We are presented with ten new WAD files to devour, in our weekly scoop of the newest things found in Newstuff.
The Anomaly: Part II by Varun Abhirama Krishna - One single map, for Ultimate DOOM, running on E4M6. Well, if you can trust text files, this should rank right near the top in the category of first-try maps. This map has a wood and green stone theme, much like most of Episode 4 of DOOM. It has tough battles, crushing ceilings, and a big boss to fight at the end of the map. Indeed, it looks like something right out of Thy Flesh Consumed. There is also a very appropriate music replacement. ToRx by Rome - One single deathmatch map for Doom 2. It is much like your typical flashy deathmatch map. Outdoors, brown stones, some detail, switches, teleporters, weapons placed in their own special areas. Not very large. Yes, it's your typical deathmatch map. Gloom Texture Set by Rick Clark - This is interesting. A texture pack which seems to fit its name. A lot of gloomy textures. A lot of green and brown. Many of these textures seem to be "new and improved" from DOOM and Doom 2 versions. A lot of UAC logos. Overall, these textures could be useful. Evil's Playground by Pablo Dictter - Two maps for Ultimate DOOM, running on E3M1-M2. These maps are of quality, sporting somewhat of a Gothic theme. Green stone and red glowing rocks, and a little on the dark side. The maps are a bit on the difficult size, mostly because of the ammo supply, but also because of the situations where you find yourself surrounded. Still, two quality playable maps. The Unknown by Pablo Dictter - One deathmatch level for Heretic this time, running on E1M1. It's rather small, with only a couple of weapons, in one area. A few bonus items are thrown in, but the map itself is pretty much two-dimensional. The decor of the map is good, however. The Chemical Base by Pablo Dictter - One map for Doom 2, and a pretty one at that. This map finds a way to look great without employing excessive detail. It has a sewer theme, with lots of green bricks, and storage crates. The playability is a different matter, however. Surviving can be quite a challenge, simply because of the lack of weapons and ammo, not to mention the health scarcity. Still, a pretty nice map overall. Heart Of Fire by Pablo Dictter - The quality continues this week! One map for Heretic this time, a single-player map, running on E1M1. This map is quite large, and challenging as well. There is just enough ammunition to get by, and keeping your life meter at a comfortable rate is probably the most difficult thing to do. There is lots of detail in this lava-cave style map, and the music replacement seems quite appropriate. Enhanced Heretic port required. An Infernal Place by Pablo Dictter - One map for Doom 2, this one somewhat smaller than the maps released previously this week. It has a grey metal and brick computer-base theme to it, with some crates thrown in for good luck. Monsters from small to medium-large size. Ammo supply seems a little tight, though. It could be a challenge to make your way through without the IDFA cheat code. Still, some nice detail, a good-looking map, and some sounds and music borrowed from Hexen. Warehouse DM by Pablo Dictter - One deathmatch map for Doom 2 this time, primarily designed for two players. It has hallways full of crates, weapons placed in their own special areas, and a couple of secrets thrown in as well. It's not a very large map at all, but it has some nice detail in it. It has a decent music replacement as well. Warehouse by Pablo Dictter - A single-player level for Ultimate DOOM this time. This map is definitely for the light-hearted players. Less monsters and less ammo, a refreshing change for many. Fight demons with your fists, dodge around pillars as you battle the Baron with your shotgun, a map that keeps you fighting but doesn't overwhelm you. It's not all that large of a map. As usual though, it has a nice atmosphere with good detail.

