NaZa Posted January 1, 2023 (edited) January, 2023 > The yearly standings Take a peek at the end results of last year! > The Ironman Discord Server Standard Leaderboard [1] SURVIVED (43:41): Bdubzzz - Hot feet in the first 10 min, (2 HP hype!!) yet in the end, nothing new under the sun; sublime recovery. [1] SURVIVED (49:26): 4shockblast - "Not my kind of gameplay," yet still does well enough for 2nd. Mark of a madman. [1] SURVIVED (50:51): Asbadagba - Asbadagba stays in form and sets the pace for blind runs. Good stuff! [1] SURVIVED (1:02:59): SCF - An equivalent to the end of this run would be dancing a Viennese waltz on the edge of the Grand Canyon. [1] SURVIVED (1:06:27): Vince Vega - Had an easier time with the final battle than with finding the third red key switch. Nice job, though! [1] SURVIVED (1:28:25): ginc - 234 hitpoints in a single hit sucks, but that hell knight at the 1h mark was nasty too. And yet ginc lives. [1] SURVIVED (1:40:09): Suitepee - After a few insane clutches, leaves the map (and 2022!) behind. Edge-of-seat kind of run. Mad. [1] SURVIVED (1:49:56): dt_ - Has a few issues in maintenance (both navigation and health wise), but opens the account with a green. [1] 89%: marver0PS - The stuck spider's spirit lived on. [1] 73%: Brainfreezzzzz - Astronomically precise hurtfloor tic timing. Soul-crushing end. [1] 68%: LadyMistDragon - Not grabbing a medikit at 5% health could've been an incredibly smart play. Key word: could've. [1] 61%: Beginner - Splash damage. 'Nuff said. [1] 59%: Anima Zero - Despite being cleared to go, decided to clock in overtime. [2] 59%: Crusader No Regret - Oh, that death screen is just brutal. The big blue orb smirking at a dead corpse. [1] 59%: Andromeda - And they all fall down. (Except the two cyberdemons. They aren't important anyway.) [1] 58%: BoxY - "Weapons? Where we're going, we don't need weapons." -BoxY, probably. [1] 58%: Horus - Marble might be green, but the screen consistently stayed red. Slalom unsuccessful. [1] 58%: Kam Tovalski - Couldn't repeat the shave from 30 seconds prior. [1] 55%: Pseudonaut - Swiftly copping the soulsphere won't save you from messing a rocket slalom up. [1] 54%: WorriedIdiot - Replace monsters with humans and it's a guy running to catch a subway train. Knee-Deep in the Queue. [2] 54%: NoisyVelvet - The Sacrifice of the Tomatoes is hereby an officially sanctioned remembrance day. [1] 53%: Maribo - The one monster you don't want to see at 1% HP makes an (un)expected appearance. [1] 48%: AxeL - Welcomed back by pitch black slime (wait, what?) and a shrewd imp capitalizing on 7% shares. [1] 47%: Dieting Hippo - Forced to make every pellet count - only to avoid a box of shells! [1] 46%: head_cannon - I don't think the mancubi were the guardian. The real ones aren't called "hell knights" for no reason :^) [1] 38%: SilentD00mer - Rubs shoulders with the demons while falling. Gets chewed by demons after falling. [2] 38%: NaZa - Bury My Heart A Dimension Deeper. (intercepts overflow) [1] 33%: Ludi - Spends the entire run fighting for ammo only to die when the situation stabilized itself. There's irony in here, somewhere.... [2] 28%: NiGHTS108 - Everybody Loves Chaingunners™. [1] 7%: Pegleg - It's hard to see the difference between this run and Lazorical's. Two kills, you say? One shell was enough for both of them. [1] 7%: Lazorical - Loses a shootout next to a green armor. Oh, the irony... Prepared Leaderboard [#] SURVIVED (8:36): Maribo - When you look at a run of this type, it doesn't even look difficult. [#] SURVIVED (13:23): Doomy__Doom - What having guts to go through darkness does to a mf. Mad impressive. [#] SURVIVED (40:58): LadyMistDragon - "Still beat Bdubzzz's initial run!" Hehe, love the spirit. :^) What is the Doomworld Ironman League? The DWIronman League is a monthly competition in which participants aim to survive for as many levels as possible in the given map set, preferably in one sitting. Click the spoiler tag at the bottom of the post for a detailed list of rules. Players of all levels of ability are welcome. It could change the way you play Doom! In January 2023 the DWIronman League dies to Bury My Heart Knee Deep (-complevel 2) by @scwiba. The author describes it as "...a huge, vanilla, E1-style map for Doom II that takes cues from Metroidvania game progression. It's bursting with optional areas, secrets, and potential sequence breaks. You can follow the "intended" path or make your own way through. You can even complete the whole thing without picking up a single key!" The name itself alludes to E1, and keeping in mind there was an E1 Ironman run two months ago, this one made for the Doom II IWAD builds on it like a natural successor in terms of Ironman challenges. This is also the blindest I ever went into a DWIronman set before selecting it, having only nibbled in it for around 5 minutes, so... It has the potential to get fun is what I wanna say lmao. Good luck y'all. ZDoom 2.8.1. players might need to be wary of the map potentially not starting in that source port. Happened to me, not sure if it's a global issue yet. Newest GZDoom build works fine, though! Oh, also, we have a Discord server now!!! Join it here if you haven't already from the link above. It also contains