Standard Leaderboard

  1. [2] SURVIVED (2:28:27): NaZa - My Last Resort would never contain a tennis ground, but it was a good luck omen here. Whew.
  2. [1] MAP05: Vince Vega - Finally got the archviles to bunch up and then - bam. Out comes a noble barrier.
  3. [1] MAP05: Beginner - Most brilliant at Doom. The archviles never knew what hit them. (Neither did Beginner.)
  4. [1] MAP03: Anima Zero - Gets surrounded by fans and shot by paparazzi, though not with cameras.
  5. [1] MAP03: Bertt91 - Peekaboo!
  6. [1] MAP03: RedBoule - Goes down while shooting. Literally and figuratively.
  7. [1] MAP03: Suitepee - It's over, Suitepee! You gave up the high ground!
  8. [1] MAP03: SCF - Ran out of shells AND room.
  9. [2] MAP03: dt_ - Politely denies to Swim with the Archvile in that nukage pool. The archvile wasn't amused.
  10. [1] MAP03: Gr0mat - "Yes, health! Finally." Commentator's curse at its finest.
  11. [1] MAP03: Andromeda - Everything here was measured... except the gaps you could sift through in rush hour traffic.
  12. [1] MAP03: Austinado - Hugging the nearest baron when running away only works 25% of the time.
  13. [1] MAP03: purple_ruberoid - Wasn't purple a colour associated with nobility in the Middle Ages? No wonder the killer was a Baron.
  14. [1] MAP02: Chuckles_troll - Goin' Up the Stair Way.
  15. [1] MAP02: LadyMistDragon - Gets boxed in. Also both literally and figuratively. :^)
  16. [1] MAP02: Helm - I suspect that revenant's a Pokemon, otherwise I'm not sure how it attacked with such a dark Sucker Punch. (-cl 21)
  17. [1] MAP02: Li'l devil - The chaingunner just wanted to celebrate you getting the blue key, I reckon. As did the hell knight. And the imps.

What is the Doomworld Ironman League?

The DWIronman League is a monthly competition in which participants aim to survive for as many levels as possible in the given map set, preferably in one sitting. Click the spoiler tag at the bottom of the post for a detailed list of rules. Players of all levels of ability are welcome. It could change the way you play Doom!

In November 2023 the DWIronman League dies to Absolute Dishonor (-complevel 2), a two man set from 2016 by @valkiriforce and 40oz. With considerable and visible differences between the two mappers (get to MAP03 and MAP04, and you'll see what I mean), this set is effectively two sets intertwined with each other, joined only by a theme of inspiration from the old-time classics like Memento Mori and Requiem. Apparently the first spark of inspiration was reading about the Casalis sending an 8-map WAD to id to show them what they're capable of. Both 40oz and valkiriforce's offerings were played a few times in Ironman (UAC Ultra; TNT: Resistance), so this might be seen as a sort of Graduation Test for the League veterans.

Essential Info

  • Doom II (doom2.wad).
  • Compatibility level 2, or "Doom (strict)" for ZDoom derivative ports.
  • 8 maps.
  • Time estimate (if survival): 1.5 - 3 hours (90-180 min)
  • There's a certain difficulty spike on MAP05 when you open the red door. Be prepared.

> Download Absolute Dishonor

prboom-plus.exe -iwad doom2.wad -file ABSOLDIS.wad -complevel 2 -skill 4 -record demo_name.lmp -warp

Rules:

Spoiler

  • There are two competitions: Standard and Prepared:

    • To compete successfully in the Standard competition: your first play of the selected WAD(s) constitutes your one and only attempt for the month.

    • To compete successfully in the Prepared competition: your one and only attempt for the month is determined BY YOU immediately before play and may follow any prior number of active (playing the set) preparation that is strictly for practice/inspection purposes only. You cannot compete in the Standard competition after submitting a run to the Prepared competition. You may submit the first of your practice attempts to the Standard competition.

