[Boom] Escape from Slime City & HOTFIX93 - Now on IdGames!

Recommended Posts

Welp... I know what I'm playing after work this evening! Hahaha!

Screenies look cool. I really dug your past couple of maps, so if they're anything to go by these two will be dope as well!

Your stuff strikes that nice Build-esque balance of fun gameplay with slick aesthetics which is totally my jam. :)

Slime City seems like a spiritual successor to Old Bean Factory and the concept of being shrunk down in Doomguy's PC for Hotfix93 (love the name) is such a rad concept, haha!

I don't even mind if they're on the cruisier side - sometimes it's nice to just marinate in the atmosphere of the map and just have fun blastin' away! Cheers for sharing and I hope to see more stuff from you (a multi-map set would be awesome in your style) even if you are super busy atm!

Slime City is just as terrific as I remember it when you had me playtest the beta version and this released version is perfect. Aside from the somewhat broken start that could use a tweak, this new map, Hotfix93, is gorgeous. I really love your aptitude for creating urban slums dripping with verisimilitude, but can also take us somewhere more fantastic like shrinking to the size of a flea and crawling around a dusty, 30-year-old computer. You're fast becoming one of my new favourite mappers, fam. I cannot wait to see what you create next! Resplendent work, truly.

@Fabricator @TheShep Thank you guys for your responses, it's nice to know people look forward to my work! :)
(If you haven't played through 'em yet, check to see if you want to grab the updated versions!)

@Biodegradable
I appreciate your new playthrough video, I've made a handful of changes as a result of it, improving design decisions and hopefully filling out the experience a bit more! Thanks homie! :)

Played through old and new versions of both maps, of the two I personally prefer Slime Sity. I would't say Hotfix is bad, death animations are cool, some touches like doomcute memory card(?) and ending were pretty cool, final fight was also nice, but from the gameplay perspective shotgunning mid-tiers is something I absolutely hate in Doom. I mean, I managed to find only 1 of 4 secrets, and one of them seem to be early-on rocket-launcher, that could porbably make a map feel different...But I'm too stupid to understand how to get it, so it is what it is :)

Slime city is really cool, polluted city with memorable areas, arcade is awesome, bowling is sweet, oh and don't forget that Duke refernce in the beginning of the map. Here I actually managed to find all secrets, kill all monsters and find all Doogmuy-dolls

Spoiler

I like some changes in the new version of the map, like slime imps making earlier appearence in arcade is nice, additional archvile in bowling makes it more spicy(though I have no idea why baron teleports in and than out now, lol). Striking down all the bowling pines kinda asks for being a secret, though I'm not a mapper and have no idea if you can make something like this a trigger for opening a secret.

Not a big fan of final fight changes though. I mean I get that you want to make it hardest fight in the wad, before the update hardest part was probably archie in the arcade, and it's weird to have toughest fight in the middle... But the way final fight plays out now is kinda pain in the ass, I specifically mean the moment when you open the wharehouse door and a lot of mid tier monsters teleport in. Right now my strategy for this fight is to run to a small room near the enter to an area and super-shotgun everyone while hiding in the doors. It's is effective but kinda boring. I would love to have a proper fight, but there are a lot of monsters and your space is kinda limited, slime hurts like a bitch, so I think probably giving a player a hazard suit(and maybe some additional rockets) can make this fight more dynamic and fun.

All this is obviously just my opinion, and I am a pretty casual palyer and I don't won't to sound like a prick who tells a mapper how to make his maps, you do you, just my thoughts :)

Overall I really enjoyed this, best maps I played this week, Slime city goes straight to my ''top-tier single players maps'' folder, while Hotfix goes to ''good maps''.

My path to here starts from "Share Your Sprites!" -thread. I started wondering "what slime city".

Really cool detailing. Bowling pins and other interactivity were so nice. Collecting DoomDolls was a nice touch also. These things bring level more alive, lets you think what more there is to find.

Also played HOTFIX93 which was a fantastingly set up. Brought back some memories, heh. Wondering if you go to the computer without socks & pants. Never been in a computer so maybe that is how it needs to be done.

Haven't been playing much lately so fights felt diffucult, huh. (HMP) Many things made me think how this is done in Boom (no dehacked experience).

These need more attention, good job!

Played through them both. They were both fantastic! Slime City was another great urban map like The Old Bean Factory, but with a few new touches. Very nices texturing and environmental design. I love all the Doomcute touches! I was not expecting the arcade fight to be that intense with the archie and slime imps, but it is very doable. I found all the secrets and I think all the Doomguy dolls. Does getting them all do anything? If so, then maybe I didn't get them all, lol.

HOTFIX was definitely unexpected! Much different setting, though it was really cool. Another great map in terms of visual design. I absolutely love the new death animations. It really turns the demons into viruses by having them blip out of existence when they die. And it perfectly sets up the twist with the archies at the end. The cyber design of the archie and its attack is cool,

Spoiler

but I did not expect it to revive the demons since they kinda disappear. I guess their corpses are still there, just invisible since they've been "deleted".

Both maps were fun! I think I like HOTFIX a little more, since the setting is different, and the death animations are a cool touch.

I've got to say Escape is one of the best urban maps I've ever seen! Its exactly the kind of grungy, filthy, dirty place I'd expect a city to look like in Doom!

