baja blast rd. Posted July 27, 2021 This year has a ridiculous amount of Doom releases, as people have noticed for a while. So it's as good a year as any to do a minimalist recap -- or, an Annual Recap Summary Event -- of every notable or substantial release, with a preliminary estimate being several dozen total (it might be 100+). Inclusion guidelines: Spoiler - This summary is meant to be very inclusive (which you'd notice when I start adding wads myself), so don't hesitate to suggest some obscure releases. Avoid Terry wads and similar. - We will probably be able to include a high proportion of megawads, unless it's authored by someone named O'Blige or stuff like "I spent 5 minutes in DB drawing boxes" -- simply because there won't be hundreds of total megawads. But I'll have to start drawing progressively more lines as releases get smaller, because when you start to include things like standalone speedmaps, the list gets very unwieldly. - MP wads? Yes. - Relevant dates: November 15, 2020 to [present day]. - Why that span? It is technically meant to be "2021," but I'm also throwing in last year's award cycle grace period since people commonly understand those as "2021 releases." Would suggest not worrying if that feels arbitrary -- because if a proper 2020 list is ever done, simply cut-pasting entries from one list to another is super easy. - The wad should be released in at least a beta form -- hold off on WIPs that have maps to come. If anything is unclear, you can ask. As [present day] indicates, I would recommend against taking a time machine to grab future releases, even if they are still in 2021. - There will be no further "recommendations" beyond inclusion. This is meant to be an egalitarian list. Other parts of old OP: Spoiler Edit: we are covering both mapping (read the OP for guidelines) and other types of projects, such as music, assets, and coding (read this post for guidelines). It will be a big, organized list formatted as such (with metatags to come later): FLORCEIL by Unknown Doom 2, vanilla, 1 map FLORCEIL by Unknown Doom 2, vanilla, 1 map ... The primary goal of the list will be to make it convenient to find wads that exist. Basic info guidelines: Spoiler - [Wad Title] by author(s) - IWAD, Format, Maps. Examples: "Doom 2, GZDoom, 1 map" or "Adventures of Square, GZDoom (4.5.0 or later), 2140 maps" - For community projects, the author field is generally "[project leader here] et al." - The map count shouldn't include pure credits/outro maps or things like skip maps. For example last year's Mutabor is a single-map release, despite having a "thanks for playing" map and a bonus map. But the map count would include things like monsterless hub maps in the flow of progression. - Formats are stuff like: vanilla, limit-removing, Boom-compatible, Eternity, ZDoom, GZDoom. Specific ports, like Doomsday, CDoom, and Steve Boom, might not necessarily be formats. If you are unsure about this (or any other info), you can ask. Screenshot guidelines: Spoiler - 3-6 screenshots in 4:3 aspect ratio (3 shots for single maps or very short mapsets, 6 shots for hefty megawads ... play it by ear, I won't be too fussy about this) - use a zoomed-out HUD, without a status bar (either no HUD visible at all or the most minimal HUD), unless the wad specifically has a baked-in hud. using monsters or not doesn't matter. - if you are taking screenshots from a mapset or megawad, try to space them out appropriately (for example with Heartland, don't take every single shot of one map). - so that people can understand what the wad looks like as a baseline: try to use reasonably default settings (or author-recommended ones if that applies -- particularly with lighting). - on the above, for example: ideally take shots of vanilla wads in an oldschool port's software mode. with GZDoom wads, ideally use no extra visual flair mods or crosshair (if the wad's settings don't default to one) and don't add things like ambient occlusion. try not to use gl lighting modes that are too unusual, for example "bright" with most things. - if you want to take a ton of screenshots for RAMP, I probably will say yes lol - I'll have to turn away screenshots for things like "is staring at the floor" or "the screen is entirely red because the player just got hit by two cyber rockets," but also if something is deeply wrong with the shot (glitching sky due to improper settings, missing textures due to wrong iwad, etc.) - preferably have played the wad, so you have some sort of idea what areas might work for screenshots already. - try not to be too spoilery with Easter eggs or the like; if you're not sure, use the author's own shots as a guideline for what they would want the player to know of beforehand. Other info: Series with numerous releases like ASS and PUSS will likely have one combined entry with appropriate links to all entries in the series, rather than multiple individual entries. To make up for that, they can have more screenshots (10, 15, or 20) if someone really wants to do that. How to contribute: 1) For now, read the above guidelines and post things like this... Spoiler FLOORCEIL by Unknown Doom 2, vanilla, 1 maphttps://imgur.com/a/vQUcvU9 ...or contribute screenshots that follow the screenshot guidelines for a wad that doesn't have any listed. 2) Please don't be in a rush to do everything, or even a lot. The "deadline," if you think of this as having one, is January 1, 2022. Adding an entry and shots for a single wad is enough to have contributed something helpful. 3) A set of screenshots (in 4:3) is the most helpful thing at this point. 46 Share this post Link to post
baja blast rd. Posted July 27, 2021 (The finished summary will likely be split into many posts so that it's possible to link to specific sections through the table of contents.) Current Table of Contents: - Doom 2 -- Conversions (Total, or Partial with very significant changes) -- Community Projects and Special Events -- Wad Series -- Speedmapping -- Niche Slaughter and Challenge -- Megawads (General) -- Mapsets (General) -- Single Maps (General) -- Multiplayer - Ultimate Doom - TNT and Plutonia - Heretic and Hexen - Standalone and Other Current: 109 completed entries | 117 total entries Estimated End: 160.2 on December 31, 2021 (source: number pulled out of my butt) Tips for using this: To make things easier to find, wad format within specific categories goes from most basic (vanilla) to most advanced (GZDoom). The number of screenshots is loosely proportional to map count and isn't meant to mean anything else. If a wad requires a recent version of a port and the author indicated that, I'll try to note that for convenience (like "GZDoom (4.6.1 and up)"). But the lack of that note (like just "GZDoom") doesn't mean any ancient version of the port works. This is not fully comprehensive. To keep it practical, the summary is light on smaller single-map releases and standalone speedmaps. It doesn't include unfinished wads. [Currently, the summary is also a WIP.] Still look around the forums and idgames archives for more to play. Thank you to everyone who helped me put these together. Omniarch Posted July 27, 2021 Dur hur, butts ;) Regardless, this is a fantastic idea for a thread! A great resource for all those in search of Doom-y goodness, or simply a way to wrap their heads around this year's bountiful content. I do have a question, though: should I (or any other prospective participant) hold off on submitting anything until your main list has been transcribed? I can't help but imagine there would be a significant degree of overlap between your list, my list, and / or the list of anyone who has been paying attention to the year's major releases. 3 Share this post Link to post