Another week coming to a close, brings us twelve new ZIP files, to satisfy your DOOM-related tastes, in our weekly presentation of the new things found in Newstuff.
Doom: River Of Lost Souls by Various Authors - Six levels for Doom 2, all of them small to small-medium size. Not much detail at all. A bunch of textures thrown together, with lots of misalignments. The maps are easy, and it should be little trouble getting through all six in skill 4. The best way to describe the maps would be very much similar to the higher-quality SLIGE-generated maps. And that's pretty much it. Doomed For The Last Time by Cory Whittle - One map for Doom 2, and a rather large one at that. Inspired by a Duke Nukem 3D level, this map takes on a metallic UAC-base style. The gameplay starts out seeming like easy picking at first, but takes a nasty turn if you aren't careful. It has its misalignments and the occasional overly-simple room, but this map does have some quality. Some graphics from Duke Nukem 3D are used. Nova by Harry - Another single map for Doom 2. This one is medium sized, and it brings with it a relatively tough fight. With monsters of small to medium shapes, it can be tough to get by, especially with the ammo provided. This map has its dark and light areas, lots of sprite decorations, and it's not all that spectacular in terms of detail and fanciness. However, it comes with a music replacement which while it may not exactly seem appropriate to the atmosphere, it's still a melodic tune. Requires ZDoom. Two Fort Capture The Flag by Sgt Crispy - One deathmatch map for Doom 2. Not just your ordinary deathmatch map, however. This is a very interesting Capture The Flag map. There are two bases, the red and the blue. Each base with its own distinctive atmosphere. You can take a run through in single-player to see what it's like, or engage in the real thing using its special port. Requires DoomBot. Evil Capture The Flag by Sgt Crispy - This ZIP file actually contains two new maps in two separate WAD files. Both maps again have two bases, the red and the blue. evlctf.wad has a consistent grey brick theme, while qdctf.wad is a much fancier map, although smaller, it has some new textures and lots of curves and details. qdctf.wad also has a music replacement by Marc Pullen. Overall, some nice work. Requires DoomBot. Gunner DeathMatch 1, 2, 3 by Sgt Crispy (text) (text) - Three deathmatch maps for Doom 2. One in each WAD, running on Map01 to Map03 in the respective files. The first one is a dark, metallic base with many rooms, passageways, and sections. Number two is is an outdoor base, with a dark metal theme, and a "moat" of sorts around the center of the map. The third is probably the best of the bunch, with dark areas and bright areas, high and low areas, great detail and well-placed weapons. Each music replacement seems better than the last. Enhanced DOOM port recommended. Jail DeathMatch 1 by Sgt Crispy - Another deathmatch map for Doom 2. This one takes place in a jail-like facility, most likely a jail. It has the design of your typical deathmatch level. Weapons placed in various places. Lots of rooms. And it's pretty clean and well-done. Enhanced DOOM port recommended. Whirlwind Struggle by MazuQ - Yet another single deathmatch map for Doom 2, and this one is perhaps the most interesting of the bunch. This level has perhaps the most widely-implemented use of slopes we've seen in a map before. Lots and lots of great detail, coupled with some new textures, make a fine-looking deathmatch map. No single-player starts, however. You'll have to wander around in -deathmatch mode. Requires ZDoom. 2001 A Deathmatch Odyssey by Paul Corfiatis - This week's deathmatch saga continues, this time with an 8-level WAD for Ultimate DOOM. Out of all the deathmatch goodies presented to us so far this week, this one is probably all-around the best of the bunch. Eight unique, entertaining maps with a refreshing variety to every one of them. From castles in the sky to dark blood and brimstone deep below, these are eight satisfying maps. They come with eight relatively good music replacements as well.

