What is the Doomworld Ironman League?

The DWIronman League is a monthly competition in which participants aim to survive for as many levels as possible in the given map set, preferably in one sitting. Click the spoiler tag at the bottom of the post for a detailed list of rules. Players of all levels of ability are welcome. It could change the way you play Doom!

In February 2024 the DWIronman Club dies to 25 Years Of Doom 2 (aka hommage25), made by @franckFRAG. If you've played 2022 Cacoward runner-up Bellatrix: Tales of Orionis, you may be familiar with this author's aesthetic skill at using the Doom 2 earth textures under a blue dusk/nighttime sky. This set is a smaller, more minimalist affair than Bellatrix, but the compact map sizes can sometimes make things more intimidating since there's nowhere to hide if things go wrong. I don't doubt that you pros are capable of surviving everything this can throw at you & chasing the fastest time, but be warned: after the homages to maps 1-5, we then skip right to the MAP18 tribute and the MAP29 tribute for the finale, which can be quite a spike if you're not expecting it.

Essential Info

  • Doom II (doom2.wad) + hommage25_2022.wad loaded.

  • Compatibility level 2, or "Doom (strict)" for ZDoom derivative ports.

  • 7 maps.

  • Time estimate (if survival): 40-60 minutes

> Download 25 Years Of Doom 2

(and an additional link to the WAD's forum post, just in case.)

Template For Recording:

prboom-plus.exe -iwad doom2.wad -file hommage25_2022.wad -complevel 2 -warp 01 -skill 4 -record demo_name.lmp

Rules:

Spoiler

-

  • There are two competitions: Standard and Prepared:
    • To compete successfully in the Standard competition: your first play of the selected WAD(s) constitutes your one and only attempt for the month.
    • To compete successfully in the Prepared competition: your one and only attempt for the month is determined BY YOU immediately before play and may follow any prior number of active (playing the set) preparation that is strictly for practice/inspection purposes only. You cannot compete in the Standard competition after submitting a run to the Prepared competition. You may submit the first of your practice attempts to the Standard competition.
  • UV only (excepting 1CC format), continuous recording. No pistol-starting each level.
  • Demos (i.e. any demo which can play back vanilla demo files, such as PrBoom+, GLBoom, Eternity, DSDADoom, Woof, Chocolate...), stream highlights and video recordings are the only accepted proofs. You must link to these runs in the thread.
    • If you stream your run on Twitch, please highlight/save it so that it doesn't go missing in case someone's very late with the obituaries.
  • No additional WADs may be loaded. Cosmetic WADs are fine if they're purely cosmetic.
  • No inspection of the WAD(s)'s content in an editor if you are submitting a Standard run, its category 3 included.
  • No cheat codes and no features that result in behavior beyond what is possible in the intended source port (e.g. freelook, jumping and crouching in a boom set). This includes dynamic lights and brightmaps. If streaming or recording videos using an advanced source port with compatibility options, you must display these settings on-screen before your run. In ZDoom derivative ports, "Doom/Boom(strict)" will suffice.
  • If you choose to stream/record your run for video rather than provide a demo and you die before completing a single level, either on the first map of a set OR because a single level was selected for the month, you must display the number of monsters killed/remaining in the level before you quit.
  • You do not have to play the secret levels in order to register a complete run. However, a player who finishes the game having completed more secret levels than their competitors will rank higher than them.
  • You cannot load a game having progressed past the save point.
  • You cannot consult Doom Builder during your run to check for map details.
  • If the recording of your official run is interrupted due to technical difficulties, you are not permitted a second attempt. Any surviving recording may be used to register a DNF result.
  • Accidentally restarting a level before a death exit takes you to the tally screen will stop your run immediately. You will still be registered as entering the next map (i.e. the one which you never entered) using a calculation to figure out what the intermission time would have been.
  • If you are competing in the Standard competition, you are required to affix one of three numbers to your run informing the League of your degree of familiarity with the map/set played. Note that your evaluation should only take into consideration the content covered in your run (e.g. if you remember only one part of a level in a set you haven't played before but never reach that level, you should list your run as a [1] instead of [2]):

  1. This is a blind run. If I have played or watched any of the level/set being played before, I cannot remember any details that would offer a reasonable advantage over truly blind players. *
  2. This is not a blind run. I have familiarity with the set - played the level/set before, or watched it being played, and can remember some details that would offer a reasonable advantage over blind players.
  3. This is not a blind run. While I have not outright played it, I've watched the level/set being played via stream, demo or video after it was announced as this month's challenge.

