Standard Leaderboard

    1. [1] SURVIVED (2:51:05): Suitepee - Clawing through castles, sea, the East and the West, we have our first only victor of this Ilya quest.

    2. [1] Map 09: LadyMistDragon - Tried taking a quick cabin nap after dodging a boney thrall, but instead of a soft pillow, landed on a spikey ball. :)

    3. [1] Map 09: pseudonaut - Threading between pillars, it should've blocked their stare, but the viles decided to cheat, and still lit 'em aflare.

    4. [1.5] Map 09: dt_ - Amongst fallen ship is - lies this player's wishes, devoured by a Titanic sized school of hungry caco-fishes.

    5. [1] Map 09: head_cannon - Viles ambushing in from too many sides to untangle, maybe this ambush is the real "Bermuda Triangle".

    6. [1] Map 07: BoxY - Brilliant performance with a tragic end in the sea.  BoxY was boxed in by pit spectres instantly.

    7. [1] Map 07: Maribo - has become Marine-bio, after saying to surprise sea-spiders, "oh hi, oh?!"

    8. [1] Map 06: Bdubzzz -               :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)

  13. [1] Map 06: ginc -                     :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)

  14. [1] Map 06: SCF - Boxed in by a specter, so SCF boxed it back, but was sniped dead next to the exit, and is now a fish snack.

  22. [1] Map 05: SuyaSS - After challenging with the first vile and all, ducked quickly behind cover but not fully behind wall.

  23. [1] Map 05: Helm - After triumph over the first vile and all, tripped fatally down the waterfall.

  24. [3] Map 04: NoisyVelvet - Because it's a 'prepared' run I tried to go fast, but according to the Big Tower Brawl, I would not last.

  25. [1] Map 04: SilentD00mer - Got chewed up by a pinkie while slammed into the wall, but was finished off by a rev-rocket in this Big Tower Brawl.

  26. [1] Map 04: Beginner - Never below half without breaking a sweat, was evaporated instantly by a rev-rocket-ball, Big-Tower-Brawl insta-kill threat.

  27. [1] Map 04: Crusader No Regret - In the BTB, slow and steady wins the race, but fled too fast and died outside from a shotgunner to the face.

  28. [1] Map 03: Pegleg - After limping up to the blue key door, was ambushed by plasma and then peppered some more.

  29. [1] Map 02: Brainfreezzzzz - The sea-spiders' stellar cousin, traded final blows with the cellar-spider, both with guts wide open.

What is the Doomworld Ironman League?

The DWIronman League is a monthly competition in which participants aim to survive for as many levels as possible in the given map set, preferably in one sitting. Click the spoiler tag at the bottom of the post for a detailed list of rules. Players of all levels of ability are welcome. It could change the way you play Doom!

In February 2023 the DWIronman League dies to Lazarevenant (13 map WIP Demo) (-complevel 2) created by Joe-Ilya: "I am working on a limit-removing full megawad which will have 6 episodes consisting of 5 maps each, each episode will use a different DBP theme, so far I have completed 13 maps in a single month!"  This project of his is currently in a functional demo state, and has four out of six target episodes implemented at least partially.  They are based on the following mapsets: Lilywhite Lilith, Aquatic Wonder, Japanese Valentines, and The Magnificent Five.  I did some screening for potential NSFW material due to the presence of Japanese Valentines inspired maps, but the most lewd thing I found is actually a pixilated PG-13 pinup portrait in the westerned episode on Map31.  Though good luck making it that far.  This set starts heating up after only a couple maps.  The author isn't shy of using tricks, traps, tight-ammo, and otherwise tough combat.

Essential Info

  • Doom II: Hell on Earth. (doom2.wad)
  • Compatibility level 2, or "Doom (strict)" for ZDoom derivative ports.
  • 13 main levels (17 maps: 13-15 are skip maps with insta-death-exits which bring you to 31.  Maps 5,10, and 12 have death exits as well to mark the end of respective episodes).
    • Survival is the completion of Map31.
  • Time estimate: 1-4 hours (might get amended)
  • Warning: prB+ 2.5.1.4 can crash on MAP05, something related to music playback for that map. (per NaZa's post)

Rules:

  • There are two competitions: Standard and Prepared:
    • To compete successfully in the Standard competition: your first play of the selected WAD(s) constitutes your one and only attempt for the month.
    • To compete successfully in the Prepared competition: your one and only attempt for the month is determined BY YOU immediately before play and may follow any prior number of active (playing the set) preparation that is strictly for practice/inspection purposes only. You cannot compete in the Standard competition after submitting a run to the Prepared competition. You may submit the first of your practice attempts to the Standard competition.
  • UV only (excepting 1CC format), continuous recording. No pistol-starting each level.
  • Demos (PrBoom+, GLBoom, Eternity or Chocolate), stream highlights and video recordings are the only accepted proofs. You must link to these runs in the thread.
    • If you stream your run on Twitch, please highlight/save it so that it doesn't go missing in case someone's very late with the obituaries.
  • No additional WADs may be loaded.
  • No inspection of the WAD(s)'s content in an editor if you are submitting a Standard run, its category 3 included.
  • No cheat codes and no features that result in behavior beyond what is possible in the intended source port (e.g. freelook, jumping and crouching in a boom set). This includes dynamic lights and brightmaps. If streaming or recording videos using an advanced source port with compatibility options, you must display these settings on-screen before your run. In ZDoom derivative ports, "Doom/Boom(strict)" will suffice.
  • If you choose to stream/record your run for video rather than provide a demo and you die before completing a single level, either on the first map of a set OR because a single level was selected for the month, you must display the number of monsters killed/remaining in the level before you quit.
  • You do not have to play the secret levels in order to register a complete run. However, a player who finishes the game having completed more secret levels than his/her competitors will rank higher than them.
  • You cannot load a game having progressed past the save point.
  • You cannot consult Doom Builder during your run to check for map details.
  • If the recording of your official run is interrupted due to technical difficulties, you are not permitted a second attempt. Any surviving recording may be used to register a DNF result.
Accidentally restarting a level before a death exit takes you to the tally screen will stop your run immediately. You will still be registered as entering the next map (i.e. the one which you never entered) using a calculation to figure out what the intermission time would have been.
  • A small change was made to one of the rules since January 2023.  Beforehand, accidentally restarting a level before a death exit takes you to the tally screen disqualified you, taking the time taken to reach the map with the death exit into account. From January 2023 onward, however, it will simply stop your run immediately. You will still be registered as entering the next map (i.e. the one which you never entered), calculating how many seconds would have to had passed for the death exit to happen had you not restarted.
    • Also, added an addendum: if you stream your run on Twitch, please highlight it so that it doesn't go missing in case someone's very late with the obituaries.
  • If you are competing in the Standard competition, you are required to affix one of three numbers to your run informing the League of your degree of familiarity with the map/set played. Note that your evaluation should only take into consideration the content covered in your run (e.g. if you remember only one part of a level in a set you haven't played before but never reach that level, you should list your run as a [1] instead of [2]):

    1. This is a blind run. If I have played or watched any of the level/set being played before, I cannot remember any details that would offer a reasonable advantage over truly blind players. *
    2. This is not a blind run. I have familiarity with the set - played the level/set before, or watched it being played, and can remember some details that would offer a reasonable advantage over blind players.
    3. This is not a blind run. While I have not outright played it, I've watched the level/set being played via stream, demo or video after it was announced as this month's challenge.

Spoiler

Episode opening maps are always surprisingly treacherous, with no armor and limited resources. Played carelessly in map 6, then got blindsided by a spectre chasing me into a narrow corridor. Miraculously survived when a single non-berserk punch was enough to finish it off, only to get taken out by a zombie I didn't notice.

Warning: prB+ 2.5.1.4 seems to consistently crash upon loading MAP05, at least on my end.

Was doing brilliantly (no false modesty), then prB+ crashed entering MAP05. That's what I get for being stubborn two months in a row (as in emulating overflows and using prB+, and not DSDA)

Category 1, DNF/crash on MAP05. Best part is, prB+ didn't record me entering MAP05, so the end screen's the last part of the demo. Convenient, I guess...

Sorry to hear.  Added warning to OP.  It did work for me in 2.5.1.3 and whatever setup I have there, funny enough.  I might look into it later.

A'ight, guess it indeed was something on my end that makes the map crash. I've since pinpointed the issue to something regarding music playback because playing it with -nomusic on yielded no crashes. Sorry for the inconvenience, I'll look more into what causes it.

EDIT: Deleting that particular track from the WAD made it not crash as well, so I've found the root cause, but not exactly what is it that makes it crash.

Looks like the demo breaks or instantly quits out.  Do you have another demo file alongside it by with a full run by any chance, or did the run get eaten?  As it is, I'll have to disqualify the run for Category 1 & 2 because I can't verify it.  Or, at least your run will have an asterisk next to it for this month.

That's what I get by trying to record a demo with doom launcher instead with command line, once. It's no worries for the disqualification.

edit: I do have some video backup but it's not captured from the beginning of the run, but just for the sake of verity.

Cause of Death:

I was done-in by the main big fight on Map 04 that I thought would do most people in.  I am delighted to see Map 06 be the one to claim people instead, though.

Category 1 run, survived in 2:51:05.

For the first time in my Ironman League history (having played every single one since it's jenesis in 2016), I have survived back-to-back Ironmans! And by god did I have several close calls in this run, particularly on the Market Place map.

I played with -nomusic just in case, although I figured it wouldn't have been an issue if it's a problem that doesn't appear until Map 05. I also took as long to get part way through Map 03 as it took most people to get twice as far, but this shouldn't surprise anyone who takes a casual look at my Ironman history.

Overall, I thought this was a nice-looking mapset. There were little details here and there, which we nice touches. The progression was good, and the ammo and health were plentiful enough that I never felt starved. There were a couple sneaky ambushes, one of which almost did me in. The stained glass being breakable was neat, and I appreciated communicating to the player that the glass was breakable by showing one that was broken, but unreachable. I think strafe running might have been required to get out at the end of Map 02, and I don't enjoy mandatory strafe running because I'm bad at it, but that's a small quibble that really didn't distract from the mapset as a whole. This mapset was rather enjoyable, and I had a good time playing it. Good DWIL selection @NoisyVelvet.

Ohhh, so that's what was going on there. I survived past those, but apparently it was through sheer luck since I had no clue until I saw your post.

Spoiler

I assumed they were just regular explosive barrels. When I got to the mine corridor, I thought there might be some mechanic that blows them up if you take too long, so I rushed through and just happened not to touch any of them. And after seeing all the Map6 obituaries, I figured I must've been right.

Proximity mines make a lot more sense. No wonder they tripped up many unexpecting players.

@Pegleg - good demo.  I'm glad you made it out of the starting cell.

If someone does indeed accidentally softlocks themselves there, please upload the demo.  There's no shame in it, but even if you feel so, it needs to be recorded into Ironman history.