a section for @Pegleg's Ironeagle. There will soon be a poll on getting rid of the Prepared Leaderboard and the future status of prepared runs. A small change was made to one of the rules. Accidentally restarting a level before a death exit takes you to the tally screen disqualified you beforehand, taking the time taken to reach the map with the death exit into account. From this month onward, however, it will simply stop your run immediately. You will still be registered as entering the next map (i.e. the one which you never entered), calculating how many seconds would have to had passed for the death exit to happen had you not restarted. Also, added an addendum: if you stream your run on Twitch, please highlight it so that it doesn't go missing in case someone's very late with the obituaries. Essential Info Doom II (doom2.wad). Compatibility level 2, or "Doom (strict)" for ZDoom derivative ports. I can't get it to run on ZDoom 2.8.1. atm though, so if you plan on playing the map with it, keep that in mind. Might be an issue on my end. prBoom+, DSDA, Eternity and GZDoom work fine though. 1 map. Due to the kill count being used for determining rankings this month, GZDoom users should use @ginc's .pk3, loaded last, to annull lost souls, and make sure that, in case of death, the kill count should be displayed as soon as possible. Author recommends using SOFTWARE RENDERING. Time estimate: 30-120 minutes. > Download Bury My Heart Knee Deep prboom-plus.exe -iwad doom2.wad -file kneedeep.wad -complevel 2 -skill 4 -record demo_name.lmp -warp Rules: Spoiler There are two competitions: Standard and Prepared: To compete successfully in the Standard competition: your first play of the selected WAD(s) constitutes your one and only attempt for the month. To compete successfully in the Prepared competition: your one and only attempt for the month is determined BY YOU immediately before play and may follow any prior number of active (playing the set) preparation that is strictly for practice/inspection purposes only. You cannot compete in the Standard competition after submitting a run to the Prepared competition. You may submit the first of your practice attempts to the Standard competition. UV only (excepting 1CC format), continuous recording. No pistol-starting each level. Demos (PrBoom+, GLBoom, Eternity or Chocolate), stream highlights and video recordings are the only accepted proofs. You must link to these runs in the thread. If you stream your run on Twitch, please highlight/save it so that it doesn't go missing in case someone's very late with the obituaries. No additional WADs may be loaded. No inspection of the WAD(s)'s content in an editor if you are submitting a Standard run, its category 3 included. No cheat codes and no features that result in behavior beyond what is possible in the intended source port (e.g. freelook, jumping and crouching in a boom set). This includes dynamic lights and brightmaps. If streaming or recording videos using an advanced source port with compatibility options, you must display these settings on-screen before your run. In ZDoom derivative ports, "Doom/Boom(strict)" will suffice. If you choose to stream/record your run for video rather than provide a demo and you die before completing a single level, either on the first map of a set OR because a single level was selected for the month, you must display the number of monsters killed/remaining in the level before you quit. You do not have to play the secret levels in order to register a complete run. However, a player who finishes the game having completed more secret levels than his/her competitors will rank higher than them. You cannot load a game having progressed past the save point. You cannot consult Doom Builder during your run to check for map details. If the recording of your official run is interrupted due to technical difficulties, you are not permitted a second attempt. Any surviving recording may be used to register a DNF result. Accidentally restarting a level before a death exit takes you to the tally screen will stop your run immediately. You will still be registered as entering the next map (i.e. the one which you never entered) using a calculation to figure out what the intermission time would have been. If you are competing in the Standard competition, you are required to affix one of three numbers to your run informing the League of your degree of familiarity with the map/set played. Note that your evaluation should only take into consideration the content covered in your run (e.g. if you remember only one part of a level in a set you haven't played before but never reach that level, you should list your run as a [1] instead of [2]): This is a blind run. If I have played or watched any of the level/set being played before, I cannot remember any details that would offer a reasonable advantage over truly blind players. * This is not a blind run. I have familiarity with the set - played the level/set before, or watched it being played, and can remember some details that would offer a reasonable advantage over blind players. This is not a blind run. While I have not outright played it, I've watched the level/set being played via stream, demo or video after it was announced as