NaZa Posted February 1, 2022 (edited) February, 2022 The yearly leader board (not official - sheet 2022!) Standard Leaderboard 1 - SURVIVED +1 (1:10:51): NightTerror - The scary part is that this run could've been 14 minutes quicker. Hopefully the failed jumps on M3 managed to make the survival taste sweeter! 2 - SURVIVED +1 (1:17:28): Maribo - Chainsawphobic & glidephilic; even an optional train ride couldn't stop Maribo from laughing in M7's face. 2 - SURVIVED +0 (1:10:36): BoxY - The redemption arc vs cyberdemons on M7 warrants at least a novel. Great recovery - and rewarded! 2 - E1M8: Shepardus - Collided (pun intended) with more barons than envisioned. 2 - E1M8: ClumsyWizard - Cornered by the slimmest of margins and forced up close and personal with the barons. 2 - E1M7: NaZa - Killing the cyberdemon means there's no other immediate danger, right? Right? Surely. 2 - E1M6: Bdubzzz - Persevered with the chaingun even on 1 HP. That's called dedication. 2 - E1M6: Poncho1 - The cacos start coming and they don't stop coming and they don't stop coming and they don't stop coming 1 - E1M6: mhrz - A glide away from cheesing the map, mhrz instead opts to prove how Good at Doom they are. 1 - E1M6: 4shockblast - The definition of pixel perfect. 1 - E1M6: Anima Zero - Infinitely undone by a tag team of cacodemons. Couldn't see that (fireball from the other side of the map) coming, eh? 1 - E1M6: Pseudonaut - Is that the gateway the title of the map is referencing? 2 - E1M6: NoisyVelvet - Doomed at Greatness. 1 - E1M6: dt_ - Momentum preserved; CERN managed to create sentient barrels by the looks of things. 1 - E1M6: ryiron - Gotta admire the effort put in NOT to rocket yourself. 5 is not 6, though. 2 - E1M6: Beginner - Beginner got a thousand hugs from ten thousand cacodemons. Probably. Too many to count. 1 - E1M6: Suitepee - Crashed into a party, but the venue was already full. Attendees didn't take it too kindly. 1 - E1M6: Austinado - It was a great run up to that point, but ultimately got caught up in a horde. Entertaining run, though! 1 - E1M5: AxeL - If February continues to deliver this well, I'll run out of GAD obituaries by the end of the first week. Quality rocket-to-wall. 3 - E1M4: cannonball - Blink and you'll miss cannonball. I guess the baron wasn't blinking! 2 - E1M4: Endless - Try to guess what started Endless's downfall - 99% fail! Rather freak death itself however. 1 - E1M4: Major Arlene - The baron relentlessly rushed forward. Why don't these rockets do more knockback? 1 - E1M4: PsychEyeball - Crushed and shot. Repeat. All that in 10 seconds. 1 - E1M4: Peccatum Mihzamiz - "We're dead." 1 - E1M4: RHhe82 - What a perfect kill by the cacodemon, who went on to silence his doubters after the murder. 1 - E1M4: Vince Vega - "♩ In the arms of a baron ♫" 1 - E1M9: Spendoragon - Recovers brilliantly from yet another GAD only to get boxed in by cacodemons. Brutal. 1 - E1M3: Meowgi - A speedrun cut short by infinitely tall imps hanging on the edge with perfect balance. ? - E1M3: Napsalm - Backstabbed by a sneaky cacodemon. 1 - E1M3: Master Medi - A nice reminder to pray daily to RNGesus. If you ever ask what for, watch this run's E1M3. 1 - E1M3: Andromeda - Sensational at Doom™ 1 - E1M3: SilentD00mer - Made more noise than their name suggests and stumbled upon a hitscan paradise. 1 - E1M3: sectrslayr - Served to the imp by a delinquent duo of demons. After all, he had the higher ground. 1 - E1M3: Pegleg - Invents nukage slalom as a discipline before meeting their fate. 1 - E1M2: DisgruntledPorcupine - Meet the Sniper. He even made sure you stayed alive! (For a while, at least.) 1 - E1M1: Rujasu - The sergeant ran out of patience waiting for Rujasu to reload the pistol. Prepared Leaderboard # - SURVIVED +0 (20:09): Maribo - This would be a Bloodite Krypto Category 1 submission. Was it the wind? No, it was Maribo. # - E1M4: LadyMistDragon - Taking cover is so overrated. Goes skinny dipping instead. What is the Doomworld Ironman League? The DWIronman League is a monthly competition in which participants aim to survive for as many levels as possible in the given map set, preferably in one sitting. Click the spoiler tag at the bottom of the post for a detailed list of rules. Players of all levels of ability are welcome. It could change the way you play Doom! This month the DWIronman League dies to Return to Hadron E1 by @cannonball, one of the veterans of the League. To anyone who has heard of ConC.E.R.N.ed, as some of the maps appear to be based on that WAD (and the fact that it is also set in CERN), this episode can be considered a spiritual successor to it. E2 and E3 were released in 2016 and 2020 respectively, but this month we'll be visiting the first of the bunch which netted cannonball a Cacoward in 2015. A very enjoyable, but difficult episode, this limit-removing set should provide a good challenge to see how well you do against the original bestiary. Essential Info (The Ultimate) Doom 1 (doom.wad) Compatibility level 3, or "Doom (strict)" for ZDoom derivative ports. Time estimate: 1-2 hours 8+1 maps = 1 episode Download Return to Hadron E1 prboom-plus.exe -iwad doom.wad -file hadronf.wad -complevel 3 -skill 4 -record demo_name.lmp -warp Rules: Spoiler There are two competitions: Standard and Prepared: To compete successfully in the Standard competition: your first play of the selected WAD(s) constitutes your one and only attempt for the month. To compete successfully in the Prepared competition: your one and only attempt for the month is determined BY YOU immediately before play and may