    The /newstuff Chronicles #33

    By AndrewB, in News,

Seven new DOOMish goodies which have been released over the past week are brought together in the 33rd edition of our weekly presentation of the new things found in Newstuff.
Selfish Series 1 by Paul Corfiatis - Three levels for Doom 2. Each of them previously released, now merged into this WAD with three new music replacements. If you choose to start out on Ultra-Violence skill without cheating, then you will find yourself out of ammo soon, as these levels are much more challenging than one can reasonably expect a level to be. Still, these maps show off some true non-linear design, good detail and light work, with some clean, colorful areas. Music best listened to on cheaper synthesizers. Vrack 2 by Fredrik Johansson - Architecturally, this map is a masterpiece. Some superhuman breathtaking detail, spread out over this monster of a level. Taking place on some space storage base, this level throws enough monsters and lifedefs at you to make your computer squeal and beg for mercy. If the number of monsters in the various areas weren't so bounteous, this could have been a thoroughly enjoyable level. Still, an exquisite masterpiece, and a commonly-used musical replacement. Enhanced DOOM port required. Pik by Cosmic Wraith - Seven levels for Doom 2, all sporting the same theme; amateur. A slew of textures used mostly randomly. Nearly no changes in light levels at all. Medium-sized monsters used right from the very start. Square rooms, 90° lines throughout. Not to say that it isn't a good effort, but it probably wouldn't hold anyone's attention very long. Temple Of Blood by John Wantland - One map for Doom 2. The documentation claims that this map is really, really bad. Although, it's not as horrible as you would think. Textures are used in at least somewhat of a theme. Lighting is used reasonably well. There is some decent architecture thrown in. Yes, the map is mostly square. And yes, it has mazes. And yes, there are hoards of monsters; so much so that making it through without cheating is probably impossible. But overall, we've seen much worse. The Killhouse by Ilkka Kunttu - A single map for Doom 2, this level shows qualities that many other maps seem to have lost lately. Taking place in a cramped metal-wooden house, this mostly-square level will have you retracing your steps many times, so you may find yourself becoming more and more familiar with the areas. This is contrary to the modern map which can be really huge, with lots of detail, but you can't appreciate it because it goes by you in a flash. Also, a challenging map, where it's really best to conserve your ammo. Slarty by Andrew Mckie - Eight deathmatch levels for Doom 2, along with some replaced graphics and sounds from various sources. At first glance, you'll know that these maps are intended for Deathmatch, seeing that most of them mirror themselves in all four directions. Most of them are monster-free, although some of them have their inhabitants. As for the map design, some interesting variety in these levels. They all have the same SCI-FI feel, and some of them have some pretty good detail. The Axix by Vedert - Here we have one map for Doom 2, another gigantic wonder! Like most huge levels, this one has more than its share of monsters, which are quite disproportionate to the weapons and ammunition provided. The map starts off with smaller monsters, then eventually works its way up to mid-to-large size monsters. As for the theme of the map itself, it's a UAC base map with your usual storyline. Enhanced DOOM port required.

