I’ve just plunged my green spindly fingers into this hoomahn’s brain and have started using it as a vessel to type messages to you… FROM OUTER SPACE! I’ve even gotten one of my other alien pals to hijack some bear to co-lead this INVASION FROM THE VASTNESS OF... OUTER SPACE! THE HORROR! THE HORROR! We’re coming for your leaders and bureaucracies you filthy Hoomahns! Right after we take over this here speedmapping series that is. We’re gonna start our invasion of your pathetic world by commandeering this so-called “Tricking and Tearing” sub-series you Hoo-Mahns have mapped for once or thrice before and we’re going to transmogrify it the only way we (the aliens) know how! AT WARPSPEED! Unlike you disgusting Hoo-Mahns who require petulant things such as gasoline and sexual validation, we (special thanks to @Egregor, @Lina, @muumi, @Peccatum Mihzamiz, @LGmaire, anyone I missed) aliens were able to provide for ourselves a handsome resource pack with which we can conquer worlds! Including yours! See how pitiful and dull all of your earthly browns and greens are in contrast to our vibrant dark pinks and bright pinks? Being the naturalists that we are, there are a few different species of cow in the pack (right cow and left cow) in addition to an exploding "Evil Cow!" We’ve even replaced your precious Commander Keen with one of our spawnling’s eggs (which will be important for gameplay gimmickry). Since you’re gonna get comfortable with these Ancient Alien textures you might as well get comfortable with these new rules your new masters are putting in place. 6 Hour Map Timer - You have 6 hours to brush out the layout and map design of your level. I’ll accept detailing overhauls after you post your level, but I won’t accept startan boxes and super barebones initial submissions that you intend to detail later. At 6 hours you should have a pretty good idea of what your final level should look like, but changes may come whether they may be in visuals or in balancing (see PUSS mapping guidelines below) Format Information: We’re working in Boom format with Doom 2. That means your level must be beatable without jumping/crouching and mouselook disabled. Make sure that your level works in PRBoom comp-level 9. INVASION! - This month’s theme is ALIEN INVASION! Aesthetically, your level must focus on the contrasting texture sets of the eclectic Earthy textures, comprised of textures from Redneck Rampage, Blood, Lost Civilization and more, against Skillsaw’s famous Ancient Aliens texture pack. The mapset will take place in good ‘ole fashioned small-town USA where farmer Joe and his buddies who work at the nearby diner and gas station live. Make great use of the wilderness textures to help sell the next rule… THE HORROR! THE HORROR! - Given it’s the Halloween month, the gameplay and ‘mapfeel’ of your map should evoke more of an atmospheric and creepy vibe. Maps must be set at night or at sunset with lots of (BOO!) surprise enemies and a general atmosphere of dread. Given too we have a bunch of kooky alien textures, let the rule above about contrasting map elements allow you to homage corny alien movies from the 60s with their cardboard sets and puppet stringed man-eaters. I’ll also ask that you pick an appropriate midi too. EGGS! The objective of your map must be to purge the infestation. How? Commander keen is now an egg! Your map must have at minimum two Keen Eggs, and something within your map must have a door (could be on a voodoo track) with tag 666 attached to it that you need to kill all of the keen-eggs in order to progress. Hard 100 monster limit. Ooh! What a doozy! There’s a lot you can do without that many enemies. This is also a ‘no slaughter’ rule. Survival horror! Make health/ammo a commodity the player has to search for. Don’t necessarily starve them of ammo, but be very conscious about resource placement in that players are gonna be worried about the alien shotgunner around the corner. Will be something I’ll help you iron out during playtesting. Co-Op Starts are mandatory. Difficulty settings will also be mandatory. However, a caveat is that I’ll allow you to submit a level without difficulty settings provided that you send a version with them later. I’ll also add that balancing a level’s difficulty settings won’t knock your timer down. OPTIONAL - Build a UFO that you can board! OPTIONAL - Non Linear level! Since you have to root out an infestation, might as well make the player work for it and look for them eggs eh? Try placing a bunch of branching paths the player has to take in order to complete their task. Even better if it loops back in on itself, allowing for multiple different ways to beat the level. Maps are due to Death Bear and I either in this thread or my discord on Sunday October 29th 2023 at 11:59 PM EST. Your mapping time can be nonconsecutive. Your timer will only go down when you are mapping (actively placing lines, things, adjusting visuals etc.). Speedmaps will be under the honor rule. Neither you nor I can prove if a map went over the time limit or not, but trained eyes can see what is and is not a speedmap. If you cheat, people will