this month's challenge. * "Reasonable" in this instance asks you to consider whether the details in question are worth committing to memory. As in, you would thank the person who gave you this information with a straight face and not expect to be laughed at for being an utter berk. SCF Posted January 1, 2023 (edited) Category 1 Survived in 62:59 DWIL_23-01_kneedeep_SCF.zip Spoiler 64 secrets! I think I found maybe two that weren't non-hidden rocket unlocks. Speaking of which, letting the player use rockets to unlock goodies is a cool idea that fits well with the metroidvania concept. Too bad I had no spare rockets for most of the map, so I could only stare longingly at all those ammo boxes that were just out of reach, while I had to count every bullet. NiGHTS108 Posted January 2, 2023 Category 2 Beat this wad a few months ago with like 60% kills or smthn) Demo for GZDoom 4.10 Kill count: 266 Really lame run here, I honestly forgot how tight the early game of this map can be on health and really wasn't cautious enough going into the blue key hell area, paid the price with a Chaingunner shooting me in the back perfectly twice in a row which finished me off, hopefully February will be stronger for me :( NiGHTS108dwil-jan23.zip 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomy__Doom Posted January 2, 2023 Welp my blind demo died to DSDA failing to record it onto the hdd (which is to blame, it has had that one borked sector since pretty much day 1). Nothing to write home about, dead around 13:xx by hitscanners, stumbling around with no ammo. Might do a prepared run later (curiosity got the better of me, so I know too much for cat 2/3 at this point), although the route ideas are looking quite horrible so far. This offering is evil in so many ways. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Anima Zero Posted January 3, 2023 Cat 1, died with roughly 470/819 kills. Panicked a little in the red key area upon seeing a couple of the enemies in there. Tried to fight them off after grabbing the key cause I hate leaving enemies alive and GJ ANIMA'D it real good, heh. DWIronman_kneedeep_AnimaZero.zip 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

Doomy__Doom Posted January 3, 2023 (edited) Whatever the future of prepared runs holds, here's one. Category: UV Prepared Result: Survived, 13:23 Kills: 224/819 Demo: DWIronman_2023-01_prep_doomydoom.zip I'd say I came up with a solid route in terms of survival rate. Started off risky and wasn't looking good, so I opted to add elements of safety over speed to be one-take friendly. It's afun map to work with, despite certain layout choices being aggravating at times. Long commentary (cat 1 spoilers): Spoiler As far as I can tell, there are 2 ways to get to the "normal" (non-IoS) exit - you need either a yellow key, or a rocket launcher. Obtaining the latter is a major pain, as your option for one not hidden behind keyed doors is tube-deep in sludge, and obtaining a radsuit to survive the area is about as hard as obtaining a different rocket launcher in the first place. Ergo, the way I chose is to get the yellow key. While YK fight itself is free, getting there involves some effort. Step 1 is some back and forth to open a path to get past a bunch of hitscan (it wouldn't be E1-style otherwise). Once the second switch is revealed, a detour to grab green armor is made. In the outside area, the main order of business is to break into labs without losing armor/hp. So I walk into an imp fireball :) The idea is to lure monsters onto one side of the U-shaped stairs and slip past. It's a bit of a gamble on how many shotgunners venture outside and decimate you though. The next segment is technically optional, or would be in the context of grinding attempts which we can't do here. To get into Yellow Sector we have to snipe 3 switches on timers in a 0 light level room, so unless a doomgod is involved (although using a minimap to orient yourself it's quite realistic), a pair of light goggles is required. To get the goggles, we need to cross yet another 0 light area, plagued by hitscan and just don't fall lmao(tm). For safety and consistency, I opted to just clear the big area to avoid monsters flooding and putting me in a do or die situation. And even then some stray imps almost ruined everything. A much needed blue armor will come in handy later. Back to the labs, now on a goggle timer, I take a detour for safety health. Ammo box is not a detour, and as we find out a bit later basically saves the run. Shotgun spread plays tricks on me and I miss the buttons a ton of times. Wasting so much ammo, I am getting sweaty palms because those shells were supposed to be used to get the berserk secret. Yay for the random box of ammo we got earlier, the generosity of this map knows no bounds! There is barely enough pewpew material, although berserking revs is part of the plan. In practice runs I got sooo many pain chances. This time, barely any. Still took a 40 in my face like a pro. Yellow fight, a point of respite, last chance to catch your breath. After that, arm to the teeth and onto the finale. You can tell how much of a nervous wreck I am by that point, catching stray projectiles and almost getting cornered for no reason. My plan boils down to "kill arachnos on cue and make space". I slightly panic as Spiderdemon decides to stroll weirdly, but eventually plasma saves the day and destroys my hearing. I get why cosmetic mods are banned, but that doesn't make me enjoy hundreds of cells worth of continuos fire. Vince Vega Posted January 6, 2023 Cat I, survived in 66:27, I like the beginning of the DWIronYear }:з Kill count is sumfin around 530 IIRC, secrets is 14% ._. Style gets less and less aggressive in align with the difficulty curve and time counter -- you may want to not die to a random rev after 40 minutes ingame, that's not a way I'd prefer to waste my life :D Lost myself a couple times and also ran out of ammo once, but sorta recovered after revisiting some areas I've been to previously (took some minutes tho). Choked a bit on the red key hangout, but at some point felt like my socialization meter is saturated enough, thus simply ran away :D The gameplay of the map is not my cup of absinthe, neither E1 in general, so can't say anything meaningful here. For the fans I guess? Ah, one thing: the idea of rockets as money/points for "buying" stuff -- is BLOODY awesome! Esp given that you've got some limited amount and have to choose stuff wisely. dvvkneed.zip @NaZa, I've just read your 2022 recap and oh boy, thanks a megaton for the words you gingerbread ironman ^.^ As you can see, I'm trying hard to prove I deserve them :D That my miss of the March installation (Syringe) is so dumb. Crusader No Regret Posted January 12, 2023 Type 2. I played the map all the wa through before back when it was announced. But it was an older version and I was on HMP and never tried UV so I don't know if my foreknowledge helps much. I remember the normal key order, the locations to unlock radsuits and light amps, the keyless route (doing it is a whole other matter), and vague recollections of the first two key battlefields. Not much else though. Attempt lasted longer than I thought it would. A 3-hour marathon and only 484 kills to show for it, Snailville. Whatever. I was prepared to lose it in the scuffle for the blue key and did come perilously close, winning at 5 health. (as well as dropping dangerously low at least once before even reaching the "boss battle." Not out of danger with key successfully acquired but I managed to claw my way back. No such clutch moment at the red key "boss fight" though, healthy to dead in an instant. Spoiler I remembered a cyberdemon being a factor at the red key but wasn't prepared for two of them. Splattered scrambling for a more defensible location. dsda-doom -complevel 2 Feel this is a particularly good choice for Ironman as the built-in skips allow for some very fast finishes for the daring. dwiron_kneedeep_cnr.zip 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
SleepyVelvet Posted January 12, 2023 Dead: Map01 Category: 2 (I thought it was blind but apparently I played up to the blue key area once) Kills: 446/819 Time of Death: 37:58 Cmd: dsda-doom -file .\kneedeep.wad -complevel 2 -shorttics -skill 4 -record noisy_kneedeep_ironman.lmp Demo: noisy_kneedeep_ironman.zip This style of map rocks for this type of competition, in my opinion. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Suitepee Posted January 12, 2023 https://youtu.be/aqsK0YN9PSo Category 1 run. Survived in 1:40:09 with 95% monsters killed (don't have exact amount). What a way to start 2023 this was! Several close calls throughout this blind run, and I had to recover from some bad mistakes, but made it in the end. Quite a fun map. 7 Quote Share this post Link to post
NaZa Posted January 14, 2023 Updated boards. Glad to see @marver0PS back... and, of course, huge congratulations to both @Suitepee and @Crusader No Regret for not only doing really well for the opening challenge, but also how they bounced back from last year's less than favourable results. CNR especially looking at last month - never say never! 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

Maribo Posted January 15, 2023 (edited) Category: Prepared Survived in 8:36.40 Spoiler Credit goes to @Doomy__Doom for showing the keyless route in a demo earlier in the thread. I think it's personally a lot more survivable than it looks at first, but maybe that's the speedrunner in me, lol. There's definitely a couple of bits in this where you can Just Die if a couple of shotgunners double 45 you, but I think that if you jog through this route a couple of times and learn the spots where you'll be at <50 health, you'll know where to slow down and be a bit more careful. dwiron_bmhkd_prep_mari.zip Edited January 15, 2023 by Maribo 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

dt_ Posted January 21, 2023 (edited) I lived! Blind run (approx 1:45) https://www.dropbox.com/s/0u7ywqfhvn3r0it/dtkneedeep.lmp?dl=1 Couple of incredibly lucky and intense moments, reached the exit, and considered exploring further, but realised I was doing an IronMan, and my shoulder was starting to hurt, so I left. NaZa Posted January 26, 2023 Small bump to remind there's 5 more days to get your run in... ...along with an announcement - the first guest host of this year will be @NoisyVelvet, organizing the next month's challenge! 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
