  1. DoomRL Special Levels: A Recursive Adaptation

So there was Doom. And there were roguelikes. Then there was Doom: the Roguelike. And now, the iconic special levels unique to DoomRL have their own adaptations in ye olde Doom 2 (or Final Doom). Each map also has co-op and deathmatch starts, and deathmatch-only items. See below for a summary of each map, and what's been tweaked in the process of adapting them. If a level's gimmick has you stumped, check there.

STORY: Yuki started downloading some file (he doesn't want you to know what it was) and Windows said that it will take about 15 minutes, so to kill some time he started to imagine Doom levels while listening to Gary Numan and Depeche Mode.

  10. Derceto

You have been hired by Emily Hartwood, heiress to the cursed Derceto mansion, to search the grounds for the cause of the late Jeremy Hartwood's mysterious suicide. Ms. Hartwood believes the ancient house hides a terrible secret that drove her father mad. You decide to begin your search in the dusty old attic and work your way down from there, but as you climb the attic stairs a cold sense of dread washes over you -- several floors below you hear the slam of the front doors as they trap you inside. Something knows you're here. An unnatural storm brews outside as you clutch the grip of your pistol with a sweaty hand. Solving the Hartwood mystery may mean more than a mere paycheck now: it means the difference between life...and whatever ghastly fate Jeremy killed himself to avoid.

This is a reproduction of the mansion from the original Alone in the Dark, courtesy of Doom Builder 2.

  11. Forevermore

One map for limit-removing ports that uses resources from Eternal Doom by TeamTNT extensively. Pretty much inspired by Eternal's works, but isn't really meant to resemble his style in any way rather than giving some small occasional hints on his trademark gameplay moves, so this inspiration is mostly ideological rather than factual. Meant to be challenging, but not insanely so.

In the end, it resulted a nuts.wad clone with some killer colours concept in it (i mean the level from alien vendetta), but i miserabily failed.

  20. Flay the Obscene - Reversed

This map is a revamp of the original Flay the Obscene, which was released in 1999. As a 15 year anniversary celebration of the map -which was the first big noticeable release from me- I have decided to dust it off and dress it up.

I could have called it "Flay the Obscene 4", since I considder it to be a fourth entry in the series, as it plays, and looks, quite different from the original one. This is mostly because it is played backwards, but also because there are new areas added to it, and a ton of updates in both terms of gameplay and architecture! But I have left out the "4" from the title but kept it in the filename as I want to emphasize the fact, that it is "simply" the first entry, which has been reversed. But why even considder the "4" then? Because, I think I want to create a fifth entry that sees the player tackle his homeworld, which has been... erhm, on second thought, we'd better leave that part out ;)

Since the map has been reversed, you will probably find the old start area of the map, which is now the end, somewhat cramped. There was a challenge to make that interesting, so instead of having the level end with an empty intro level - which has btw been merged into the main level - you will get to fight in that one too in order to give the entire level an interesting end. Confusing I know, so don't spend too long thinking about it. Just go and kick some ass and have some fun! :)

PS: !Minor spoiler! I guess you can avoid the final fight and just head for the exit. But can you really live with the shame of being a coward?

  21. Fish! (release 4)

My own (probably ill-advised) attempt to counter Justin Fisher's [*] opinion that PWADs based on the concept of rooms that form words are boring and unimaginative. I dare say most of them are but it was a nice little challenge anyway. [* JF of Aliens-TC fame, that is.] This is a relatively small level, but has some neat touches I think. "Fish" is the despised pet name by which my little brother was known. Scroll down for tips.

  23. Flashback to Hell - Original SFX version

It recently came to my attention that many players aren't too keen on the new sound effects I added to Flashback to Hell. I totally get where they're coming from, and so I am releasing this version without those new sound effects. Otherwise, the wad is exactly the same. Enjoy!

A 15-level mapset for DOOM 2 that is compatible with the "-complevel 9" setting. Features new music by PRIMEVAL and James Paddock. If the new music tracks are buggy in ZDOOM while using FMOD, updating to the latest non-official revision might fix the problem. I recommend using Fluidsynth, though.

Each level of this wad has been balanced for pistol-start play. In addition, this mapset has been specially balanced to allow for co-op play, using 2-4 players. In co-operative play, the maps will be teeming with LOTS more monsters than in single-player, but ammo and health pickups will be increased as well.

PrBoom-Plus users will see a new set of demos. Please do not use freelook, crouch, or jump. These features will either break the levels or will lessen the old-school feel.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
