A Restriction-Themed Mapsets / Maps List (Better organized now, plus a WIP Excel doc!)

If single-level stuff counts, my Nine Circles was built on the idea of producing multiple scenarios/permutations of one room.

Also Doom 1/2 recreated from memory projects might count, since they had restrictions on stuff like playthrough counts or listening to music tracks.

ADDED on 2023-08-07:

100 Line Christmas
200 Line Massacre

I'm updating this list. It's been a little while since I've last touched it.

If you know any names of restriction-themed WADs that have come out in the last year, that'd be very helpful!

Limit Buffet's been released recently and it's all about crazy limits (heck it's in the name)

Since each (and MIDI) has its own limit I think it would go under the "multiple restrictions" category.

Spoiler

Even though I helped work on it, I'm not shilling, promise!

Maybe the Switcheroom series can cout as well:

I think, however, I wouldn't put Switcheroom: The Forgotten Maps in this category:

Quote

18 additional maps made for the project that were rejected for various reasons. Such as not resembling the original map, making the incorrect map, or being replaced with a better submission.

Ultimate Doom in name only

96 kb challenge

Fastest Shovels 4 (100 sidedefs in total, 2 hours to make the map)

Oops! All Greyboxes!

Doom 2 minus Doom

Follows the same principle of "Doom 2 in song only":

DOOMKID.WAD

The Healer Stalks

Musical Mapping

Not sure if these count as themes restrictions, but here we have as well:

TH1RT3EN

Boaty McBoat

Oops! All techbase!

KINDa

Never played fully, but i think Eviltech follows the themes restriction as well, but i'm not too sure.

I really appreciate this list being made, tons of really creative projects here. I've always found limit projects cool, really tests the skill and creativity of the creator.

Thanks, you two!

Saw this last night only just got time to update. :D

Lots of good additions here.

I changed 'Theme Around a Name' to 'Theme Around a Name / Song'.

Added 2023:08-12:

Ultimate Doom In Name Only

The 96kb Challenge

Fastest Shovels 4

Oops! All Greyboxes! (this one barely made the cut, because as far as I can tell, it only requires you to use a certain texture pack - although, it does kind of fit in 'Theme Restriction', too, technically. Looks really cool.)

DOOMKID.WAD

The Healer Stalks

Musical Mapping

TH1RT3EN

Boaty McBoatwad

Oops! All Techbase!

Eviltech (another one that I believe technically fits in restriction around a theme - as the maps aren't based on the name of the subway stations, but the aesthetics. If it was based on the names of the stations, I'd include it in 'Theme Around a Name / Song.'

I did not include KINDa / KINDa 2.0 - as I wasn't able to tell what the limitation / restriction was.

Out of curiosity, how come MANY and NUMEROUS are seperate categories? They seem to be fairly similar concepts.image.png.c0bdfb8dad8a094ec9dd984bd4953aa2.png

This is a fair point.

I only did that because Limit Buffet has a huge amount of different limits, and I wanted to indicate that without having to write all of them out. Ultimatum only had 10, so I felt it made sense to differentiate.

I'll just change it both to 'numerous'. You're right!

Pepper is a set of reality maps.

1024: ABC edition is based around 1024x1024 alphabetical geometry.

1badwad was built around mono-color textures and was the inspiration behind DIY.

I CANT GIVE YOU ANYTHING was built around mono-color textures, HOMs, and disorienting/distracting textures like FIREBLU variants.

ARCADE is a WAD where every map's geometry is exactly the same and only differs in thing placement.

Dark Scythe is a collection of exclusively Dead Simple-style maps.

All of PUSS' Christmas events are restricted. The first two have 12 required restrictions (to the tune of the 12 days of Christmas!) and the third asks mappers to reuse rules from the former two.

PUSS IV: 12 Days of Doommas
12 Hours of mapping, 11 Shotgun shells, 10 Sector limit, 9 Pain elementals, 8 Former humans, 7 Brainy spiders, 6 Power spheres, 5 Arch-viles, 4 Cyberdemons, 3 Damage floors, 2 Keycards, and 1 BFG.

PUSS XIV: 12 MORE Days of Doommas

12 Barrels o' fun, 11 Former humans, 10 Beefy barons, 9 Cell charge packs, 8 Hours of mapping, 7 Crushing ceilings, 6 Secret sectors, 5 Arch-viles, 4 Voodoo dolls, 3 Doomcute thingies, 2 Cyberdemons, and 1 Bone closet in a Trick door.

PUSS XXIII: Mappin' Round the Doommas Tree - Mappers were required to choose two from all previous rules minus the time limits.

As for (some of) our other events: our 13th event you have catalogued already but some events you may find interesting may be PUSS VI: IMPERFECT HATRED, where every map is a remake of Doom's E4M2; PUSS XXI: Trick & Tear The Living Dead, a zombie survival mapset where you have to solve puzzles to beat levels; as well as the paired PUSS V: Clandestine Castle Crashing & PUSS XV: Mysterious Mayan Madness, both being themed mapsets where players were required to build either a castle or a jungle temple, respectively, with a minimum secret count. The former wad was 10 secrets per map minimum and the latter has 6 secrets minimum and 4 'traps' minimum.

Dunno if these are restrictive enough. Although you don't catalogue time limits, I should add that every event we do has a time limit which could range anywhere from 1 hour to 12 hours to well uh... no time limit. So erm... not every event has a hard time limit I guess.

I think they are. I'll take a closer look a bit later tonight, when I have time to add the new info.

A lot of these would fit under 'theme restriction' - or 'many restrictions'.

Appreciate the information, I'll have to get to playing these at some point.

Like @endoomer already said, the 3HA and 180MPV family of .WAD's should be added, they were made with the three hour build time restriction in mind.

Do they have any other restrictions than the time limit? I'm familiar w/ the WADs, but I double-checked on doomwiki, and it states that there was only a 3 hour time limit.

Of course, a timelimit to complete a map is a 'restriction' - it would be wrong to state otherwise, but this list does not include maps that are only restricted by timelimit (this was something I was asked to clarify way back when I first made the thread) - unless there are other restrictions being applied, otherwise this list would be much, much larger.

Perhaps I'll need to start work on a 'speedmapping sets' list at some point.

I'm thinking of really fleshing this list out, and making it into an excel document that has hyperlinks to each WAD, author's names, better descriptions of restrictions, date the WAD was made, etc. etc.

I'll have to find some time soon.

As someone who's made Excel spreadsheets in the past, there's something weirdly enjoyable about the process.

This would be a good way to format the list, sometimes a standard Doomworld post can be limiting for this kind of list format.

Agreed - I think this will make this thread much better.

Any other data columns you think I should add to this chart I've started? I'm still going to add links to each WAD, but I'll need to get my 'bit.ly' account going again to shorten the URLs before I do that.

I figured a dropdown note would be the best way to show a list of authors, without dramatically increasing the length of the chart.

Here's a screenshot of what I've got going right now:

I'll likely refine this as I go, but it's nice to be started!

Disclaimer: I made two maps for this community project and i feel like this dose not enough love it should get.

I don't know if this would fit in the Theme section but here is a community project i was apart of and the mega wad is centered around different themes.
