderboard

  1. [#] SURVIVED (15:09): LadyMistDragon - 2 out of 2. Proves how important it is to know your way around the map. Also... nervewracking.

What is the Doomworld Ironman League?

The DWIronman League is a monthly competition in which participants aim to survive for as many levels as possible in the given map set, preferably in one sitting. Click the spoiler tag at the bottom of the post for a detailed list of rules. Players of all levels of ability are welcome. It could change the way you play Doom!

In October 2022 the League will have its wits tested by a very spooky offering... in a bit of a different way than you'd usually consider spooky. If you consider sharp things like knives, nails or bee stingers spooky, then, uhhh... this WAD is indeed perfectly suited for your October! Sharp Things (-complevel 3) by @Xaser has a few rather sharp encounters, but be not scared - Xaser gives you enough space to thread the needle well. For those who still seek the spook factor of blood and dark; well, there's a lot of dark grey and red blood in the map, so I didn't trick you in the end. Ha! Navigation could prove to be quite an enemy in this one... though it should be comfortably the shortest challenge Ironmen have yet faced. Partially due to a break from three 15+ map challenges, partly due to NaNoWADMo in which yours truly and a few other regular Ironmen will be participating.

Sharpen yer brass knuckles because it'll get bloody.

Essential Info

  • (The Ultimate) Doom
  • Compatibility level 3, or "Doom (strict)" for ZDoom derivative ports.
  • 1 map
  • Time estimate: 15-60 minutes
  • (G)ZDoom users will be REQUIRED to load THIS pk3 by @ginc - load it last - in order to remove lost souls from the kill count.

Rules:

Spoiler

  • There are two competitions: Standard and Prepared:

    • To compete successfully in the Standard competition: your first play of the selected WAD(s) constitutes your one and only attempt for the month.

    • To compete successfully in the Prepared competition: your one and only attempt for the month is determined BY YOU immediately before play and may follow any prior number of active (playing the set) preparation that is strictly for practice/inspection purposes only. You cannot compete in the Standard competition after submitting a run to the Prepared competition. You may submit the first of your practice attempts to the Standard competition.

  • UV only (excepting 1CC format), continuous recording. No pistol-starting each level.
  • Demos (PrBoom+, GLBoom, Eternity or Chocolate), stream highlights and video recordings are the only accepted proofs. You must link to these runs in the thread.
  • No additional WADs may be loaded.
  • No inspection of the WAD(s)'s content in an editor if you are submitting a Standard run.
  • No cheat codes and no features that result in behavior beyond what is possible in the intended source port (e.g. freelook, jumping and crouching in a boom set). This includes dynamic lights and brightmaps. If streaming or recording videos using an advanced source port with compatibility options, you must display these settings on-screen before your run. In ZDoom derivative ports, "Doom/Boom(strict)" will suffice.
  • If you choose to stream/record your run for video rather than provide a demo and you die before completing a single level, either on the first map of a set OR because a single level was selected for the month, you must display the number of monsters killed/remaining in the level before you quit.
  • You do not have to play the secret levels in order to register a complete run. However, a player who finishes the game having completed more secret levels than his/her competitors will rank higher than them.
  • You cannot load a game having progressed past the save point.
  • You cannot consult Doom Builder during your run to check for map details.
  • If the recording of your official run is interrupted due to technical difficulties, you are not permitted a second attempt. Any surviving recording may be used to register a DNF result.
  • Accidentally restarting a level before a death exit takes you to the tally screen will disqualify your run.
  • If you are competing in the Standard competition, you are required to affix one of three numbers to your run informing the League of your degree of familiarity with the map/set played. Note that your evaluation should only take into consideration the content covered in your run (e.g. if you remember only one part of a level in a set you haven't played before but never reach that level, you should list your run as a [1] instead of [2]):

  1. This is a blind run. If I have played or watched any of the level/set being played before, I cannot remember any details that would offer a reasonable advantage over truly blind players. *
  2. This is not a blind run. I have familiarity with the set - played the level/set before, or watched it being played, and can remember some details that would offer a reasonable advantage over blind players.
  3. This is not a blind run. I have passively prepared for the competition - watched the level/set being played via stream, demo or video after it was announced as this month's challenge.

* "Reasonable" in this instance asks you to consider whether the details in question are worth committing to memory. As in, you would thank the person who gave you this information with a straight face and not expect to be laughed at for being an utter berk.

Category 2? even though it was the path to the red key that was the only thing I remembered really

Survived in 23:23:09

I'll probably submit a prepared run later.

Did I mention you put in complevel 2 for some reason in the introductory text despite this being a UD wad?

Cat 1 and...survived?  For all the fail I had last month, I managed to stumble my way to victory with an exit time of 16:09.  Nothing too over the top in this level...which PROBABLY means Hell Revealed II is incoming in the next few months to quickly rectify that for me, heh.

That's not a category 3 run. That's a run for the Prepared Leaderboard.

I thought they were practically the same thing for all intents and purposed, but ok.