(also i see you using my dry-erase board texture ;))

hi! just finished playing both in [uv]. imo [hotfix93] was bordering sadistic due to the very limited ammo in the final battle area (the one with a pillar in the middle with 4 switches). survived the map via pure luck: having left with only 15 bullets with no berserk/chainsaw, after waves upon waves of monsters including archies. no, i did not get the rocket launcher nor the plasma gun (i'm terrible at finding secrets). putting a box of shells in the last battle area would be nice though, at least to balance off the resurrected monsters by the archies :p

anyway, liked the 2 maps a lot - gorgeous detailed aesthetics! with loads of doomcutes! intense battles! so, if it is not too troublesome on your end, hope you could make more maps like these! thanks :)

These are fun and super cute, lots of great stuff in both, but especially Slime City. I loved the road block sign, the way you get the rocket launcher, and all the different health bonus food pickups.

Lots of replies :O
I was gonna make a comment when these wads made it through idgames as not to double-post on my own thread, but it looks like a few more days of waiting so here goes :)

@John Rain
Thank you very much for your feedback, I considered it when making a few more changes before wrapping these wads up for idgames. Cheers!

@Custom Longplay
Aye nice playthroughs, I'm glad nothing major seemed to have broken with all those mods you had packed in there, the outdoor rain and mood-change in Slime City was a nice touch.

@Jaska
I'm really glad you liked 'em, Jaska! I tried to make these wads' difficulty a bit spicier than my previous stuff as I would often get comments about the difficulty being too easy. Still learning how to balance difficulty vs interesting encounters.

@TJG1289
I'm happy that you enjoyed these! Unfortunately, I didn't make the dolls do anything aside from being the only items being counted, my goal for them was to make 100% Kills/Items/Secrets a more reasonable and fun thing to do. I'll probably continue doing this collectible gimmick moving forward with other maps I make. I'm happy you like the death animations, they took a bit of time to hack together :P.

@YouAreTheDemons
I think I managed to scratch the urban map itch for a little while, heh. I'm glad you think I did it alright :P I remember I knew exactly what to do with that dry-erase board as soon as you posted it! I may not make a pack myself, but I'd be more than happy for people to pick apart my wad for its resources if they feel the need to make a pack. Thanks so much :)

@rita remton
Hey, thanks for your feedback! The ammo does get a bit tight near the end, sorry bout that. If I was a bit smarter, I would have had an additional cache of ammo and health appear midway through that switch gauntlet. Hopefully, I'll be able to make a few more maps like these indeed, they take more time to make than I'd care to admit lol

@Not Jabba
Hurray! I'm glad somebody noticed the road block sign! Cheers, I'm glad you found these fun :)

Almost missed this double feature, I liked a lot that factory bean map and had this one on my list.

As expected 1st one has that previously seen urban style which I love, is short, sweet and nicely detailed.

Hotfix on the other hand is a harder map ambiented inside the computer domains, full or circuits and other components.

Enjoyed both maps, great work!

A little video of Hotfix93:

HOTFIX is a really fun map!  Loved the whole crawling-through-a-broken-computer aesthetic of it.  The difficulty seems pretty fun to me, it's challenging, and punishes mistakes and carelessness, but it's not unfair or anything.

I know it's too late, but Gzdoom reports this during startup if you load Slime City:

Editor number 333 defined twice for classes 'DoomDoll' and 'Deh_Actor_183'

And these when you start the map:

Line 10414 has no first side.
Line 11928 has no first side.
Line 11929 has no first side.
Unknown middle texture 'AQSUPP1-' on second side of linedef 10842
Line 10414's right edge is unconnected
Line 11929's right edge is unconnected

The map plays fine, though.

@Soulless I’m happy you enjoyed them. It appears you have an older version of HOTFIX93, might explain why it’s harder. Thanks for your playthrough! :)

@ShallowB Excellent video, I appreciated your reading of the intertext, lol. I am happy you found the map fun! Check out the other one! ;)

@horselessheadsman

I’m glad you appreciate them, took more time than I’d care to admit to make :P. You’re right, the pistol is like the tiniest bit faster in Slime City, it was my first time messing with dehacked so there are a few experiments that kinda… remained, including the incremental pistol speed increase.

@Fly In The Lotion

Woops! Hope you managed to get some rest that evening lol

@Caleb13 Yeah those errors aren’t a concern to me, there are some lines that exist only for scrolling floors, GZdoom’s version of the doomdoll works fine although I’d be interested in how to make GZdoom stop nagging about it. Missing texture isn’t visible afaik. Thanks very much for the report though!

People say Build Engine is more suited to do urban enviroments, but your maps say otherwise. Good stuff.

I just played both and they are absolute masterpieces.

The slime city is a well designed city map and the main tech level inside a computer is also very nicely done.

The attention to detail in both wads is amazing.

Finally got around to it, and it's great! Loved the Duke Nukemness of it.  The city looks like John Carpenter made a Chex Quest movie.

I think my favorite bit is the bowling pins.  The sound of those things getting smacked by a rocket is hella satisfying!

Thanks everyone for the further replies and plays. I’ve been so busy with school lately and it’s been cool to return to this thread and know people are enjoying these.

@ShallowB

I’m so happy you picked up on some of my little secret jokes.

Spoiler

Like the skeleton(s) in the closet and the Lebowski reference in the bowling alley!

It’s been rewarding to see them some of them land ;)

Cheers all again, makes my day.

Only played Slime City so far, but I popped hard when I found the arcade you were working on way back when. This map is an utter treasure trove of detail, imagination and Build-realism, and the only possible downside is that there's not a full episode of its particular brand of magic.

I'm not a video-editing-type, but this absolutely deserves an MST3K-style riff...

Hey kwc, just played through these as well as Old Bean Factory, amazing maps! In a previous reply you said "they take more time to make than I'd care to admit" but just looking at the amount of visual detail you've got in here it's obvious that they took an immense amount of work, and that you really paid attention to every single thing. They were all on the easy side (Slime City had a few moments that were tougher), but I think that's fine, there were enough engaging moments anyhow. Looking forward to the next ones!
