Dur hur, butts ;)

Regardless, this is a fantastic idea for a thread! A great resource for all those in search of Doom-y goodness, or simply a way to wrap their heads around this year's bountiful content.

I do have a question, though: should I (or any other prospective participant) hold off on submitting anything until your main list has been transcribed? I can't help but imagine there would be a significant degree of overlap between your list, my list, and / or the list of anyone who has been paying attention to the year's major releases.

That would be really unwanted actually. Overlap or redundancy is not annoying for me, because all that matters is wads and shots are posted, which I can then use to gradually piece together the bigger list.

Also you don't have to post "lists," as in lots of different things. You can just post a single wad with a single set of screenshots, or a single set of screenshots for a wad that I haven't added screenshots for, or even a single wad with basic info lol. Trying to avoid having high effort barriers to contribution here.

Yeah don't hesitate to add "obvious" things because for my own preliminary additions, I'm not gradually sweeping from obvious things to less obvious ones.

Is this a list of the WADs that they were realised in 2021?

good question, or is it a list of things that will be released in 2021 or? (for the record, I do not think GZFreeDOOM is going to release in 2021)

That is fine too, as is a link to an album or individual links. To resize stuff, when you post an image in the WYSIWYG editor, you can double-click it and then adjust the size.

a thing about the last one, the text file says "Heavily modified versions of Oblige generated maps", but I honestly don't know much about how oblige creates stuff or if the stuff can be credible as made by a human (without modifications, that is), but the maps seemed legit solid work for me that I'd never guess they were originally "auto-generated". Anyways, if it doesn't meet the rules, I can remove it

This is a great idea RD and will also serve as a handy reference for me.

I haven't got around to playing many Wads this year as I've been getting side-tracked a lot by life. This thread will definitely help me catch up once I have more free time, although I did manage to get through Heartland and URE 2020. Aside from a replay of Requiem that's about all I have managed for 2021 so far.

My backlog of maps/wads is getting ridiculous. There's never enough time.

I'd just like to point out that bourgeois megawad should be cross listed in the multiplayer section as well since technically DM was its primary purpose

Moved it there with a note. I'd prefer not to put anything in more than one place.

Update:

On 7/27/2021 at 11:35 AM, rd. said:

Current: 18 completed entries | 68 partial entries

Estimated End: 120 on December 31, 2021 (source: number pulled out of my butt)

I took and added 6 screenshot sets yesterday (which is sneakily exhausting). On pace to get caught up within a couple months, and then start adding things as they come out.

Since this is going very smoothly, though, and listing itself doesn't take much energy, I created another post for summarizing other types of releases, like music, and added a very incomplete set of examples to get started. As usual, I'll add or split categories as needed; suggestions for that aren't necessary. (If we summarize gameplay mods too, it will likely be on ZDoom Forums.)

Guidelines:

1) For now, MIDIs packs and texture packs should preferably be packs, not one track or texture. (I'll make sensible exceptions, such as if this were released.) A sprite set should be at least a single monster or weapon, or a collection of many static props (again I'll make sensible exceptions).

2) The music listings can include collections of original music by community members (for example, forum threads), and OSTs designed for specific wads, if the composers are okay with other people using it. Textures and sprites that are a part of map projects need to have been released separately, though.

3) Include a very brief and somewhat neutral description of each thing you linked to, since I will generally use one on the list (no screenshots here...how do you even do that for music).

4) Ports can include very big updates, not just new ports.

5) Nov 15, 2020 to the end of 2021, for the same reasons as with mapping (see inclusion guidelines in the OP). Although with certain categories (like source ports) you can relax this.

Don't know whether putting screenshots into spoiler tags are better.

I kind of understand screenshots are supposed to be attention grabbing, but right now the list will definitely be very long, and it's going to be kind of difficult to find what you see here. With the titles among a large chunk of pictures, it's also pretty easy to miss what we're actually looking at.

Also, maybe sort in alphabetical order? But that's a lot of work, up to you, of course.

The list is a WIP, so I'm going to avoid formatting it in a way that makes it unnecessarily difficult to work with, which spoiler tags do. Same goes for any sort of mass recategorization. (The best compression is categories behind spoilers, or breaking into multiple posts, which lets a table of contents quickly link to subsections instead of requiring scrolling through the whole thing. Placing screenshot sets in individual spoilers forces an awkward amount of clicking.)

Alphabetical order doesn't do anything helpful, especially for someone unfamiliar with much of the list.

[Edit: Also, I will be prioritizing people who aren't already very familiar with the year's releases.]

It's not only someone unfamiliar with the list is going to read the list, but whatever.