    The /newstuff Chronicles #29

    By AndrewB, in News,

Nine new WAD files are brought to us, in our weekly presentation of the new DOOM-related things uploaded to CDROM.COM.
Legions Of Hell by John Gaughan - Seven well-designed maps for Doom 2. These aren't incredible in detail. However, they do provide a constant trickle of monsters, and the gameplay of constantly peeking around corners without having to feel overwhelmed. They get progressively more difficult, with the completion of the final level leaving you feeling satisfied. These levels are each somewhat short, usually taking only a few minutes to finish, and the theme is a balanced mix of indoor and outdoor. Bleed For Life by Cast Draling - One map for Doom 2! This one has some incredible detail! Amazing light work. Architecture which is right up with the premium. The monster fight can be a challenge, though! Barons and Revenants in tight corners. Ammo supplies dwindling. And when you get out in the open, lots and lots of monsters! It can be overwhelming, but not impossible. The eye-candy is the big thing with this WAD. Enhanced DOOM port recommended. Cult Pit by Templar - Another single map for Doom 2. This one taking on more of an outdoor theme, however. Not too much detail. A few really big monsters, and not really enough ammunition to dispatch all of them. Seems to be best played using cheat codes, although I wouldn't recommend developing such a habit. Flay The Obscene - The Third by Christian Hansen - One map for Doom 2, running on Map15. This isn't your ordinary map! This map has great detail. An amazing variety of light levels, height levels, and color. An intriguing level, with a complicated path to the finish line. Very difficult, however. Monsters abounding from every direction. Tough monsters right from the start. A price is to be paid for such great artistics. Enhanced DOOM port required. Fort Plasma by Jerry Neighbors - Another single map for Doom 2, this one a deathmatch level! Mostly square, with a simple castle in the middle. Some towers, a very shallow moat, and a very large playing area. Trust by Tommie Quick - An amazing ambient WAD for Doom 2! If you like DOOM, and you like Half-Life, this is definitely for you. The WAD plays out very much like Half-Life. Talk to the guards, gain access to areas. No fighting at first, then, a little bit of combat, as it slowly heats up. Ammo balance is absolutely amazing! You will find yourself scrounging for ammunition, wondering how you're going to survive, thinking "Boy, I'd really love a chainsaw right about now." Lots of ambient sounds. Beautiful outdoor areas. Lots of variety in the atmosphere. Some new sounds and graphics from Half-Life, and Duke Nukem 3D. And of course, lots of DOOM content as well. One of the most enjoyable WADs put out in a long time. It's hard to put it down! Requires ZDoom. Corridor 7 TC Resource Files by Cacodemon Leader - A little more downbeat this time. Just a WAD with some graphics, sounds, and one music replacement. Most of the graphics are sprite renders of Caleb from the PC title "Blood". A few macho-tough-guy voice sounds, and a title replacement graphic. It is a resource WAD, after all. Update: Evidently, there are no graphics from Blood. However, there are new graphics. Doom The Dark Project by Nigel Rowand - One very moody and entertaining map for Doom 2. You start out in the dark, empty streets. Nothing around but a few monsters. You make your way into the dank dark, green sewers, and then so it goes from there. This map has quite a bit of nice detail. Some new sounds, a bunch of new graphics, and a quiet music replacement which seems very fitting. Yet another entertaining title. Requires ZDoom. Enjay Blake Stone Skins by Nigel Rowand - A much more simple way to finish off our week. Five skins for DOOM or Doom 2, all of them from the classic Wolfenstein 3D clone, Blake Stone. Enhanced DOOM port required.

    The /newstuff Chronicles #26

    By AndrewB, in News,

Six new WAD's have been presented to us, all brought together in our neat little weekly package, containing short descriptions of the new DOOMish things uploaded to CDROM.COM.
The Prison by Stephen Nicholas - A three-level hub for Doom 2. The level design is mostly simple, with very little detail. Some areas are copied right out of DOOM and Doom 2 maps. There are many puzzles in this WAD, most of them utterly confusing, and difficult to figure out. Requires ZDoom. Reol Tough: Death Fest 2000 by George Fiffy - Four levels for Doom 2! The map design in this WAD seems pretty good. Good detail. It's very clean, and it looks nice overall. Each map has its own atmosphere, so it doesn't feel redundant. The first map is doable, but the levels become increasingly difficult afterward. Overall, four nice levels. Ash To Ash by Virgil - This is an incredibly amazing level for Doom 2. Not only does it have great detail, fine architecture, and plenty of eye candy... This thing is huge! There are plenty of monsters, and at times the challenge can seem a bit overwhelming. But if anyone can actually bear to complete this level, start to finish, I will be amazed. Requires BOOM. Duke Nukem by Ruddy Palacios - A very simple WAD for Doom 2. The graphics for the DOOM Space Marine are replaced with Duke Nukem. Mainly for multiplayer usage. Enhanced DOOM port required. Gnosis by Ruddy Palacios - Here's a refreshing change for many DOOMers out there! One map for Hexen. This level uses many of the original Hexen scripts and effects. Map design is well done. Texture placement is good. This map has most of, if not all of the ingredients of an enjoyable, classic-styled map. It is a challenging map, however. Expect some fights and some puzzles. Ice Station Alpha by Various Authors - A single map for Doom 2, running on Map02. Don't give your hopes up on playing this map, since a missing floor texture will be a major hamper on your journey of playing this map without a port. If you do manage to overlook this error, this map is quite a challenge. A well-lit space base, with tons and tons of monsters. This map is mostly 90°, and not much in the way of detail. And of course, because of the missing texture, we all know the reason for this line; Enhanced DOOM port required.

