Welcome to PUSS 26, Clandestine Castle Crashing TWO! The Sequel to Clandestine Castle Crashing One! We're getting itchy to find some secrets we left behind in medieval times, so we've ramshackled together a time machine made out of GSTONE and magic to warp us back to the good old days when people would shit in a bucket and then hyuck it into the cobblstone street below! You heard that right! Cobblestone! Those barbarians hadn't even invented pavement yet! Disgusting! Thankfully shotguns and demons existed back in the year 666. I just googled it and it turns out that was 400 years before the medieval era. Humbug! Regardless, you're gonna be using some shotguns to rip through castles created with a resource pack that I made using a bunch of textures from other resource packs. Call it a resource pack's resource pack. I let @Danlex out of the PUSS dungeon in exchange for finding some nice dehacked demons to use for this project, so expect to see some exciting changes in builder! YE HAVETH HOURS OF SEVEN TO SEQUESTER SECTORS INTO A MAP! - You have seven hours to make the general layout of your level and to check all of the rules required for the map. Detailing the map and monster/thing placement are outside of the main timer. THOU MUST MAKETH A MAP CASTLE! That means crenellations! Big walls! Towers! Bricks! Peasantry! The castle can be the whole of the map or a key focal point in your medieval village. Please keep in mind the size of your level, don't want too many epic scaled gauntlet maps. No techbases either. There's also a loose story that you're playing as an ancient ancestor of the Blaskowicz family tree (not the alien one) named Knight Guy. Essentially he's going around crashing castles looking for something... what that something is is up for you to decide! I don't think he really cares about anything other than killing demons though... Thine map must haveth a quantity of secrets that I hereby declare to be no less than the number TEN! - These have to be earned secrets. No mandatory secret sectors on the exit staircase. Your secrets must be found and earned. The more expansive and incidental, the greater. Even better, there is no maximum to how many secrets you hide in the map. Either way, every secret must be able to be found. But that doesn’t mean they need to be easy to find. Some further tips: Make sure to get creative with your secrets. A secret powersphere behind a false wall is okay, but a secret passageway within the castle walls that takes you to a secret area full of goodies (and a fight) is much better. Really try to sell the mysterious castle aesthetic. Hidden passage ways will earn you a lot of brownie points with me. Thine musn’t secrete thoust’ve progression! - The secrets of your map MUST be non-mandatory. Don’t hide your exit key behind an arch-vile jump into a fake wall in a secret slaughter arena. MAPS WILL BE CONSTRUCTED-ETH IN DOOM 2 BOOM FORMAT! TARGET PORT PRBOOM COMPLEVEL 9 HUZZAH! TEST ACCORDINGLY HUZZAH! I'll also ask that you include CO-OP starts and Difficulty Settings. RESOURCE USAGE IS REQUIRED. I'LL PUT YOU IN THE PILLORY IF YOU DON'T! CLICK THIS LINK RIGHT HERE TO DOWNLOAD! I may update it from time to time to add textures. If you have any requests (within reason), shoot them my way. **OPTIONAL** - Add a secret exit to your map: Included with this secret exit, included an additional (secret) map. This additional map has a timer of 1 hour and a MAXIMUM of 5 secrets (no secret exit included!) Rules for speedmapping maps for this project are the same for standard submissions. MAPS ARE DUE (on my birthday) ON APRIL 27TH 2023 at 11:59 PM NEXT MONTH! - Your mapping time can be nonconsecutive. - Your timer will only go down when you are mapping or playtesting. Speedmaps will be under the honor rule. Neither you nor I can prove if a map went over the time limit or not, but trained eyes can see what is and is not a speedmap. If you cheat, people will notice. - Any time in Slade used to give a custom sky, midi, etc. is outside of your mapping time. - I would recommend spending some time looking over the texture pack before you begin mapping, so that you don’t waste time scrolling. - Once your time is up, if you haven’t beaten your map, please spend time to verify that your level is beatable. We call this the BluePineapple rule because I always break it. **AFTER YOUR TIME LIMIT IS UP:** The point of the time limit is to put a fire under your seat to force you to finish the map. The intention isn't really to 'challenge' you. The scope for PUSS projects is that I want as many people to make the best thing they can with interesting themes and restrictions. I want you to finish the layout of your level, get a general feel for what the gameplay is gonna be, and get a rough to perhaps imagined level of what the visuals will look like in the allotted time limit. You can spend any amount of time you want thereafter refining what you've sent to me. - Map submissions must include a builder screenshot of the layout you came up with after 7 hours and then a screenshot of the map you refined from it. I'm OK with you submitting a map before you refine it if you need feedback/suggestions. Again, the post 7 hour map timer is to prevent you from adding major gameplay arenas, new rooms, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Adding background details the player won't access is fine but generally speaking the closer you stick to the layout the more comfortable I am. This screenshot from @Blexor's PUSS 22 map is an incredible example of this screenshot rule: - There is no cap to how many maps you can submit to these events. Whoever submits the most will be able to become king of the server. Beats getting a sword from the water lady. Any bug fixing/map changes are due to me 1 week after I upload the final playthrough video of the last submission. No deadline was mentioned, so does that mean the end of April? Keycards would look a little out of place, wouldn't they? Has anyone made sprites for suitable-looking keys? I will work on an alternative to replace the keycards though. Not that it's a problem, mind. More importantly, though, this sounds incredibly awesome. I do love me some castles, and medieval castles no less so. I'll definitely have to contribute something to this (which should hopefully make up for the fact that I never finished that map for Lunacy). About the keys: I was actually thinking of making some older-style key sprites for a solo wad I had planned. I'm not an accomplished spriter by any means but I've done small-scale stuff before, and wanted to try making something that wasn't as complicated as, say, monster sprites. All this is to say that I could try making those key sprites sooner rather than later, and if they turn out to be up to the project standard, I'd be more than happy to see them used here. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Stabbey Posted March 11, 2023 (edited) I'm doing some testing of Boom line action 244. So far the test looks promising. If I do it right, I can have the players start out in a tower which will appear to be the tower in the main map, go down a good-sized spiral staircase, and come out inside the castle and the map should show that the bottom of the tower will appear to be in the same place on the map as the top of the tower. EDIT: No, that's not reasonable to do given how far you can see ahead. I can two of balcony, top room, and ground in the same place, but not all three. Okay. But hmmm... will I allow the player to look back up at the tower from the ground level, and would that therefore cause skybox problems with the lowered sky blocking the tower? That might be fine. *** EDIT 2: I'm not sure I'll be able to come up with a map for this. Lots of time provided, sure, but I just don't have enough inspiration. I'm using an older version of the resource pack, as I started making the map before the resource pack was updated This will most likely be my only map for this project. I'm not in the best of headspaces at the moment, and I want to take care of myself more than ever. Mapping is a time consuming hobby so I want to keep it at a minimum for now. I know that the rules specifically state that the secret level should NOT have another secret exit, but it's pretty important for me thematically to have that last third one, so I would like to humbly request to be allowed to have this nesting doll of secret levels. Super secret level was speedmapped in under 30 mins and is absolutely tiny, can probably be beaten in under a minute or so. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
