Welcome to the twenty fourth edition of the Pineapple Under the Sea Speedmapping Series organized by myself and @Peccatum Mihzamiz. This month’s project is all about love and Valentine’s Day. We have compiled an extensive resource pack that includes: New and original textures and sprites by @Peccatum Mihzamiz Compiled textures from OTEX, CC4, Makkon, and more! A new palette featuring an extended pink range by myself Customized rocket launcher, plasma gun, BFG, and fist sprites A custom status bar by @Danlex An M_DOOM logo by @BluePineapple72 An intermission screen by @muumi And a fancy titlepic by @dashiefrickintyan But alas, Love is hard, and you and your partner seem to be having a quarrel. Sometimes the best way to solve a quarrel is to fight through it! And so this month we’re making deathmatch maps, with single player monsters included (like Bourgeois Deathmatch did). We’d love to see what kind of romantic setting you’d like to deathmatch in, whether it be lush green fields overgrown with flowers, fancy marble hallways adorned with paintings, or a heart-filled tunnel of love. Tips on making a Deathmatch map can be found further below. Each mapper gets 6 hours of mapping time. After this time is up you are allowed to decorate the place some more, sprucing up the place for Valentine’s Day. After you’ve finished your Deathmatch map, make a single player version of it as well. Copy your entire map and paste it right next to the Deathmatch map. Remove Deathmatch stuff, add single player monsters and player starts, remove or add some stairs, walls, introduce keys and doors to make progression in your map, etc.. There is no time limit for this. Open up Bourgeois Deathmatch in the editor to see what we mean. DOOM 2 IWAD Limit removing format. Doom: Doom 2 (Doom format). Complevel 2. Since this map is targeting amongst others multiplayer ports, advanced trickery such as Mikoportals is unfortunately not allowed. Your map has to run well in ports like Zandronum. Jumping and crouching are not allowed. Mouselook is optional, but maps need to be beatable without mouselook!!! Co-op starts and difficulty settings are mandatory. The time needed for balancing difficulty levels and adding co-op features does not count towards your maximum mapping time. Please avoid softlocks on co-op. Preferably your map will feel Valentinesy. Making an E1M1 remake with these resources is cool and all that, but try to let you imagination shine and make a setting that touches upon love. Make sure your MIDI does not trigger copyright stuff on things like YouTube and Twitch! Maps are due either in the related discord channel or in this thread by Tuesday the 31st at 11:59 PM PDT. ***OPTIONAL***: Pick a partner and ask them to be your Valentine! Make a map with a partner. This can be done in any way you choose, so long as your combined time does not exceed the total time limit. Make a layout and have your partner detail it, or each of you make half a map and stitch them together. Anything is possible with the power of love! Tag your partner in a message in this thread and ask them to be your Valentine. Decay has written a superb essay on making good, interesting and pretty Deathmatch map. We highly recommend you have a read! After that we recommend watching Doomkid’s excellent video on the subject. A sneak peek at some of the stuff in the resource: Spoiler Your mapping time can be nonconsecutive. Your timer will only go down when you are mapping or playtesting. - Speedmaps will be under the honor rule. Neither you nor I can prove if a map went over the time limit or not, but trained eyes can see what is and is not a speedmap. If you cheat, people will notice. Any time in Slade used to give a custom sky, midi, etc. is outside of your mapping time. I would recommend spending some time looking over the texture pack before you begin mapping, so that you don’t waste time scrolling. Once your time is up, if you haven’t beaten your map, please spend time to verify that your level is beatable. Bug fixing after your time limit has passed is for fixing bugs, not adding new areas to your map. Your bug fixing phase should be spent balancing thing placement and fixing any potential gameplay errors, such as texture misalignment or soft locks. We’re generally okay with you sending me as many fixes as you make, as long as these fixes don’t overhaul any major sections of your map outside of culling/modifying monsters. You’re not supposed to be mapping after your time is up, you’re supposed to polish what you have. This time period is where we think you should add difficulty settings and add any fixes for co-op softlocks. There is no cap to how many maps you can submit to this event. Any bug fixing/map changes are due to me 1 week after we upload the final playthrough video of the last submission. We'll (probably) be creating short map descriptions for each map for release at the end of the month, so this will help us. Screenshots: I only need the .wad file of your map. Compiling your submission with the resources is unnecessary for this event. I may have only made two deathmatch arenas that were stapled onto otherwise single-player maps before, which--as far as I'm aware--no one has ever played on, but I won't let minor details like that stop me from acting like I have any idea what I'm doing. Quick question, though: Is is alright to use any of the base Doom II textures in our maps? The only rule with them really is to make sure they’re aesthetically applicable, which is always really just a taste based thing. If you can make startan work then go for it. Like for puss 22 for example since we were making hell cavern maps there was a soft ‘don’t use startan etc.’ rule, but shit like fireblu, SFLR_6, or any of the marble textures were fine 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

A quick note: due to palette changes some of the vanilla resources may be a little miscolored. Comments: My first Deathmatch map ever. I usually make bigger maps so it was a challenge for me to make something smaller and interconnected. Happy with it. Build Time: 5 Minutes sketching, about 5 hours for the architecture, then an insane amount of time sprucing up the place, and then a day making the single player stuff.Known issuus: This map makes extensive use of extra textures that will be added to the next version of the texture pack. So don't play it until we release version 8 of the resource pack! Comments: Like a Knife Cutting Through Water, from the Korean 칼로 물 베기 (kallo mul begi). It refers to an unbreakable relationship. It's not possible to cut and separate a liquid like water with a knife. So when you see a couple going through a rough patch but you are certain that they will mend their relationship, you can use this idiom. I sketched out the map with my partner (the first time she ever made a thing for Doom) and then I went to work. It was amazingly tricky to make an open river valley that still has lines of sight that work in Deathmatch. I hope I succeeded. Peccatum Mihzamiz Posted January 13, 2023 We now have an intermittent Deathmatch server up and running with the latest compilation of maps. Look for [TSPG] PUSS: Lover's Quarrel. Version 9 of the resources. An updated resource pack with new extra switches, some of them custom made by @muumi! Also a few other small texture and sprite changes and additions. The first 10 maps thus far submitted to the project are also in this resource pack, plus updated version of all of them (though the music in MAP06 will change). @Napsalm tested the first 9 maps yesterday (thank you!) and a VOD of that stream can be watched here. Know issues: at least one of the switches doesn't animate. This will be fixed. Because I have included 10 maps in this resource pack, the first 10 MIDIs are all specifically assigned to those maps and should not be considered as part of the future Valentine's Day MIDI pack. If you're missing a few songs I recommend you have a look at version 7 of the resources, that still has all of them. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