That's okay. I'm mostly saying it so people don't get misconceptions that the standard category 3 means you've prepared by outright playing the set, which is wrong. (It's watching the set being played.)

Category 1, dead with 158 kills

DWIL_22-10-sharp_SCF.zip

Lost all focus while shotgunning a cyber to death. Was distracted thinking about other things, like how I thought I'd gotten myself softlocked when I fell down the first time and didn't see a way back up.

Cat 2, survived in 21:30.

Played this a few months ago, think it was June, when I started having ideas for the future of Ironman as it was on a shortlist of WADs I found. Was initially supposed to be the opener for next year if I were to organize that particular challenge, but having found glaring deathspots and blind-killers in WADs I considered for this month (and it's not the season to be jolly yet), I decided to spook things up a bit with it. I have not replayed this since. Map's memorable enough to remember its main setups well even four months after playing it.

Spoiler

Could've left around a minute or so earlier had I not failed at parkour and had a certain cyberdemon not been a pain in the ass. Not that it would've mattered!

Leaving the red room for the end was a strategic decision because there was a really big chance I'd die there as I cannot battle two cyberdemons at the same time with any weapon whatsoever. I don't think I took a large hit there, it was the other cyberdemon which shot my ass a few times.

While I blitzed the opening to gain a shotgun, chaingun and armor, I lowered my speed afterwards, but even then I wouldn't have gotten even close to Anima. Foreknowledge goes a long way in this map as it has a somewhat puzzle-y gameplay. All the more congratulations to all the category 1 runners who've exited in less than 30 minutes, especially Anima who's sovereingly leading by over 5 minutes. Time for a non-sarcastic GJ ANIMA!

Yearly leaderboard's also been updated. After @Bdubzzz's script third victory this year, a lead worth more than 100,000 points has opened up over @Beginner. This effectively means Bdubzzz can take a month off and still be in first. Mad. Also kudos to @4shockblast for rocking up and almost winning on the 25th hour - goes up by 13 places due to that! Top 3 is untouched and Maribo broke away from the battle I pointed out last month a bit, though arguably it's even closer now as there's only less than 30,000 points splitting @Anima Zero in 4th and @mhrz in 7th; dt_ slipped out of the top 5 but is still well and truly in this battle in 6th. Anima's good result this month might help with the momentum a bit. Top 10 is also unchanged, though @BoxY and @ginc both lose a spot due to missing a month - this might give consistent late-comer @LadyMistDragon a chance to grab it by the end of the year. Time's ticking.

As for this month, the map may be a bit on the easy side, evidenced by the current 60% survival rate. However, while Ironman is usually about overcoming arduous odds, as ser Krypto once said in a legendary post, I feel like not every set in Ironman should necessarily be a big challenge for everyone. It's also true Ironman shouldn't devolve into a speedrunning competition. Other than the two reasons I outlined already (NaNoWADMo somewhat limiting the time one could devote to this and it being a spooky WAD deserving of being featured in October), I think this map hits an important aspect - navigation and orientation. It's assets a Doom player should find important, and this map is, in a way, a test of how well and quickly you're able to navigate your surroundings, solve quasi-puzzles - heck, even do parkour - and leave. It's not a map where your only method of going fast is blitzing through walls of corpses ahead of you. The vibes this map gave me upon my first time playing it was that it's a map where you've got to think logically about progression, notice clues about where you should go next and what something does. Not only this, but it's also, frankly, a really solid map. So, while the survival rate may be higher, I think it's a crucial map to be played in this challenge at some point. I hope you understand.

Leaderboard updated. @Anima Zero's lead is quite convincing so far, but @LadyMistDragon's prepared run proves that the door is slightly ajar to does with foreknowledge. Will someone dare speedrun the map and reach the first place... or die trying?

Also... due to me forgetting there's an insane amount of lost souls in the map, I'm afraid @Suitepee's death total can only be approximate. Due to this, I invite everyone who plans on using (G/Q)ZDoom to submit a run to download @ginc's pk3, now linked in essential info, and load it (last!) along with xa-sharp deh and wad. This will, to my knowledge, erase the MONSTER flag for lost souls, thereby making the map have 243 monsters, same as outside of (G/Q)ZDoom.

With permission, went ahead and updated the board with @Ludi's submission. While there might be a certain creepy, dreary, big, fat, round number on the board, I feel the honourable upload deserves this at least. :^)

Took me a while with the platforming heh. Some really exciting stuff like eating a rocket book-ended by wandering around the map a bit, forgetting I hadn't pressed the blue switch.

I thought I was holding my own against the SMM with the plasma rifle, but she had a different opinion of the matter. I probably should have gone after some of smaller targets first and come back for her, but here we are.

The map had a nice aesthetic to it, as the creepy skin, metal, marble, and red fortress with copious amounts of blood. I would have rather fewer enemies and more ammo in the beginning, but it's probably not as difficult to approach as it initially seems. (Well, it's evidently not, given that most people did rather well with it.) It actually seems to have some flexibility to it, which is nice.