  • UV only (excepting 1CC format), continuous recording. No pistol-starting each level.
  • Demos (PrBoom+, GLBoom, Eternity or Chocolate), stream highlights and video recordings are the only accepted proofs. You must link to these runs in the thread.
    • If you stream your run on Twitch, please highlight/save it so that it doesn't go missing in case someone's very late with the obituaries.
  • No additional WADs may be loaded. Cosmetic WADs are fine if they're purely cosmetic.
  • No inspection of the WAD(s)'s content in an editor if you are submitting a Standard run, its category 3 included.
  • No cheat codes and no features that result in behavior beyond what is possible in the intended source port (e.g. freelook, jumping and crouching in a boom set). This includes dynamic lights and brightmaps. If streaming or recording videos using an advanced source port with compatibility options, you must display these settings on-screen before your run. In ZDoom derivative ports, "Doom/Boom(strict)" will suffice.
  • If you choose to stream/record your run for video rather than provide a demo and you die before completing a single level, either on the first map of a set OR because a single level was selected for the month, you must display the number of monsters killed/remaining in the level before you quit.
  • You do not have to play the secret levels in order to register a complete run. However, a player who finishes the game having completed more secret levels than their competitors will rank higher than them.
  • You cannot load a game having progressed past the save point.
  • You cannot consult Doom Builder during your run to check for map details.
  • If the recording of your official run is interrupted due to technical difficulties, you are not permitted a second attempt. Any surviving recording may be used to register a DNF result.
  • Accidentally restarting a level before a death exit takes you to the tally screen will stop your run immediately. You will still be registered as entering the next map (i.e. the one which you never entered) using a calculation to figure out what the intermission time would have been.
  • If you are competing in the Standard competition, you are required to affix one of three numbers to your run informing the League of your degree of familiarity with the map/set played. Note that your evaluation should only take into consideration the content covered in your run (e.g. if you remember only one part of a level in a set you haven't played before but never reach that level, you should list your run as a [1] instead of [2]):

  1. This is a blind run. If I have played or watched any of the level/set being played before, I cannot remember any details that would offer a reasonable advantage over truly blind players. *
  2. This is not a blind run. I have familiarity with the set - played the level/set before, or watched it being played, and can remember some details that would offer a reasonable advantage over blind players.
  3. This is not a blind run. While I have not outright played it, I've watched the level/set being played via stream, demo or video after it was announced as this month's challenge.

* "Reasonable" in this instance asks you to consider whether the details in question are worth committing to memory. As in, you would thank the person who gave you this information with a straight face and not expect to be laughed at for being an utter berk.

I guess I'll make an attempt soon. However, knowing my skill at Doom, I'll probably die 10 seconds into the run.

I participated in Ironman League once all the way back in 2016 (we were playing Khorus' Speedy Shit) and I died very quickly, scored the lowest, heh

It's all in the experience! Even if you die early, who knows about the fortunes next month :) Plus, you discover some great wads this way!

As for MAP03 being the culprit having a poker of deaths so far (100% rate!), I fully expected that coming into the month. It's a spike and a very high hurdle, alright. But if you make it past that map, you should have a relatively good time for a while. And I wouldn't say it's that difficult, it's just very overwhelming. Will be curious to see who'll be the first to make it through. My money is on Brainfreezzzzz :)

MAP05, 107 minutes in the game (oh well) (24 minutes since the intermission IIRC), ~290 fellas down.

Category I.

"Ok two Archies I'll take them down with the plasma -- no too slow, I'll kill them with the RL -- noo now they're too close, gotta switch to the plas -- ... :))))"

1% health on one of the earlier maps included :>

And I was constantly getting lost on those fathomless maps (3 and 5) and was doing some backtracking cringe a couple (dozen) times, so have some patience watching the demo :D

Category 2, survived in 2:28:27. Hot damn.

Run reminded me of a necessary disclaimer (otherwise I'm confident everyone's gonna die to the same spot on MAP05) so that'll get added in the OP ASAP.

dwironman_nov23_naza.zip

Spoiler

This mapset is BRUTAL. There's two spots you'll 100% die on if you don't know they're coming. The deadlier one of the two is on MAP05, where opening the red door opens the entire building, starting an insanely difficult ambush to face with only a plasma gun. There's two archviles at the back of it. If you don't know about that, you're dead, as the columns are thin. The other is a certain teleporter on MAP03, though having the plasma gun out helps a lot due to pain chance.

