Anyone got any non-famous 90s megwads for doom 2?

Recommended Posts

I recently played this 90s wad called "Underground Military Bunker" and I kinda crave 90s wads now

anyone got any suggestions for 1990s megawads that aren't as famous as... per se, momento mori or alien vendetta?

Dystopia 3 is a "cult classic" but not the most well known I guess. It's a very interesting wad imo, with cool minimalistic aesthetics.

I'm currently blasting through NJDoom 2 by Nigel Rowland(Enjay). It's a bit under-detailed in places with some lovable 90's jank here and there(Map 13 - The Long Run comes to mind), but some of the maps in this megawad have been quite excellent and overall it's definitely worth playing!

Phobos.wad

I'm not sure how popular it is but it was made around 1999. It's only 4 levels but they are exquisite.

Marswar

This one is a full megawad with a very hilarious creation story behind it. It's moderately well known, but not exactly famous I guess. It's quality is practically on par with Freedoom phase 2.

I learned about Doom Rat a year or so ago on an obscure wads thread that I can't find just now and it's stuck with me hard.  It's weird as hell, and really hard (at least for me), but it's fascinating, even more so that so little is known about where it came from or why it exists.  I really like it.

Gatebar.wad

A 30-level megawad downloaded from here long ago. There is very little information about the WAD, or who the author is.

I am the Sparky who is referenced in the Sparky database. This all happened about 20 or so years ago so I admit my memory is a bit fuzzy on the details. There was a collaboration effort between Jive and me to find and preserve old and/or obscure megawads. Gatebar happens to be one of the more obscure ones. Thank you for providing a mirror for this one as it would likely be lost otherwise. I can't provide more info beyond that, it was a really long time ago.

A "distribution #2" for the second edition of "Tricks of the Doom Gurus" exists: same wad but without new music.

NECROMN1.ZIP

DEREK's Doom Levels by Derek McBurney and Neil Dorin.

10 levels.

Only available on the 1998-3 issue ( disc 3.12) of PC Gamer ( maybe a PC Gamer exclusive?)

On Mars War:

The story starts off with the player, a lone Martian terraformer, lost in the middle of nowhere. The United Organizations of Earth have lead a terraforming project, and are threatening to take over the planet. Recent events have prompted an invasion from Earth, but something went wrong with their ships, which possess "space-warp" capabilities. Those ships were built by a company with the initials "MS".

The megawad is anti-Microsoft, the biggest clue to this being the final level, where the demonic visage of the final boss is replaced with an image of the face of Bill Gates as a Borg. The starting room of the level is also in the shape of the Internet Explorer logo. The god mode face is replaced with that of Tux, the mascot of the Linux operating system.

Talking about more 90s obscure Megawad, here's a interesting one: https://www.moddb.com/games/doom-ii/addons/ultra-doom-2x

It's mostly revamped original Doom 2 maps with a new MAP31 and MAP32 sets in a alien spaceship, but it's still worth a play! By the same author, 2 sequels are been made: Doom 2 Extreme and Doom 2 Extreme Gold

City of Doom

It's only 11 maps, so it doesn't qualify as a megawad, but there have been other non-megawads in the thread, so there's precedent for it. Also, although it was released in September 2000, it was made throughout the 90's.

Realm of Shades

Only 7 maps, but released in 1998. And it has separate files for maps, textures, and music, as well as a batch file, to further add to the 90's feel.

Castle of Evil

Only 1 map, but it's remarkably large and non-linear for a map from the mid-90's. And it was released as CASTEVIL.WAD, so it even has the custom of its "title" being the filename.

This is one of the great things about Doomworld, and about this community, that you can connect with the author of a database from decades ago and get details about it.

I love this thread... but, that's gotta be one of the toughest websites (DLW) to read and navigate.

This one maybe?

I'm guessing it's that one since I linked that Doom Rat wad there and yeah, it's pretty weird but cool at the same time.

Yes that was the one! Thanks for sharing it there, it really captured my imagination in its commitment to whatever very strange story the author must have had in mind.

I really enjoy this wad. Anyone have any insight into the author?

I'd agree that this is worth a look.  Note that there is a pretty significant change in the visual/design flair over the set - the early maps are significantly more basic in appearance than the latter ones.

Realm of Chaos.  Before it was picked for the MegaWAD club, never heard of it.  It was never posted on idgames back in the day.

It's also supposed to have a sequel coming out sometime soon (though as ever with such projects, the last 1% of the work is taking what feels like just as much time as the other 99% to get done).  @Steve D may have more concrete info on that