    The /newstuff Chronicles #24

    By AndrewB, in News,

We have been gifted with three new DOOM-related packages, all wrapped up and presented to you in our weekly gazette listing all the new things in Newstuff.
Kye by Kye Rolins - A single map for Doom 2. As it is, this is a first-attempt level for this author, using the help of a relative. Yes, this map is pretty much flat. No change in light levels. Somewhat random texture placement. Still, the playability is decent. Lots and lots of little pellet-shooting monsters to mow down. And just enough ammunition to finish off the big boss which comes about 2/3 of the way through the map. It's good for a first try! RTC_Marine's Sounds Volume I by Russell Rice - Some sounds and music for DOOM or Doom 2. A few new sounds, all replacing those of weapons. Two new music files, for Map01 and Map02, with no real substance to them. That's about it. Continuous Wave by Raphael Cheney - One of the most interesting and unique maps we've seen in a long time! This one a single map for Ultimate DOOM, E1M1. Winding and wandering your way through this puzzling, Morse-Code marked map, for what seems like an eternity, you can battle your way through the many monsters, or choose to play with no monsters at all, by picking skill level 1 or 2. A few puzzles, a real workout for your brain!

    The /newstuff Chronicles #19

    By AndrewB, in News,

First of all, I would like to point out a slight change in the mechanics of our Newstuff linking system. The names of the authors, which used to link to their Email addresses, now redirects to the respective text file. Like this new setup? Hate it? Feel free to leave your opinion in the Newstuff Comment Thread. Without further delay, we bring you fourteen new WAD files, in our weekly presentation of the new DOOM-related things found on CDROM.COM.
Trident by Bjorn Hermans - Just a single map for Doom 2. Not much detail, and rather short, with monsters somewhat randomly placed. The map is at least made in the shape of a trident, so no deception there. There's also a music replacement, which isn't very melodic, and gets annoying after extended exposure. Evil Hyrbrid by Cast Draling - A stone-and-grass, outdoor-theme level for Doom 2, with music from DOOM's E2M2 being the replacement. Inspired by the world-famous 10 Sectors WAD, this map does indeed use sector merging techniques, with a 75 sector count. The level design is very professional, clean-cut, and nice-looking. It is challenging, however. Prepare for a fight! Realm Of Hell by John Cartwright - This seems to be a very professionally-designed Doom 2 level. Colorful, clean, and attractive. There seems to be very little ammo and weapons to speak of, though. Most of time is spent running. To play this map, you'll have to use Gothic Textures. Requires BOOM. Unruly Evil by John Cartwright - Another challenging level for Doom 2, this time on Map07. Ammo supplies are a bit more plentiful this time, but they still seem to be a little low. The map is colorful again, with lots of lava, green stone, and wood. I just can't figure out why the size of this ZIP is over 1MB. Requires BOOM. Deathmatch Arena by Mr. Rocket - This seems to be somewhat of a Map07-style deathmatch map for Doom 2. A cyberdemon in the middle of the map, ammunition scattered about, and a few new sounds, a music replacement, and some Ultimate DOOM textures. It's a decent WAD. Highlnds by Chris Wright - One of the most rare kinds of maps we ever get to see; a level built for cooperative play! This is indeed a very large level. Detail is missing, and most of the map does seem somewhat square, but that shouldn't take too much away from the fun of a cooperative game. Oh yes, and the level runs on Map07. Von Helsing's Mansion by Kevin Roels - For a mansion-themed level, this one feels a little stale. The mansion remains well-lighted throughout, taking away any possible spookiness. The Map01 music remains, which degreades the effect even further. The details of the occasional replaced sprites are nice, but don't seem to add much. Weapons 4-7 have been replaced as well. It all boils down to about a 300KB download. Enhanced DOOM port required. The Marble Maze by Kevin Roels - The title of this map is very accurate! A maze-type level for Doom 2, mostly done with marble textures. It seems quite easy at first, but it gets challenging soon enough. There's also a pretty good music replacement to keep you going. I'm sure I've heard it before, though. You can also download the Ultimate DOOM Version. Quad Wads by Kevin Roels - A deathmatch map for Doom 2. Somewhat large, mostly square, but quite interesting and diverse. Combining bright outdoor areas with dark, shadowy indoor areas. Teleporters are placed throughout. Lots of room for ambush. The more players, the better. You can also download the Ultimate DOOM Version, and the Heretic Version. Gladiator by Larsboy - The name is fitting, and we all know what the strategy of the map is! Monsters infight! You are placed in a large green-stone arena, on Doom 2 Map29, and you decide which monsters you want to bring out. Run like crazy, try to survive, and see how far you can get! This map seems like it would be exceptionally fitting for cooperative or deathmatch play! Enhanced DOOM port required. Mountain Deathmatch 4 by Ed Cripps - A shiny-looking Quake-like deathmatch map for Doom 2. Lots of nice detail put into this map. Curves in the walls, stairs and ledges with brown trim... Mostly stone, brick, and blood is the theme of the map. Everything seems clean and well organized. Very nice! Requires ZDoom.