follow any prior number of active (playing the set) preparation that is strictly for practice/inspection purposes only. You cannot compete in the Standard competition after submitting a run to the Prepared competition. You may submit the first of your practice attempts to the Standard competition. UV only (excepting 1CC format), continuous recording. No pistol-starting each level. Demos (PrBoom+, GLBoom, Eternity or Chocolate), stream highlights and video recordings are the only accepted proofs. You must link to these runs in the thread. No additional WADs may be loaded. No inspection of the WAD(s)'s content in an editor if you are submitting a Standard run. No cheat codes and no features that result in behavior beyond what is possible in the intended source port (e.g. freelook, jumping and crouching in a boom set). This includes dynamic lights and brightmaps. If streaming or recording videos using an advanced source port with compatibility options, you must display these settings on-screen before your run. In ZDoom derivative ports, "Doom/Boom(strict)" will suffice. If you choose to stream/record your run for video rather than provide a demo and you die before completing a single level, either on the first map of a set OR because a single level was selected for the month, you must display the number of monsters killed/remaining in the level before you quit. You do not have to play the secret levels in order to register a complete run. However, a player who finishes the game having completed more secret levels than his/her competitors will rank higher than them. You cannot load a game having progressed past the save point. You cannot consult Doom Builder during your run to check for map details. If the recording of your official run is interrupted due to technical difficulties, you are not permitted a second attempt. Any surviving recording may be used to register a DNF result. Accidentally restarting a level before a death exit takes you to the tally screen will disqualify your run. If you are competing in the Standard competition, you are required to affix one of three numbers to your run informing the League of your degree of familiarity with the map/set played. Note that your evaluation should only take into consideration the content covered in your run (e.g. if you remember only one part of a level in a set you haven't played before but never reach that level, you should list your run as a [1] instead of [2]): This is a blind run. If I have played or watched any of the level/set being played before, I cannot remember any details that would offer a reasonable advantage over truly blind players. * This is not a blind run. I have familiarity with the set - played the level/set before, or watched it being played, and can remember some details that would offer a reasonable advantage over blind players. This is not a blind run. I have passively prepared for the competition - watched the level/set being played via stream, demo or video after it was announced as this month's challenge. * "Reasonable" in this instance asks you to consider whether the details in question are worth committing to memory. As in, you would thank the person who gave you this information with a straight face and not expect to be laughed at for being an utter berk. NaZa Posted February 1, 2022 What a thrilling last month! Even though nobody survived the dreaded MAP04, @mhrz was the one who got there the quickest - winning both the Ironman and Ironeagle challenge last month, what domination! Great performance! Also a great return performance by @Dragonfly and quite a high result from @NoisyVelvet to whom results haven't always been kind, with shock DNFs in the history of the league. One such shock DNF happened in another E1 replacement, Double Impact, so hopefully Noisy will want to remedy that this month :) No pressure! 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

Shepardus Posted February 1, 2022 Awesome pick, Return to Hadron is the best there is for Ultimate Doom. E3 is my favorite, but I'm glad that we're not starting with that, since there's a good chance I wouldn't make it past E3M1. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Poncho1 Posted February 2, 2022 No promises, but if I can, I might take up this challenge. I've played the wad before (and I think I have some UV-Maxes for a couple of the levels), but it's literally been months since I've actually played Doom, so would that be a Prepared [2] run, or am I completely misunderstanding the rules and whatnot? 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
NaZa Posted February 2, 2022 (edited) It would be a standard category 2 run. You've not actively prepared for the challenge - you've not played the set after the challenge was announced. Edited February 2, 2022 by NaZa clarification 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