* "Reasonable" in this instance asks you to consider whether the details in question are worth committing to memory. As in, you would thank the person who gave you this information with a straight face and not expect to be laughed at for being an utter berk.

(Quite frankly I'm just somewhat pleased I didn't end up dying to the 5 trillion hitscanners in this wad and instead to some debatably much more sinister, dark nonsense)

I want to play these maps more relaxed another day, when there isn't 30+ degrees in my bedroom, cause they are neat and I missed some content. This was like, revisiting doom 2 (again) and Bellatrix sort of in parallel.

Entirely unexpected survival in around 59:10.

DSDA-Doom 0.27.5

Wow! When I began playing I was like "hopefully I'll survive the first 5 maps", but then I just beat it all. There were a few moments where I was like "how do you survive this?", but I just kept spamming plasma/chaingun and it just worked.

I really enjoyed it! I like these reimagined versions of the maps. The difficulty on UV also seems to be made for players right about my skill level.

Spoiler

I saw a bunch of survivals in the thread so I tried to be fast, but that almost bit me in the ass with all the shotgunners and chaingunners, and there's a couple nasty traps later on too. Still ended up with a good time, despite getting lost for a while at the end of map 3.

Although all the hitscan can be annoying for an ironman run, this was a nice reimagining of Doom 2 levels. They were all clearly recognizable without having the exact same layout.

Dead on: Map 06

Time of death: ~15:20 (~20s into map 06)

Seeing how the thread title was on the verge of being transformed into "DWIronman league doesn't die to 25 Years Of Doom 2 a whole lot", I set out to fix it by trying my favourite approach: "pretend I actually know where to go and what is safe to skip despite having no clue". I daresay I succeeded.

I'm trying to fix that, I can't fix it rn, it will be up later however.

Edit: Fixed it the video was too long so I had to verify my account!

Hi, after another relocation, the "Ironman exclusive" (c) is back here again.

Cat (🐈) 1, survived with the total time of 47:22. I expected worse results after I haven't been playing for a while ^.^

Interesting and relatively calm hommage, after I read the OP I expected harder levels or a sharper difficulty spike :>

Oh! It's a good surprise to see that this wad is played for the DWIronman :)

I had almost forgotten this project, since I am focused on something else at the moment. I will try to continue it when the time comes.

Thanks @head_cannon for highlighting my wad!

Cat 1 UV -cl2 dead on the final map
75 out of 92 monsters, about 37 minutes

Spoiler

Pretty tame pick, I could tell when I saw all the survival reports on the thread so I didn't go in playing slow, just ran through. Made it to the last map, something tells me is that on any other day I might have gotten this one. Only like 2-3 archies, a few revenants (and not super dangerous ones usually) and one cyberdemon makes this a pretty gentle outing. Still had a 1% HP recovery from the close quarters revenant trap but made it back in terms of health and ammo. Even where I died, I don't think my strategy was wrong... it's just the breaks when you try to plasma a turreted archvile how you're counting the damage versus how much damage you actually did and how much was wasted on the pillar the vile was on etc.

MAP07 Kills: 88/97

Time: 30:34

The summary is that I have been able to survive thanks to the maps and secrets being "known", (which are very similar to those of the original doom2) I did not find the secret of the first map (I thought you had to jump to the mini platform). On the other maps I found secrets because they are similar to doom2 (like the jump to the right on map03). I remembered the wad but very little, so sometimes I felt lost. The strong fights were those on map 06 and the last one on map 07. I've had a lot of fun with this wad, good luck everyone!

Category 1, MAP07 death.

I mean I had to laugh really. This rates among the most hilarious deaths in a while. Infinitely tall monsters in their rawest form.

I genuinely believe I would've placed first if I didn't decide to play Indiana Jones there.

Knew I was pretty far ahead going into Map07 and still decided to play very aggressively, almost died a couple of times because of it.

Would be cool if franckFRAG finalized this and put it on idgames, it has fun layouts for playing quickly.

I've never done one of these blind demo runs before and I quite like franckfrag's sets so I thought it would be a good time to join in. Pretty fun, I really liked the Courtyard themed map, one of my favorites from Doom II. Probably could have gone a bit faster but I didn't realize until re reading the thread that I didn't have to go for 100% kills lol.

No pressure, work on whatever inspires you in the moment, but just saying: If you ever feel like doing an Inmost Dens or an Abandoned Mines or whatever in this style, I'd play those too.

Those points-of-no-return are terrifying, and I got got by a lot of the traps. I find this WAD to be really entertaining stuff, equal parts spiteful and joyful, and I had a lot of fun revisiting it for Ironman. Thanks for letting me take over for a shift. We'll get back to the brutal shit next month.
