Good small-map WADs

Recommended Posts

So last night I started playing Scythe for the first time, and while I knew the first episode was meant to be small and introductory, I was surprised at how fun it was to tear through the whole thing in less than an hour.

Guess I've been playing a lot of magnum opuses lately.

What other good, bite-sized WADs are out there?  I've already got Claustrophobia 1024 on the list, what else ya got?

Smart! I'm all over it.

You should really savor the short Scythe maps.

The thread bellow has a bunch of community projects with various limitations.

If you want some specific picks, then: Zone 400, 100 Line Massacre, and v64.

Well, if you want more WADs like Scythe, then I'd recommend A2Rob's Machete. It's essentially a straight-up Scythe homage and channels Alm's dedication to spatial efficiency. Following that same thread is Myolden's Nostalgia, which has a laser focus on compact and punchier maps married with relaxed detailing.

I did play Nostalgia last year, it frickin ruled.  And i guess it didn't occur to me at the time but it makes total sense now, a lot of that had to do with how playable it all was and how easy it was to carry momentum from one map to the next.  Looking forward to trying 2.  Machete is also on my list, but I felt like it'd be more valuable to play it after Scythe.

Going Down. Difficulty can be a bit high if you start on UV like I did recently so I wasn't clearing all the maps in 5 minutes or so, but yeah. Really cool and creative wad with a compact mapping style from start to finish.

Search any DBP with less than 13 maps and you are good to go, those are the best for 3 hour playthroughs in my opinion. Especially evil egypt.

Rush, the first 11 maps are short but sweet with escalating difficulty, towards the end of the set it gets considerably difficult, sorta Micro-Slaughter, with Map09 and Map11 being considerably difficult. It ends on a large moody macro-slaughter map with 1234 enemies that'll prob take you 2 hours to complete on yr first playthrough but the first 11 maps are only around 10 to 30 minutes each :)

Rush.wad, try it, super fun!

Some stuff that hasn't been recommended yet:
Glaive // 2 // Warglaive // 3 // Starshine // Midnight (EANB has been studying Scythe in their temple for years)

Bourgeois Megawad // 10AM Break

Apocaclips

Kuchitsu

Cold Front

Pocket Slaughter

Bing Bong Blippo

Doomium (albeit some maps went way out of scope)

Half Moon // 2

Speed Weed

Shorter Maps For Shorter People

OHM // 2

Rapidfire // 2 // 3

Sucker Punch // 2 (please make it a trilogy Rook)

Zone 300

Bonus:

Maps By My 6 Year Old Son

I would think that any of the map sets by Eduardo&friends fit the bill. They are mostly short 5 or 6 map affairs with punchy action that is over in 10 minutes or so.