NaZa Posted February 2, 2022 (edited) Double post, but attached you'll find my attempt. Unfortunately didn't make it to the end - the fight I died in I should've survived and had I been a bit more spatially intelligent chances are I would have. Especially with my secret hunting on the previous maps. I don't mind, I survived the previous maps. It's just I've been quite close. Category 2, died on E1M7. dwironman_naza_feb22.zip Spoiler Not the cleanest run ever. Had quite incredible luck on a few points in the early maps, and pulled through. M6 I think I've had under control during the entirety, it's one of maybe three maps I've scouted to see if it's suitable for Ironman (scouted = ran through like a headless chicken, didn't attempt to finish the map; the others were M1, of course, and M8). It's difficult, for sure, but I think it's not the most difficult set I've thrown out there. Enjoyed every second of my playthrough, great set. I will be finishing this out-of-Ironman. Anything survived past M6 is a bonus and unfortunately it was a big fat ZERO. More content with my death than in ROS, however. I've noticed both the demons and cacodemons closing up on me, but I underestimated how quickly they'll be able to do so. Oh well. Shit happens. At least I get to be first for a few minutes or hours. BoxY Posted February 2, 2022 Category 2, survived in 1:10:36. Way better than my expectations, from what I dimly remembered from playing a few years ago I was almost 100% sure I'd be dead on E1M6 at best. Maybe I got better at the game since then or maybe I just got lucky, who knows. Anyway, good pick, I think this was one of the first ultimate doom pwads I ever played and it's still at least as fun as I remembered. dwim-bx-hadron.lmp 7 Quote Share this post Link to post
Anima Zero Posted February 2, 2022 Got pretty far in this run (though had a very close call at one point because crushers after grabbing a key + baron that appears in front of you = Panic!). Then...I hit E1M6. When I realized there was 240+ monsters and no monsters actually in the level besides the two that get blown up by barrels at the start, I knew I was going to get my ass kicked the moment I find what causes enemies to teleport in. After grabbing the first key, my prediction came true within a minute. I'm a frakkin' psychic aren't I, heh. DWIronman_Hadron_AnimaZero.zip 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
SilentD00mer Posted February 3, 2022 Category 1 - Died on E1M3 - 45/143 kills Yeah, maybe I could survive longer, but my nerves didn't help me. I missed many shots and made bad decisions in the end of the run, maybe too focused in avoid lost souls and cacos that I forgot to pay attention to the snipers. Well, maybe I'll do better next time. LadyMistDragon Posted February 3, 2022 (edited) Category 1, died in E1M6 Well, glad to get one of these out. After nearly killing myself with my own rockets twice, dealing with shotgunners far more duarable than they had any right to be, and some other stupidity, it seemed like I had a shot until E1M6. Do you know what it's like to rocket your way through your opposition and then realize that might not be the wisest course of action when there are many Spectres around? Yeah, I had a small chance to get out of this still, but there was really little prayer without a plasma rifle. hardrom ironman.zip Edited February 3, 2022 by LadyMistDragon 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

NaZa Posted February 3, 2022 Ah, okay, thank you very much Andromeda. I was aware MBF21 and DSDA-Doom existed, but not anything more, so my ignorance is on fault there. As the complevel in the command line is -complevel 3 because the set is limit-removing, I'll unfortunately have to check if -complevel 21 affects gameplay substantially enough to result in a possible (illegal comp settings) flag. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Also, what category is your run in? It appears to have been recorded with From Doom With Love 2021.10.12 (a friendly fork of DSDA-Doom). If one opens the demo in a text editor and scrolls to the bottom they'll find that there. Running -analysis on the demo reveals it was recorded on skill 3 which appears to still be the default in that port. Coupled with that and having been recorded on cl21 (also the default), it seems what likely happened was the launch parameters weren't passed to the executable somehow. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
NaZa Posted February 3, 2022 Thank you Rotwang, I wasn't aware it was visible in notepad - that's quite useful to know for the future. I had just downloaded DSDA-Doom and saw that it was recorded on -skill 3 as well. Sucks, it was quite solid gameplay. I'll have to disqualify the run because it wasn't on UV but let that not discourage you from further attempts in the future @LadyMistDragon! For the future, the command line in the OP is usually correct when it comes to launch parameters. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

I think that would be an option here. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

NaZa Posted February 3, 2022 Thank you for providing a run - this time everything is okay! It is not standard category 2, however - as you've technically played the set after it was announced - however, it's eligible for the Prepared Leaderboard, where it will be put. Technicalities, I know. But now officially, welcome aboard! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
RHhe82 Posted February 3, 2022 Finally I get to participate in this contest the second time! This was category 1 to me, I have never played or seen this one before. I think I've heard the name of the wad mentioned before, though. Completed E1M3, died on E1M4 with 18/188 kills at approximately 23 minutes, 42 seconds of total playtime. I recorded it in DSDA-Doom v0.23, complevel 3 as instructed. I didn't have dsda-doom.wad loaded as per usual, since I feared it might trigger disqualification. Spoiler Damn that hot start took me by surprise. Embarassingly enough, I spent a LOT of time in E1M3 trying to look for secrets, without much success, so it's going to be one boring demo to watch if someone wants to. rhhe82_hadrone1_cl3_dsda-doom_hadron.zip 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
