whybmonotacrab Posted August 26, 2020 (edited) So I'm still fairly new to Doom modding, having only really gotten into it after playing Eviternity late last year. After trying out tons of different source ports, I've come to the conclusion that Crispy is by far my favourite, as it just feels right to me. PrBoom feels too floaty and I don't really like how clean GZDoom looks. I also recently played through BTSX 1 and 2, as well as Akeldama, and I was wondering if you guys had any recommendations for good Vanilla/Limit Removing wads with custom textures? Others I've Tried: Eternal Doom, The Darkening Episode 2, Mutiny, Epic 2, Strain, Suspended in Dusk. P.S. Sorry if this has been asked before, I did try searching but couldn't find anything. Edit: Side question, is there a port like Crispy that plays Boom wads? Edited August 26, 2020 by whybmonotacrab 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
HAK3180 Posted August 26, 2020 (edited) I believe the Doomer Board Projects are all limit-removing. Crispy is yummy. EDIT: And check out @nicolas monti's work Edited August 26, 2020 by HAK3180 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

Aurelius Posted August 26, 2020 3 hours ago, whybmonotacrab said: Edit: Side question, is there a port like Crispy that plays Boom wads? Wholeheartedly recommend Woof (it's also developed by the fabian, who develops Crispy.) Has that same solid feel and is really great all around. It is based on the WinMBF, so I'm not quite sure if the infighting behaviour issues that MBF originally introduced are still there. There is a compat setting to prevent monsters from dropping pursuit, but I'm not sure if there's more to it than that. In any case, it feels practically identical to Crispy so it should work nicely for you. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
NiGHTMARE Posted August 26, 2020 (edited) Three other old school megawads with plenty of custom textures are Memento Mori 1 & 2 and Requiem. Also, if you enjoyed STRAIN check out Dystopia 3 which uses a lot of the same textures. Edited August 26, 2020 by NiGHTMARE 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted August 26, 2020 (edited) All of these have gotten great reviews, some are old classics, some are new wads. There's a small handful of single-map wads here but most are episodes or megawads. Most have custom textures, and they all definitely have their own flare, based on what you've played so far I wager you'll enjoy most of these. https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/Ports/megawads/2002ado https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/3ha2 https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/3ha3 https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/0-9/3habonus https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/a-c/area51 https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/a-c/allhell https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/av https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/a-c/bermuda https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/a-c/cafebrk1 https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/darken https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/dmonfear https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/d-f/doomcity https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/dcv https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/0-9/01fava https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/g-i/galaxia https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/g-i/hellrun2 https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/g-i/hoover https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/themes/TeamTNT/icarus/icarus https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/intercep https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/ksutra https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/marsw301 https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/themes/mm/mm_allup https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/m-o/mohawks https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/njdoom2 https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/rebirth https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/requiem https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/p-r/rwdyrudy https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/scythe https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/s-u/tdevil2 https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/megawads/thtthren This is actually just the tip of the iceberg.. Unfortunately I'm certain I'm still forgetting literally hundreds of great classics and new wads alike with this list! If you want even more vanilla/limit removing wads, all of at least decent quality, maybe it would be best to just download a curated pack I've put together over the last few years: Also, I could have sworn Crispy had Boom support, am I wrong? I think Fabian had started working on Boom support and then had a change of mind and decided to keep Crispy as a limit-removing port only. Though it does support some DEHACKED extensions, but you won't find support for Boom mapping features such as translucency, silent teleport, generalized linedefs, etc. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Catpho Posted August 26, 2020 @whybmonotacrab For DBPs released in 2018 and 2019, i highly recommend you check out reviews done by Not Jabba (2018 and 2019). As for those released December 2019 onward, it depends. The Big Ol' Billy led installments are often the most inventive and ambitious, so you should at least check out The City of Damned Children (Noir and Steampunk themed, loosely based on a French movie), Occult Secrets of the Third Reich (Wolf 3D themed), and A Doomer Boards Christmas Carol (good ol Christmas joy). If you want modern, highly polished and streamlined sets that are extremely Doom-y, you should check out Umbral Platinum and Spaceballs: The Sequel: The Quest For More DBP Maps (Yes, you heard that right: a Spaceballs Doom wad!). If you are looking for something more traditional but spicier, try Evil Egypt. Dungeons and Demons (DnD-inspired) is also a good choice for those seeking only lighthearted fun. Like greenery in your Doom maps? Biotech is Godzilla might be up your alley. If you want something more lovecraftian, Dead but Dreaming has got you covered, if you can stand to play on the Nightmare skill setting (or ignore this altogether by playing on UV, but this difficulty is less polished here). Be sure to embark on the Fall of Society sidequest if you like the krew's work! 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