notice. Any time in Slade used to give a custom sky, midi, etc. is outside of your mapping time. I would recommend spending some time looking over the texture pack before you begin mapping, so that you don’t waste time scrolling. Once your time is up, before you submit your map if you haven’t beaten your map, please spend time to verify that your level is beatable. I break this rule all the time and the community hates me for it. Speedmapping? Infinite detailing? The time limit for PUSS projects is to light a fire under the mapper’s ass, inspiring you to make something awesome in a short amount of time. It is meant to help hone efficiency and prevent scope creep or magnum opus syndrome. With your 6 hour time limit, you should develop a map that you’d be content to submit to a speedmapping project, as if there was no extra detailing time. It should have all major areas, follow all rules, and have gameplay implemented. Future updates can be used to develop on detailing, add non-playable area detailing, apply feedback, balance gameplay, and polish progression and atmosphere. TLDR; layout, general gameplay, and visuals in 6 hours - visual refinement/detailing/monster balancing in however long it needs. Map submissions must include a builder screenshot of the layout you came up with after 6 hours and then a screenshot of the map you refined from it. I'm OK with you submitting a map before you refine it if you need feedback/suggestions. Here is an example from PUSS 22: There is no cap to how many maps you can submit to these events. Any bug fixing/map changes are due to me 1 week after I upload the final playthrough video of the last submission. Also in general I'd like to contribute to more of these events going forward. Since Dis, I've skipped over a number of them for one reason or another, and looking back I kind of regret that. Let's see if I can't make at least one map for each event over the next year. Anyway, I've been looking at the resource pack since last night and I think I have a level 'theme' figured out. Different mappers will probably come up with unique scenarios, which will result in a nice and possibly eclectic set. I can imagine that some mappers will want progression towards the eggs to more obvious than others. I do not think that not having an overarching door set will take away from the experience. If you feel like it, I think you are welcome to make a custom texture, advertisting the location of the eggs. Blexor Posted October 27, 2023 Map Name: Swamp Things (t&t@ws_blex_v1.0.zip) Author: Blexor Music: "Maridia ~ Sandy Desert" from Super Metroid Sky: RSKY1 Difficulty Settings: Yes Build Time: Yes (But more seriously: 6hrs for base layout, probably about another 6-10 hrs for initial testing/fixing, And almost certainly another 15-20 hrs for re-texturing, detailing and general clean-up) Comments: A spooky ol' romp through the swamp. Find and destroy 5 alien eggs to dissolve the bio-matter blocking the way to the UFO. Board that sucker and find a switch to overheat the engines, but be aware: Those pissed-off martians probably won't let you leave so easily. Capturing the atmosphere on this one was a little bit tricky but I'm generally happy with how it turned out. I leaned into under-powering the player to try and amp up that 'dread' feeling. Before secrets, you can only acquire the single-barrel shotty, chaingun, and chainsaw. Ammo and health I made a bit tight as well, and while I myself can finish the map without running out completely, others might find UV a little too scant. I encourage players to respect Mr. Eager Beaver. Wasn't sure amount the midi choice, at first. I mean I love me some Soupa Meatroid, but I only put it in there as a "this will do for now" pick. Over time, though, it kind of grew on me. I used my incredible midi-editing skills (joke) to make it loop better, as it originally faded-out. Final thing to note: There are technically 7 secrets on this map, but 2 of them I left unmarked since they're missable. You can progress to a point where it is no longer possible to acquire them (at least not without some creative arch-vile kiting), and since I thought I'd be kind to 100%-ers, they're not tagged. Unless you're fixing to get 100% of the items, too, and uh... if that's the case then I guess you're f'd. A real shame because this texture pack is fun. Map Name: Home Invaders Author: NecrumWarrior Music: Lost in Place by Lippeth Sky: SKYAA_03 Difficulty Settings: Partially implemented Build Time: 5 hours 45 minutes Comments: This map leans heavily into using Boom's silent teleport to simulate floor-over-floor, but I also made the transition very obvious as a way to play up the B-movie aspect. I am pretty happy with it, but it needs some detail work. Have a gander at our Doomwiki, you’ll see a good number of our PUSS events are Boom compat. Majority of our Series III events are boom (September 2022-August 2023). I enjoy Speedmapping in boom more and compiling is easier, so it’s likely to be the format we’re gonna be making the most events with in the foreseeable future. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