I almost died to said MAP03 ambush, but persevered. I had around 60. That's not the least health I had, though; after the killer ambush on MAP05 I got too cocky and almost died to something trivial, plus I found a very lucky soulsphere on the final map after getting caught out by no pain chance.

Leaving the cyberdemons alive on the final map proved to be the correct call in the end luckily.

DISCLAIMER: The foreknowledge I had was the result of playing this set in its entirety in January, because having only Bdubzzz and Veinen clear MAP03 in the Ironeagle in 2020 warranted an actual, detailed look into it to see whether it was suitable. It had been on Alfonzo's shortlist I received in 2019, and thus I wanted to run it. It's also the reason why I placed it in November, to negate my foreknowledge as much as possible, although - I can't say this without sounding somewhat egoistic - I have really good recollection, so I remembered stuff like the MAP04 puzzle or the various triggers on MAP03/05.

I do expect runners like ginc to also make it through, as I expect a cautious attitude will pay dividends on maps that valkiriforce made - they're designed to kill you slowly. If you're cautious and worry about your health, you should be in a decent position to survive whatever VF throws at you.

Category 1. Astonishingly for myself, I survived map 01, which is a record so far!

Died because of an asshole chaingunner who ate most of my health leaving me helpless to the hellknight slightly later on.

On map 02 I got to ~40/121 kills, and the total time was about 17 minutes.

Since I tried to play extremely carefully, the demo is probably really boring!

Absolute Dishonor, more like Absolute Disaster.

I wanted to watch your demo, but prboom+ gives me error "Unknown demo format". I'm using complevel 2 of course. Am I doing something wrong, or did you record it on a port without demo compatibility?

Seems like that demo was recorded in complevel 21, which PrBoom+ doesn't support. You can play it back using DSDA-Doom or Woof!.

Nothing to see here...

Of course I didn't pay attention to the rules and played with mouselook...

Maybe next time.

Dead on: Map 03

Kills: 145/511

Spoiler

Triggered a big monster closet when I was extremely low on ammo, tried going the other way instead, and then stupidly got pinned by enemies above and below the lift multiple times

Played this briefly back when it was released years ago, so it's a cat 2 here, however, all I remembered was what m1 looked like, and that m3 was really massive

Dead m3, took a while getting there I think, seemed to find all the less trodden secret passages on m3 as I went, so basically all monsters had their backs to me, but it still didn't help

Dead on: MAP03
Kills: 505/511
Time on MAP02 exit: 20:30

The kill count says enough, but this was pretty much the saddest death I've ever experienced in Doom. Dying while invulnerable cause I somehow thought there was a puzzle with those voodoo dolls... and then it just ended. Had a lot of fun up to that point though, even if I did get lost in MAP03 for way too long.

Category 1 (blind).

Entered MAP05 at 1:22:10.

Died with 333/462 kills (129 remaining). I forgot the "don't count Lost Souls" .pk3, but that's my mistake this month.

Means of death / comments:

Spoiler

3 words: Ghost Pain Elemental.

While it didn't directly cause my death, I probably would have lived otherwise. The undead delinquent teamed up with an Arch-Vile at the chokepoint to leave the red skull area, and the result was a clusterfuck of Revenant revives and Lost Souls shoved in my face. I got too aggressive trying to clear it out and got myself cornered.

And yes, I realize I could have isolated it and used rockets if I was more patient, but sometimes in these Ironmans it gets late and I just rush things.

The maps were some good old school fun, but holy shit MAP03 was just too unwieldy and long. I lost a lot of time trying to find the red keycard and just make my way around the map. MAP04 was cool though!

I'm willing to admit I died on the first map.  What I'm choosing not to do is to leave physical evidence of my dismal performance.  Participation points isn't worth this degree of scrubbiness.

Demo has been deleted and I'm consciously choosing to not retain or reveal any of the details of it.  Symbolicly, the evidence has been burned to ash and then the ashes were dissolved with acid.  Only this testimonial will remain for posterity.  I did play this for the IronEagle when it was chosen which was a factor in why I was so salty at the end of the recording.  Better luck next month, so it goes.

Damn, I was hoping someone would die (and submit demo) on the 1st map so that I wouldn't be last on the leaderboard >:(