That would be really unwanted actually. Overlap or redundancy is not annoying for me, because all that matters is wads and shots are posted, which I can then use to gradually piece together the bigger list. Also you don't have to post "lists," as in lots of different things. You can just post a single wad with a single set of screenshots, or a single set of screenshots for a wad that I haven't added screenshots for, or even a single wad with basic info lol. Trying to avoid having high effort barriers to contribution here. 2 Share this post Link to post

Final Verdict Posted July 28, 2021 This is a great idea RD and will also serve as a handy reference for me. I haven't got around to playing many Wads this year as I've been getting side-tracked a lot by life. This thread will definitely help me catch up once I have more free time, although I did manage to get through Heartland and URE 2020. Aside from a replay of Requiem that's about all I have managed for 2021 so far. My backlog of maps/wads is getting ridiculous. There's never enough time. 5 Share this post Link to post

Decay Posted July 29, 2021 I'd just like to point out that bourgeois megawad should be cross listed in the multiplayer section as well since technically DM was its primary purpose 1 Share this post Link to post

I'd prefer not to put anything in more than one place. Update: On 7/27/2021 at 11:35 AM, rd. said: Current: 18 completed entries | 68 partial entries Estimated End: 120 on December 31, 2021 (source: number pulled out of my butt) I took and added 6 screenshot sets yesterday (which is sneakily exhausting). On pace to get caught up within a couple months, and then start adding things as they come out. Since this is going very smoothly, though, and listing itself doesn't take much energy, I created another post for summarizing other types of releases, like music, and added a very incomplete set of examples to get started. As usual, I'll add or split categories as needed; suggestions for that aren't necessary. (If we summarize gameplay mods too, it will likely be on ZDoom Forums.) Guidelines: 1) For now, MIDIs packs and texture packs should preferably be packs, not one track or texture. (I'll make sensible exceptions, such as if this were released.) A sprite set should be at least a single monster or weapon, or a collection of many static props (again I'll make sensible exceptions). 2) The music listings can include collections of original music by community members (for example, forum threads), and OSTs designed for specific wads, if the composers are okay with other people using it. Textures and sprites that are a part of map projects need to have been released separately, though. 3) Include a very brief and somewhat neutral description of each thing you linked to, since I will generally use one on the list (no screenshots here...how do you even do that for music). 4) Ports can include very big updates, not just new ports. 5) Nov 15, 2020 to the end of 2021, for the same reasons as with mapping (see inclusion guidelines in the OP). Although with certain categories (like source ports) you can relax this. 4 Share this post Link to post

GarrettChan Posted July 29, 2021 Don't know whether putting screenshots into spoiler tags are better. I kind of understand screenshots are supposed to be attention grabbing, but right now the list will definitely be very long, and it's going to be kind of difficult to find what you see here. With the titles among a large chunk of pictures, it's also pretty easy to miss what we're actually looking at. Also, maybe sort in alphabetical order? But that's a lot of work, up to you, of course. 0 Share this post Link to post

The list is a WIP, so I'm going to avoid formatting it in a way that makes it unnecessarily difficult to work with, which spoiler tags do. Same goes for any sort of mass recategorization. (The best compression is categories behind spoilers, or breaking into multiple posts, which lets a table of contents quickly link to subsections instead of requiring scrolling through the whole thing. Placing screenshot sets in individual spoilers forces an awkward amount of clicking.) Alphabetical order doesn't do anything helpful, especially for someone unfamiliar with much of the list. [Edit: Also, I will be prioritizing people who aren't already very familiar with the year's releases.] 0 Share this post Link to post