    The /newstuff Chronicles #17

    By AndrewB, in News,

Eight new WAD files, in our weekly presentation of the new things found on CDROM.COM.
Vrack by Fredrik Johansson - Ahh, this is quite nice. A single map for Doom 2, located on a base, somewhere out in space. The design of this map is very professional. Lots of detail, lots of well-done texture variety. The level engineering is quite advanced as well, with doors requiring two switches to open, and things of the like. And if you're sick of the plain old Map01 music, no worry! There is a music replacement, which I think is quite fitting. Enhanced DOOM port required. Corp by Kim Vidal - What have we here? This appears to be a single deathmatch map, for Doom 2. The level itself is quite small. It does have a few strange new textures, though. A new sky, a new flat. And some bar codes, which seem to absorb some missile attacks. I think there are deathmatch levels out there, which are more enjoyable than this. Missil by Kim Vidal - Yet another deathmatch map for Doom 2. Some more neat new textures, mostly in grayscale. The concept and design of this map is really rather unique. Cracks and crevasses in the ground. Platforms, safe spots. It could make for a very interesting deathmatch! Station Alpha Omega by Giac Veltri - I think some of you guys should enjoy this. A single-player map, for Doom 2. Stationed somewhere on a space base, you need to *yawn*, destroy everything, and find your goal. The map design is fairly good, and the level is large. A few new well-placed textures as well. Enhanced DOOM port recommended. Atlantis by Striker - Here is a very unique deathmatch level for Doom 2. A very small, fog-filled, underwater level! The different weapons are scattered evenly, with the BFG appropriately being the most difficult to obtain. There's even a soothing new music track to accompany it! Very much worth the small download. Requires ZDoom. Gallows 2 by Anthony Soto - This should be enjoyable! Two new maps for Doom 2. Map01, and Map07. Both maps are similar in design, although the bonus level (Map07), has some really difficult challenges. Lots of color, and lots of interesting design in both of these maps. The music replacement on the first level should keep you entertained as well! Room 101 by Sock - Those of you looking for something along the lines of classic DOOM feel, you needn't look much further! This map plays on Ultimate DOOM's E1M1, but tends to feel more along the lines of E2M6-M7. Ammo balance is very good most of the way through, and yes, this map does look like it came from the lost levels of DOOM. Enjoy! Tenchi Muyo Doom by Curtis Smith - A very, very strange WAD, which seems to be almost a random jumble of sprites, textures, sounds, music, and levels. The music has its qualities. The levels are nothing to brag about. The sounds can be amusing, and the graphics seem to be randomly painted, and pulled from screen savers. Enhanced DOOM port recommended.
